Ultra-conservative activist David Horowitz shot through North Carolina last week to take aim at his favorite target: left-wing college students and professors.
But his intent was quite a turnaround from his quest earlier this year, when he argued that free speech often is stifled by the political correctness practiced at many of the nation's universities.
Horowitz raised quite a ruckus as he sought to buy advertising space in college newspapers to attack the rather dubious idea of paying reparations to the descendants of African slaves. He crafted his ad so it would be as offensive as possible to liberal and minority students, in order to prove his contention that left-wing censorship is running rampant in American academia. The response he got was exactly what he had probably hoped for, if not more.
Now he's back with a very different message, which he promoted Wednesday at a luncheon sponsored by the conservative Raleigh think tank, The John Locke Foundation, and at an evening speaking engagement at UNC-Chapel Hill.
In his latest public campaign, he is lashing out at campus peace activists and anti-war protestors, labeling the sometimes naive but generally well-meaning young idealists as "threats to national security." He reserved special fire for UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser for not doing enough to promote any responses to several of the recent anti-war rallies held on the campus.
It appears that Horowitz's conception of free speech is a purely one-way street, reserved only for people who share his views. Unfortunately for this former 1960s radical who has turned into the self-appointed head of the university thought police, it just doesn't work that way.
Universities are meant to be places where young people can be exposed to the widest variety of ideas possible, from Adam Smith to Martin Luther King Jr. And they should be a fertile breeding ground for innovational thought that students otherwise might not be exposed to in mainstream media outlets. Reversing that could transform our institutions of higher learning into simple vocational schools.
Horowitz apparently never learned the lesson he so fervently tried to teach with the placement of his anti-reparations advertisements.

This article is from my local paper, the Rocky Mount Telegram (also known as the "Tell-A-Lie").
Although unsigned, I imagine its author is probably the newspaper's editor, Jeff Herrin.
If you should feel the need to contact him, please be courteous.

Another voice at UNC: conservative (I got to hear Horowitz speak tonight)

Horowitz: Leftists Dominate Universities
I wonder if this dope actually reads what he writes, or if he genuinely belives this drivel.
I agree wholeheartedly that the university should be "a fertile breeding ground for innovational thought", however, at most college campuses, and especially at UNC-CH, diversity is defined as an African-American liberal, a gay liberal, a hispanic liberal, et al ad nauseum. The irrational outrage directed at people that dare voice a differing conservative opinion merely serves to reinforce this premise.
Horowitz's first name becomes longer every day.
Must be a product of the college he's talking about.
What's next?
"Racist, Misogynist, Puppy-Kicking, Gun-Toting, Ultra-Conservative Activist & Evil Patriarchal Oppressor David Horowitz" is probably a good guess.

True story....Wife went to UNC, most of her friends went to UNC.
Went on an overnight trip with wife and friends. Wife was tired, went to bed early. I stayed up with her friends and played a game called 'Categories'. FYI, in 'Categories', a person sitting at the table picks a category (like "James Bond movies") then everyone around the table has to name something in the category. First one that can't come up with something in the category, has to take a (usually alcoholic) drink. (It's fun. Trust me.)
At any rate, my turn came up. I picked 'US Presidents', figuring that it would be easy. I was wrong. They came up with Bush (this was before GWB), and Clinton, Reagan and Washington. Oh, and that Jefferson guy that had the affair with the slave. That was it.
Of her friends that attended UNC....one has a law degree, one has a BA in history (but not US History, apparently), one has a degree in English, and one, perversely, has a Masters of Education.
Also, as a side note, they didn't believe me when I told them that John Adams and John Quincy Adams were not the same person.
I am glad to say that I did NOT attend UNC.
You forgot Capitalist. It's all about the $$. :-)
Here, have some tofu and give me ten "Hail Hillarys". You'll feel better.
PS....Would that be 'Heil Hillary'? Or am I trying to be too literal?
Never, never, I tell you!
She has NO intention of furthering her political career and being president. She just wants to represent NY because she best understands the needs of New Yorkers and they love her for it. The warm response that she got at 'The Concert for New York' amply demonstrated that.
And, you've never lived until you've had a good hot steaming bowl of tofu. MMMMMMmmmmm........
/sarcasm off
Mr. and Mrs. America, I personally urge you to support Mr. Horowitz's campaign in every way possible. Forget the politicians. Instead, speak to your neighbors. Form committees. Demand to see what is actually written in the textbooks given to our kids. Write letters demanding protection for conservative students and faculty. Show up at David's campaign stops. Finally, and most importantly, I urge you to immediately send David as much money as you possibly can to save our conservative values from extinction. And please, DIG DEEP because this is no time for half measures.
With David's leadership, we can and we will DEFEAT INTELLECTUAL TERRORISM and save our country from the evils of FULL BLOWN SOCIALISM.
America, let's roll!
