Vanity: Am I being Hacked? HELP!?!
Self | 12/7/01 | Me!

Posted on 12/07/2001 8:02:06 PM PST by 50sDad

Twice in the past 24 hours, I have gotten emails with "re:" as a subject title, and no text. I "Replyed" without opening to one of them, and the response window showed me two HTML tags that would not have been visible on the message. Here is the first one, edited, with parenthesis in place of the HTML brackets and number strings edited out:

(iframe src=mailbox:/[data string leading to my Inbox]?id=[12 digits].[buncha digits & numbers] %40mx16.mx.voyager.net&number=110090047&part=1.2 height=0 width=0)

The "response to" line of the email had a valid name string with a underline before the first letter of the name, a technique I have used to prevent spam.

Sender was Kieran Silk <_jackier@telstra.easymail.com.au.

Can anybody tell me if this is a method to hack me somehow, or just an honest goof?

I've gotten some like this in the past and simply deleted them, and noticed no hacking. I wouldn't worry.

But do have Zone Alarm running, just in case, as I do.

The underscore before the email address is usually associated with a virus having penetrated your inbox. Go to http://www.mcafee.com and they have an online scanner that will scan and clean your entire system of viruses. If it can't clean it'll tell you how to do it manually. The underscore has appeared most recently with the Badtrans virus. Whoever's email program that sent it to you may not even be aware that the email was sent to you.

Just the latest virus going around. Make sure you are running anti-virus software such as Norton or McAfee and keep it updated.

Yes, by all means go to http://www.zonelabs.com and download the free version of ZoneAlarm. Also, you should consider either buying a good anti-virus program from either McAfee or Norton http://www.symantec.com or get the free anti-virus program at http://www.grisoft.com

The underscore before the email address is usually associated with a virus having penetrated your inbox.

What if you don't open the attachment that comes with an email from an address with an underscore at the beginning? I ran my updated Norton Antivirus this evening and it came up with nothing, and I have my Zone Alarm on.

GO read the online details about a firewall. Firewalls do VERY LITTLE to stop a virus.

I've been getting two or three emails a day like you described for the past 2 weeks. Sending test emails to some of the addresses just came back undeliverable??????

Still pondering and researching the answer. I'm guessing a worm in other people's Outlook Express producing the emails. This doesn't explain the bad email addresses though.

Holler if you find out anything please.

I didn't try to say a firewall could stop a virus, but that it could fend off hackers.

I have had 3 virus attacks in a couple of days. I normally have none. Norton anti-virus 2001 stopped them. I also use Zone Alarm.

A chainmail "coif" can aid in protecting one's head, neck and shoulders, while one is being "hacked".

I think you are only getting spammed, not hacked.

If you're using Outlook Express, a plug-in to filter out the HTML may be on the way -

The Register - December 6, 2001 - "No-HTML" plug-in for Outlook available

It only works on Outlook now, but perhaps it will work with OE in the future.
