The Pentagon, in a serious setback for the Bush administration's missile defense plans....

The program, which was scheduled to be deployed in two years, was designed to protect Navy ships and ports from attacks by missiles or manned aircraft. Like the land-based Patriot antimissile system, it was intended to provide a last-ditch defense of small, selected areas if other defenses failed.

Pray for America

China and their military partner Russia must be celebrating! This way they can be sure of successful attacks on our our ports and military ships and other effected areas.

"John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, an independent consulting firm, said he expected the Navy to renegotiate its contracts with companies working on the Navy Wide Area program, which include Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, L-3 Communications, United Defense and Orbital Sciences."

Every time I see this guy's name in print, I find myself forced to remind everyone that John Pike, self-proclaimed "expert" on space and military matters, apparently does not have a college degree of any kind. His CV at FAS.org contained no degree information. I wrote him, pointing out the "unfortunate omission" and saying that I was sure he would want to correct it as soon as possible. I received no response and the bio did not change.

Now he's left FAS (or was kicked out?) and has started up another front organization.

This is the man who, in an interview, said the Apollo I disaster was "an explosion." There was no explosion on Apollo I.

The Pakistani paper's second editorial raises some pertinent concerns about President Bush's decision to abrogate the ABM treaty. It warns that deploying a missile shield will spur China to dramatically expand its missile fleet to ensure a continued nuclear deterrent against the U.S. "If China begins a build up…one effect is predictable: India will remove all stops and go for a big build up of both missiles and nuclear weapon... Should India take that road, who can then prevent Pakistani hardliners from repeating that sorry saying: 'We will eat grass but counter India.' Asia does not need any of it."

And Beijing's official People's Daily certainly echoed the Pakistani concerns. "The spread of the news has stunned the world," wrote the Communist Party organ. "This not only represents the US withdrawal from an important international agreement for the first time since the end of World War II in 1945, but also implies the disintegration of the international mechanism for prohibiting strategic defense that has continued for almost 30 years... Only three months after the occurrence of the September 11 incident when the international community is helping the United States in winning the Afghanistan War, the United States once again turns a deaf ear to the just voice of the international community, this cannot but once again generate a deep impression on the people about the US international behavior which is 'full of hegemonic air'

But Germany's Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung was more upbeat. "Cancellation of the ABM Treaty will not plunge the United States and Russia back into the old system of antagonism," the paper writes. "Cooperative elements have long since moved to the fore of the west's relations with Russia, which is more dependent on cooperation with western countries than ever before. This explains Moscow's unperturbed reaction to the U.S. withdrawal."

This is what is being released to the press. If your country was being succesful in building a missile defense system wouldn't it be nice if the world thought you failed? Do we really know what's happening at all?

Yep, if we'd only been teaching math and English for the last 12-15 years, who knows what we'd be capable of?

Hmmmmm. Much of the material appears to be critical of Bush. Don't be surprised if your thread disappears.

This is really a false article. The Missle system is not scrapped. We already have a missle defense system designed to protect Navy ships so they are simply raising the bar and going way beyond this phase. Don't get suckered in to the title of this article as it's false !

This article is nothing short of lie. This is simply untrue. I would think that the commander in chief would not allow subordinates to cancel his pet defense system! Come on people, think before posting.

Let's be clear: this is NOT a cancellation of the entire concept of the missile defense system...it is the cancellation of a particular, specific system.

President Bush is still committed to investigating and testing an overall system to protect the nation from a rogue missile. Testing is the key word here, too, which is something many on the left and right often forget.

"How can we spend all this money on an unproven system?" asks the Dash-holes of the world. Well, we're testing the capabilities of our science is the answer--not unlike NASA in the 60s began testing our capabilities for space travel.

"How soon can we deploy this system?" a fellow conservative might ask. The answer is: not until we're ready. Plenty of exploration and experimentation must be done first.

"It warns that deploying a missile shield will spur China to dramatically expand its missile fleet..."

And that's what we want. China really only has two options:

1. Attempt to match U.S. defense-spending, go broke, and break up ala the Soviet Union as well as every other nation that has overspent on their military (see Paul Kennedy's The Rise and Fall of The Great Powers on my user profile), or
2. Admit that the U.S. really is this planet's dominant military and economic power (which will soon be immune to China's 18 ICBM's via GWB's national Missile Defense system).

Either option is acceptable to the U.S.

It is within the insidious Marxist-Socialist paradigm of Biden, Kennedy, Daschle and Gephardt to not only bankrupt this nation redistributing your wealth in an inept and wasteful fashion, but to leave it helpless in the area of national defense.

If the article was honest, it would stay. The title is as misleading as a Clinton disposition.
