CIA paramilitary officer Johnny "Mike" Spann calmly but urgently walked into a small law office in Old Town Manassas to sign his last will and testament in the hours before he was deployed to Afghanistan last month. He was businesslike, friendly and trading smiles with his new wife and infant son.

Although he knew he was about to leave the country, he didn't appear frightened or concerned, said Elizabeth Munro von Keller, a Manassas lawyer who prepared his will on Oct. 5. Spann, instead, was very matter-of-fact.

Watching his father last night was heart breaking. He was so very proud of his son, but just so very hurt by his death.

He looked at the reporters and told them he'd begged them not to reveal his son's name before anyone knew his status, but they did it anyway. Now he'll never know if his son was alive and once the media revealed his name, THEN he was shot, or if he was already dead. No one - not a single reporter - indicated they understood what he was saying. They just kept shoving their mics in his face.

He was pitiful trying to be so brave and strong for his grandchildren.
