Flight 587 Eyewitnesses Insist Explosion Came Before Tail Broke Off

Two eyewitnesses to the Nov. 12 crash of American Airlines Flight 587 said over the weekend that investigators for the National Transportation Safety Board are wrong to focus on potential structural defects as the cause of the disaster - insisting instead that the plane's tail came off over New York's Jamaica Bay only after it exploded in a fireball.

"It was after the explosion," eyewitness Tom Lynch, a retired firefighter, told the New York Post. "I'm telling you, the tail was there until the second explosion."

"No tail fell off, not before the explosion. I swear to that," Lynch told the paper's Steve Dunleavy.

The eyewitness said there was absolutely no doubt about what he saw.

"I had my head up taking in that beautiful, clear day and was staring straight at the plane. It made a bank turn and suddenly there was an explosion, orange and black, on the right-hand side of the fuselage. It was a small explosion, about half the size of a car."

He continued:

"The plane kept on going straight for about two or three seconds as if nothing had happened, then ‘vwoof' - the second, big explosion on the right wing, orange and black. It was only then that the plane fell apart. It was after the explosion and I'm telling you, the tail was there until the second explosion."

Lynch, who lives near the Belle Harbor, N.Y., crash site, said he knew 13 others who also saw the explosion and/or fire.

One, retired police lieutenant Jim Conrad, told Dunleavy:

"I saw exactly what Tom saw. I was near a stoplight at the Marine Parkway Bridge. First, the small explosion. The plane kept on going, tail intact, then the big explosion and the plane nose-dived. The first thing I said was, 'The bastards did it again.'"

Lynch said he's tried to contact the FBI and the NTSB but they weren't interested in his story. Ditto Sens. Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton and his congressional representative, Anthony Weiner, who also gave him the brush-off.

"I got no response from anyone," he said.

Last week NewsMax.com asked New York state's newly appointed public security czar, James Kallstrom, why a traffic surveillance video that reportedly captured Flight 587's midair breakup has not been publicly released.

"I have not seen the tape. I heard some mention of it. But I've not seen the tape and I really have no knowledge of it," Kallstrom said.

"Why it hasn't been released, I suspect, is because the investigation is ongoing. But I don't know the answer to that."

WABC radio was interviewing people on the scene before ANY reporters arrived. They spoke to people in boats on the water and people in the area of the airport. NO ONE mentioned anything or any sound prior to the plane breaking apart. All said they saw and heard nothing unusual before the breakup. They said the plane stalled and there was silence for a few seconds before the plane made it's dive into the ground.

Anybody got a link to the original Dunleavy story? I shouldn't think NewsMax would dare to misrepresent what he said, but I'd like to see it.

This is the first eyewitness account I've seen that raises any real doubts. That's unlike TWA 800, where there were numerous such stories. But I'd like a closer look at it.

I'm not surprised that Hillary Clinton refuses to answer messages, because she never does, unless it's someone important with something to give her. But if the FBI is refusing to interview witnesses (assuming they haven't already talked to them before), that's troubling.

A small crack developed in the tail and caused the first explosion,

(similar to a bullet exploding a car's fuel tank and then making it it roll during a movie police chase)(uh huh right),

then the first small explosion caused the second big explosion, which caused the tail to fall off.

Why can't people see that?

My theroy:
One engine goes to reverse thruster on it's own. (Been know to happen on the 300). The engines are running pretty full when this happens. The results cause pilot (unaware of reversed thruster) to apply more power to maintain flight. That adds to the problem. The result of one engine in reverse and the other not causes a quick motion that takes the tail off. Yes it IS enough to take the tail and stabilizer off. The gyro effect of the engines powered in opposilte directions causes them to tear off. Hence the plane comes down.

Looks like we have another conspiracy of witnesses like with TWA800. Why do disinterested witnesses always get together in smoky back rooms to come up with their matching stories?

The stories don't match. Newscrap.com just isn't bothering to quote witnesses who didn't see an explosion. There are plenty of those.

I just ran a search for "587" and I don't find the Dunleavy story in the past couple of weeks. Frankly I don't trust NewsMax. I'd like to see the original story on this and see whether NewsMax has touched it up.

You can tell if the reverser goes on an engine. They looked at the engines. the reversers hadn't engaged.

It follows that those who didn't see the explosion weren't watching it until after the explosion. Most likely they saw flames and looked up. The many people who watched a normal plane flying along and then saw a fireball are the most reliable witnesses

I've always hated the ride in shaky Airbuses and told people I was afraid one would "vibrate" into pieces while I was on it. I could easily picture the quivering wings breaking off due to metal fatigue.

My first thought, when I heard about the crash, was that the plane was overloaded and that it shook or vibrated apart as the engines struggled.

I guess the tail wouldn't have broken off first in my scenario.

I was listening to WABC when the plane when down. Your description of contemporaneous eyewitness testimony is exactly what I heard, exactly.
