John McWhorter: Profiling and Black Victimhood
Los Angeles Times ^ | 12/02/2001 | JOHN H. McWHORTER

OAKLAND -- One out of three young black men are in jail or involved with the criminal-justice system. This factoid has become a staple in the African American community, chanted by rote as a badge of informed "black identity." And it is true.

When I was growing up in the 1970s, my elders could defend a victim-centered perspective based on the stark absence of blacks in higher positions in society. How many black men have you seen running a corporation? How many black people does President X have in powerful Cabinet posts? How many black shows do you see on TV? How many black people do you see playing dignified parts in a white movie?

With 9-11 there is a need for ethnic profiling regarding people who are not Americans.

As far as blacks or other races are concerned they are twisting what profiling is for the police. From what I read it works and is simply going after those that dress up, look and act like criminal types. Those that want to associate themselves with criminals are probably working hard to be one. It is really no great surprise and makes good sense.

I've crossed the street seeing some gangish looking white folks before, so it crosses the color lines and has NOTHING to specifically do with race.

My God here we go again, those blacks are not serving time in prison for jaywalking so get over it already.

I didn't need to read the entire article. The first three paragraphs were enough to identify this guy as a self-perceived victim...also known as a whiner.
Has he never heard the names Powell and Rice? Okay, Powell has been wimpy lately....but Dr. Rice ROCKS!

I had a journalism teacher who wrote for the local newspaper who told us that every journalist understands the principle of the "peg," his version was to republish the same piece on the 4th of July every year verbatim, except for the use of a local ex war hero or veteran in the lead; in other words, boilerplate.

McWhorter is doing this here, his peg is 911 and OBL; same old same old......

You may want to read the entire column.

This John H. McWhorter is the same John H. McWhorter that wrote this column that FReepers loved.

Not so fast. Isn't John McWhorter the author of Losing the Race? In which he points out that he never saw a white or Asian student smile when saying they couldn't "get" coursework--but that that was not rare for black students even when the subject matter was jazz.

Our task is to ensure that African American children grow up without experiences that lead them to see the police as their enemy. Many of us (blacks included) may wish that black people would just "get over" the blame game. And, surely, that game is taken too far too often.

Okay, Pokey, I read the entire article, which was difficult getting through all the pc garbage...and finally in the last paragraph I found something worthy of comment.

When African Americans start thinking of themselves as Americans...most of their self-imposed problems will disappear. And when all criminals, of all colors, stop being criminals, the police will stop being their enemy.

Thanks for the link to the second column. There is a lot in it I can agree with. I do take exception to his underlying premise of my race. There is only one race...the human race. As long as any group insists on identifying itself as a subgroup...it will suffer, especially in its own mind. I have no respect for people who describe themselves as hyphenated Americans....I understand the Irish celebrate on St. Patrick's Day and the Germans have Octoberfest...that is not what I am talking about. I mean the people who always in every conversation, every writing, identify themselves by their ethnicity. My family background is part Cherokee, we were here before the Mayflower...and the rest of my family has been here for hundreds of years....but you will never hear me identify myself as a Native American or any other hyphenation. Before 9/11, when pc people got on my last nerve I would tell them I was a white American. You should have seen that response. Since 9/11, if the pc police are around, I identify myself as an American....period. And I say it with such emphasis that the conversation stops there.

The other thing I sometimes do...if I have the time....is when someone identifies themselves as an African-American, I say, "Really, what part of Africa are you from?" You should see their faces. They have been spouting the politically correct drivel for so long, they don't even think about what they are saying.

My best friend is a black lady who was born in northern Mississippi in the 1950s. She has come a long way since then through hard work and intelligence, and I truly admire her. However, she was stopped one night for driving 5 mph over the limit. She was arrested, put in jail, and her car impounded. We had to get up at 3 am and bail her out. The bail was $350!!! Tell me that a white middle-aged female with a clean record would have been arrested (or even stopped or ticketed) for that offense.

I am not ever going to defend an injustice. However, getting back on topic...I doubt your friend calls herself an African-American.

Hi CC (grin)

I had an Army friend get pulled over. He asked the cop why and the cop (A Mass. State Policeman -- this was circa 1984) blurted: "Usually when we see a black guy in a car like this it's stolen!"

Bob was speechless. He would have expected trouble in Mississippi, but not here. But it happens. For what it's worth, the cop was ashamed as soon as he said it, and didn't ticket Bob. (Bob was speeding at the same speed as everyone else).

Occasionally. We've taken it upon herself to gently guide her toward being a conservative, but she's had the liberal Blacks Are Only Victims education; even though it didn't take, really, she still has the vocabulary and the abiding feeling that there's nothing she can "do" to change things. She was educated in a time and place when black schools got little or no resources and mainly existed to fulfill the barest letter of the law, at the time "separate but equal" which of course was never that. She's reading Thomas Sowell and she loathes the "black leaders" that the media wants us all to believe speak for all blacks. It's a good start.

Good work. We all need to grow beyond our beginnings. See if you can find something on Dr. Conde Rice for your friend to read. Dr. Rice was raised in segregated Birmingham.
