Jonathan Alter is a sniveling idiot. Does he think that John Ashcroft just goes off on his own for his political agenda? I don't think so. And Alter misstates and misinterprets the exchange between Ashcroft and Kennedy.

"To pursue his pro-gun agenda, Ashcroft is willing to make himself a hypocrite, misstate the law, defy the FBI and jeopardize his investigation of Al Qaeda." (Newsweek)
Jonathan Alter should know that the FBI reports to the Attorney General - not the other way around!
Newsweek just needs new editors - who actually know who reports to who in Washington, and aren't going to lie about it.

Dear Jonathan Alter,
"But this week we learned the truth about John Ashcroft, and its ugly. In his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee today, the attorney general said that fighting terrorism must be our first law-enforcement priority.

Agreed. Johnathan will have his underwear in knots for at least the next three years. He can't stand a GOP White House!

So much for the luv fest between the conservatives and liberals to support the war on terrorism. The libs can't touch Bush due to pole numbers so first it was Powell and now it's Ashcrofts turn. My guess is Powell will get a re-peat and then on to commerce and treasury.

Sounds to me like the law should be changed, agreed? Immigrants trying to buy guns in their first few days in this country strikes me as something we should know about these days.

No. Ashcroft has answered the Senate's questions, and testified. He is open about what he is doing. Good ole Janet would always mumble something about the matter being under investigation, therefore she couldn't comment. Or faint at church or shake so much she got sympathy instead of hard questions. And the EO on military tribunals is self-limiting. I don't believe it is an open dated one, it expires in three years.

John Ashcroft TOLD them what they needed to do to view the records of those that were denied. Change the law. This is obviously what he WANTS them to do. Then they'll have their registration list. He can write all the letters to the NRA he wants, I'm not convinced.
Any confirmation that the rejected records are routinely used by other agencies? They are evidence of a crime, so I imagine they wouldn't be destroyed. If this is true, why the change in policy now, if not to force the issue?

You'd be screaming (properly) like a sex crime victim had Reno pushed the crap Ashkroft has.

And when the next Billy Clinton is elected and has the powers Ashkroft has sought?
