OREGON CITY High School's Mascot in Danger - Freeper Alert

OREGON CITY -- A burly guy with a coonskin cap, Pioneer Pete stands like a sentinel throughout Oregon City High School. He stares from hallway murals, the backs of varsity jackets and walls in the gymnasium and football stadium.

A musket in his grip and a knife slung off his hip, Pioneer Pete is catching some flak these days. Some students and administrators say his weapon-toting ways break rules that apply to students. He's even been booted off the cover of a brochure advertising the search for a new superintendent.

"We have police officers roaming the school, looking for suspicious characters who may or may not have a gun, and by having a mascot up on the wall with a musket and knife, I don't think it helps matters," said Nick Dorzweiler, 16, a junior.

Complaints like that prompted a makeover of sorts. In some of Pioneer Pete's images, his trusty musket has been replaced with a flag pole.

This week, the Pioneer Pete flap found its way into the superintendent search. After a brief conversation by school board members Monday night, the image of an armed pioneer will be erased from the cover of a pamphlet sent to candidates.

"You have to admit, we are looking for a superintendent, and here's a picture of a guy toting a gun," said Bonnie Webber, director of human resources for Oregon City schools.

Either the pioneer will have his gun deleted, or he'll be replaced by an unarmed pioneer couple.

All this talk about confiscating Pioneer Pete's gun has some in Oregon City wondering whether the district is rewriting history. After all, pioneers carried guns. They needed a musket handy for protection and to provide food for their families.

"Every book you read about Oregon history, they stopped along the way to kill animals for the meat," said Don Andersen, a member of the school board and a 1950 graduate of Oregon City High. "That is the way it was used.

"I had to chuckle to be honest with you," Andersen said of the decision to disarm the pioneer. "We have got more important things to discuss than taking Pioneer Pete's gun away from him."

"We have police officers roaming the school

Do the police carry guns? If so, shouldn't they turn in their guns for a flag too?

(/absurdity)

It would seem that the educators in this school are too stupid to teach the students that there is an appropriate place for the weaponry the mascot is toting. On the old frontier when your very life depends on being able to skillfully employ them is appropriate. The halls of a high school are not.
Why is that such a tough lesson to teach?

Maybe Pete had better turn in the coonskin cap too; cruelty to animals you know! We don't want to upset the animal rights crowd too! Geez, don't these people have better things to do with their time - like teach?!

Insert a safety lock into the gun and replace the knife with nail clippers?

This is ridiculous. When are they going to come after the musket-toting Mountaineer at WVU?

They are attempting to teach kids that guns will never, and HAVE NEVER played an important role in protecting our lives and liberty. They want everyone to believe that the early settlers just called 911 when the "native Americans" decided to "celebrate their diversity" by scalping the kids and burning down the cabin.

The gun grabbing nuts seek to take away our gun rights by distorting the history being taught in the public schools. Teaching the next generation of voters that not only are guns and gun rights not needed now; they were NEVER needed.

They are attempting to "rectify" the record a la Winston Smith in 1984.

I would bet he is wearing "buckskin" clothing which should be removed too.

But then we have another problem.

No. A nude adult male mascot would be very PC, especially if he had his arms around a male student.

If they can erase guns from our past, you can bet they intend to erase guns from our future.

Liberals attack guns like they attack everything else on their agenda. They go to the schools. They attempt to raise the next generation with their ideology in hopes of shaping the country to their idea of utopia. They have done this with every major issue they had on their agenda. They've done it already with environmentalism, and to an extent marxism and atheism. It will continue until it is stopped. They are busy doing it right as we speak with the homosexual agenda. Conservatives are too busy fighting other fronts while being basically bred out of existence.

Well said. No conservative can afford to ignore public education. It is the ever present end run to victory for them. Whether it's the 2nd Amendment, abortion, or homosexual rights. However ludricous the proposal (like gay marriage), they simply "educate" the next generation of voters to their way of thinking, and the conservative vote is cancelled out.

Homeschooling and private schools are great, but unless public education is taken hold of out of the liberals' hands, we WILL BE out-voted in the future, as they have the numerical edge in pupils under instruction.
