NEW YORK, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A U.S.-based cell of the Al Qaeda terror network nearly launched an attack on a major target in Washington, D.C. after September 11, Newsweek has learned. Intelligence sources say a Qaeda "sleeper cell" in the U.S. was poised to launch the attack -- perhaps against the Capitol Building. The sources believe that the FBI, in its sweep against visa violators and other illegals of Mideast backgrounds, picked up members of a "support cell" tasked with providing logistics help to the people actually carrying out the mission. Intelligence sources say the would-be terrorists then went ...

Yes, it's the same - but it's nice to have a thread that isn't messed up by one individual. This is a good place to start over.

Thanks for posting, anymouse!

Annie's point is well taken however. The other thread turned into a bit of a cesspool. Maybe this will be better.

Gee. Looks like Ashcroft's detaining of suspects was a good idea, eh? We have a right to expect apologies from Leahy, Kennedy, et al, but am not holding my breath.

One of the samples turned up a "positive indicator" for Bacillus Anthracis, or anthrax. All of the samples are being retested, the source tells Newsweek.

Remember, some of the powder from the Anthrax hoaxes turned up "positive" in the preliminary tests as well. This is not yet definitive proof the Anthrax is from a foreign source (and even if that is Anthrax, the possibility exists that the US attacks still came from domestic conservative terrorists).

(I'm not desperately trying to defend the "domestic conservative terrorists" theory, I always thought it was pretty unlikely, albeit possible)

And the infamous Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's closest lieutenant and considered the brains behind Al Qaeda, may have been directly involved in the biological program. Al-Zawahiri, may have been hit by U.S. bombs last week, according to unconfirmed British intelligence reports. Northern Alliance soldiers raided his house in Kabul on November 13 and a senior American intelligence official tells Newsweek that it resembled the lair of a mad scientist. Soldiers found grenades, blasting caps, electronic components and "various solid and liquid substances," including white crystals and extremely fine, silvery powders in jars and plastic bags, and mysterious liquids in shampoo bottles labeled "special medicine." American intelligence later collected samples from Northern Alliance colleagues and conducted chemical and biological tests. One of the samples turned up a "positive indicator" for Bacillus Anthracis, or anthrax. All of the samples are being retested, the source tells Newsweek.

From Raleigh/Durham to the Atlanta based Center for Disease control, American Scientists have been in awe of the ability of primitive society, such as Afganistan, to achieve such results without federal grants. Dr. Zieg Teist, a research Chemist, and himself the recipient of $millions in federal research grants, found himself speechless when Wolf Blitzer, CNN reporter for the Atlanta based Cable News Network, asked how Middle Eastern Mullahs could sit on their Asses and achieve more than their American apologists? I am in total agreement with you. The Libs will argue till they can't breathe anymore that it is a civil rights violation because 2 innocent cabbies and 3 convenience store clerks were out of work for months.

Hell, with the Dems and Jumpin' Jim Jeffords in control of the Senate, look for bigtime $$$ going to the cabbies and 7/11ers as well as a national holiday for 'Johnny Taliban' Walker!!

This information explains why VP Cheney was hidden away, in undisclosed locations, separate from the president. It's become a joke for late night comedians, but this repercussion of the bombing was really extraordinary, and wouldn't have happened if not required.

I think it might be years before we know how brave President and Mrs. Bush were in the first immediate days following the attack. Close held in the administration and among congressional leadership, but I bet they knew at the time, and with certainty, that another attack could be imminent and was aimed at them.

I'm not sure I asked if anyone else noticed, but in the first few weeks after Sept 11, Trent Lott and Tom Daschle's hair changed remarkedly. Lott lost the shiny black look almost overnight, and Daschle's hair went from that gawd-awful dyed red job to salt & pepper gray. They knew. I think all of them must have been shell-shocked.

We won't know the details for a long time, of how calmly President Bush and his team...including Ashcroft...guided us through what could have been...too scary to even consider.

Agreed. The "Triad" of those who want to destory this country will continue on their "jihad" to destroy the Bush Administration. I'd like to see little Tommy D walk barefoot into the Senate chamber and deliver his next speech against President Bush. The twerp's Napoleanonic, penis-envy, bombastic rhetoric is becoming so friggin boring, it almost defies the intellectual definition of a thought-process filibuster.

This liliputian munchkin should work for the Chinese in developing an alternative to the infamous Chinese "water-torture." If that doesn't work, he should take up residence in North Korea and beat the psycholigical crap out of Americans who fought for this country.

Thanks for my FREEper-buddies' patience in rolling that vent off my chest...

Regards, Mark Davis

", the possibility exists that the US attacks still came from domestic conservative terrorists)."

But basic "coincidences" still point to Al-Qaeda:

1. Mohammed Atta researched anthrax.
2. Atta spent a lot of time studying crop-dusting dispersal possibilities.
3. The Florida anthrax event took place a mile away from Atta's last pre-9/11 flight.
4. 9/11 suicide bombers lived near the Florida Ax event.
5. And now, we find Atta stayed in Central New Jersey this summer for awhile
6. AND that he stayed near Kathy Nguyen in the Bronx

God, I just read that other thread - ROFLMAO!!! Anyone seen that hot dip foil vat??? If we're quiet enough in here, that individual won't venture in here, as I think he's guarding that thread like a rabid dog. Someone needs to inform him to lay off chemicals that end in "amine" and get some help and/or sleep!

OMG - they're here....they're after me....BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA

Western intelligence agencies estimate that bin Laden funneled as much as $100 million a year to the Taliban -- twice Afghanistan's official annual budget.

That's serious money -- more than bin Laden's personally got. I wonder where he got that kind of cash? Two main possibilities: Saudi and Iraq

Like I said, "the possibility exists"--that's all.

All the hard evidence points to Al Qaida. In fact, the only thing DU says points to the "right-wing wacko" theory is that a couple Democrats were the most prominent targets of the Anthrax attacks--but the "Army of God"/"Elohim City" wacko types are NOT Republicans, they consider Republicans to be just as bad as Democrats!

The only people saying it's the right-wingers are the left-wing nuts, and the FBI. The commies will believe anything that makes us right-wingers look bad. The FBI is purposely spreading disinformation so innocent American Muslims aren't harassed by other civilians, and so Al Qaida doesn't know how close we are to catching them all.

But I won't say we know "for sure" until we really are 99% sure.

That's what I was thinking, except we really don't know exactly how much he has. A lot of rich Saudis who gave him money could be in BIG TROUBLE right now. Or it could be that Osama inherited most of that money--in which case, his family (a whole bunch of rich Saudis) is in BIG TROUBLE right now (because they claimed he didn't get a full inheritance, that would mean they were liars).

The Kingdom of Saud could be in for a few high-profile executions, but I suspect they are going to go out of their way to keep this real, real quiet. Maybe in exchange for that, they will clamp down on terrorist financing in the future, and will not whine about our bases.

Duh, I've thought for weeks that the reason we haven't had any major incidents is because all the potential perps were in jail. Only lately have the pundits been bringing this up - pointing out that it's hard to prove a negative - something that didn't happen. Leahy etal are either real dumb or they think we are.
