Hmm. The article is a bit conflicted. Jews succeed because they are intelligent, love learning, are ambitious, work hard. Jews succeed because of their genetic heritage. The first explanation sets them as role-models to imitate, the second explanation says there's no use imitating them unless you share their genetic heritage, because you can never be a Jew unless you were born to it.

Well, the Jews have a genetic heritage, undoubtedly, despite some intermarriage with other groups. But as it happens, their closest genetic relatives are Arabs. Both are considered to be Semitic peoples.

So, why aren't the Arabs so smart? It's not bad genes, it's bad attitude. Pretty much the same as many inner-city blacks in America. They see success and instead of imitating it, they envy it and try to take it away or destroy it. And Democrat politicians encourage them, to keep them on their vote plantation. Nothing to do with the genes, just the attitude.

I think you've got the Democrat party's "envy, take it away and destroy," concept down pat. I never saw it quite so clearly as during the decade we lived in Minnesota. The DFL should be renamed the Democrat Statist Envy party.

I've never been a believer in bio genetics accounting for success. If you follow through with it, it falls apart. I.E. when somone says blacks are inferior to whites, then why will see some blacks succeed, and in other cases some whites fail. Lets call a spade a spade. Its that some cultures are inferior. Boom, thats it.

Some cultures are inferior to others, arab culture is one of them. There idea of being educated is knowing the quran, not knowing math or science. When you have a culture that makes you complain all the time, and is rooted so much in jealousy, you will fail.

What on earth makes you think any of the Arab world is envious of the Jews? If you read ANYTHING from the 1920s and 1930s the Arabs were very sympathetic toward the Jewish refugees from the European progroms and persecutions.

I'm not a big believer in racial genetics explaining attainment either, but the argument for it is not as black and white (no pun) as your counter-argument. The "Bell Curve" did not suggest all blacks were dumb, and all whites were smart- it argued that in general blacks were less intelligent- i.e. there would be some black geniuses, and some white idiots. Based on some the goofs I've made in my life, I have to wonder if I'm not one of those white idiots.

i'm not sure I believe in that- my gut feeling is that environment/culture is the root explanation- but the hypothesis doesn't fall apart because their are exceptions to the rule.

It's the culture. Throughout history, much of Jewish culture has emphasized study and learning. Read the Diary of Anne Frank - a whole family plus others locked inside an attic for almost three years, and what do the children spend all day doing? Studying algebra, French, Latin, etc. When your family and culture value learning so acutely, you will produce people who will tend to succeed.

By contrast, if you focus only on a limited set of religious texts, greatly restrict contact with the outside world, and especially make sure that the stupidest and most docile women have the most children, then you will get generally backward people. And as we can observe in many times and places, the unsuccessful usually resent and hate the successful. Rather than emulating them and changing their own backward cultures, they attempt to destroy the successful.

Why wouldn't Jews believe in an afterlife?  That's what the Holy Scriptures are all about -- getting God's approval and entrance to the afterife.
