Goes to show you can't even trust a confession as conclusive evidence.

Don't quote me on this, but this is how I remember it. DeSalvo was a slime ball sexual predator that went around with a "measuring" scam to get some touchie, feelie on "naive" women. Seems he wound up getting arrested. At the same time, there were a series of murder/rapes. He shared a cell with who I believe was the real strangler. F.Lee Bailey defended him by getting him to admit he was the strangler, but that confession was not to be used against him. He pleaded guilty of rape and was later killed (?) died in prison. Don't know what happened to his cell mate. Anyone out there know? Does this sound about right? There were book and movie deals which I suspect Flea Baile got some bucks from. Tony Curtis played him in the movie. One of his better rolls.

I believe there was at least one murder that did not fit the pattern of the other killings - the victim was young and the other victims were middle aged or older, and maybe some differences in the method as well - I worked one summer with a young man whose grandmother was one of those killed and he said his father had tried to kill DeSalvo but was stopped. There was a theory that the killer got into the victims' apartments by pretending to be a repairman from the landlord. But one victim not killed by De Salvo does not prove he did not kill the others. It is true that as the "Measuring Man" his victims were young, and not murdered, so becoming the Boston Strangler would have been a change for De Salvo.

DeSalvo was murdered in prison, the day before he was to meet with a reporter to discuss his story.

If you do some research on this site, you should find past posts on this subject with more info. I agree with the other poster that DeSalvo most likely was not the killer, but was given enough info by the real killer in jail to be convincing. The man who interviewed DeSalvo and obtained his "confession" was some political hack, and the transcripts from the interview are filled with leading questions by him and faulty details by DeSalvo.
