This was up on the WP site last night, I assumed someone else was going to post the link so I didn't bother...didn't expect it to take this long, however, considering it's fairly big anthrax news :-)

Problem is, if correct it means this strain wasn't sent overseas to a zillion labs, to Iraq, etc. making the favored FR hypothesis that the anthrax attackers are middle eastern terrorists a TAD less likely (but certainly not impossible.)

One important thing to note is that they aren't 100% sure yet this Ames strain is completely and totally identical to the USAMRIID strain.

1 the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, an Albuquerque research institute

2 in May and June with the Battelle Memorial Institute, a Columbus, Ohio, corporation involved in anthrax vaccine research.

3 the Defence Research Establishment Suffield, a Canadian biodefense institute that received Ames in 1998

4 the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, a test facility in the Utah desert that received the bacteria in 1992

5 the Chemical Defence Establishment at Porton Down, a biodefense institute near Salisbury, England, which received the Ames strain in the mid-1980s

Note: Only one tiny speck of anthrax is enough to grow more. Any doctor or researcher at any one of these labs could have given a speck to other researcher friends at other labs. This stuff is as easy to grow as mold on cheese, but generally a high-teck lab needs to be used for the growing, to be sure the researcher and other nearby people are not infected.

Lots of good information there, but you have to watch out for that WarshPost signature spin that seek to "blame America First" every single time.

There was a report (never confirmed to my knowledge) that a vial of hoof & mouth disease went missing at Porton Down sometime before that disease's outbreak in Great Britain.

It remains hard to believe that the UK's livestock epidemic traced to an immigrant's suitcase full of infected meat...

Porton Down. Was there ever anything definite about the claims that vials of hoof&mouth gone missing at Porton Down?

Other than that, if the stuff went to even one civilian/health-type institution, how strict would they be with regards to sharing with other scientists around the world.

And Dugway. If the Ames strain was tested at Dugway, what would be the chances that someone, perhaps not even American, could manage to get a soil sample - if there's any contaminated soil?

According to today's London Times, in a story talking about the breaking of Al-Quaeda's code, it is the consensus of the terrorist groups that England is the easiest country in which to operate. Maybe it's time to start 'profiling' the people in that lab who could have come into contact with the Ames anthrax (AND the hoof-and-mouth).

The bacteria, Bacillus anthracis, cause anthrax. The bacteria are found in two states — the vegetative state and the spore state. The vegetative state is the growing, reproducing form of the bacteria found in infected animals and people. The vegetative form is the state that causes the disease, anthrax. If untreated the disease in animals is generally fatal. After an animal dies from anthrax, if the carcass is opened by a veterinarian during a necropsy, scavengers or by decay, the vegetative state is exposed to oxygen in the air. When the vegetative state is exposed to oxygen in the air, it forms spores. The spores are highly resistant to disinfectants and remain viable for years in the soil. The spores are found naturally in the soil of California and many western states. When the spores enter another animal, usually through grazing contaminated vegetation or inhaling spores, the bacteria revert to the disease causing vegetative form.

In August 2000, an anthrax outbreak in Nevada killed 30 cattle. This outbreak was associated with a recent ditch cleaning, which may have disturbed spores deep in the soil.

Whoa, hold on a minute, I thought it was being reported that ONLY the U.S. and Russia had smallpox?

Ah. Bioweapons research in Britain, where they have a large and live Islamist/Terrorist community, is in the hands of a practicing Islamic. And this facility has Anthrax, ebola and smallpox in addition the the hoof&mouth. And the global hoof&mouth thing started there, and samples seem to have gone missing.

Really, this is a bit too many coincidences.

Better start thinking of the Islamic first (successful) strike as not against the twin towers, but against the west's beef supply.

And I suppose there were some people out there who were thinking the U.S. Army Laboratory had delivered the Ames Strain of Anthrax directly to the anthrax terrorist. The 'Blame Americans First Crowd' is reaching for every straw they can, no matter how short they are. The anthrax terrorist wrote the following 'Allah is Great', 'Death to Israel' and 'Death to Amercia'. Thats the facts jack. Spinning and hypothesizing dont change the simple truth.

So.........the earlier statements in the press about most research anthrax having come from Ames is false?
