Rice Calls America 'Israel's Best Friend'
Jerusalem Post ^ | 12/17/01 | Lamia Lahoud

Posted on 12/17/2001, 11:07:52 PM by veronica

America is Israel's best friend and it will continue its war against terror wherever necessary, although not necessarily by the same means as in Afghanistan, US National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice assured Israelis yesterday.

She said the US is pressuring Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat to take serious steps to wipe out terror and is going to pressure all states to do the same, whether they are part of the anti-terror coalition or not.

Rice spoke by satellite to a conference on "The Balance of National Strength and Security" at the Dan Accadia Hotel in Herzliya.

"Israel will never have a stronger friend than the United States," she said. "We will not have finished our mission until all terror networks have been wiped out."

"President [George W.] Bush has said that there can be no good and bad terror," she said.

"The president has a positive vision of the Middle East where Israelis and Palestinians live in peace, but that vision can only be realized once terror has been ruled out," she said.

Rice said the US priority is hunting down the Qaida network, but did not rule out actions against Iraq.

The regime of Saddam Hussein, she said, was a threat before the terror attacks in the US on September 11 and remains a threat to the region "as long as it stays in power." She did not say how the US would deal with Iraq.

Rice praised the level of security cooperation between the US and Israel, implying that there is no need to increase that cooperation through a joint defense pact.

"The United States has always done all that is needed to help Israel to defend itself," she said. "At this point, our cooperation is... excellent... we can explore new ways to improve our cooperation. She pointed to cooperation on anti-ballistic missile programs.

Answering a question by former Mossad chief Shabtai Shavit on America's double standard toward Saudi Arabia, Rice said Saudi Arabia is a strategic ally and helped the US defeat Saddam during the Gulf War.

She said Saudi Arabia's support during the Gulf War also contributed to Israel's security.

tr.v. Archaic friend·ed, friend·ing, friends
To befriend.

[Middle English, from Old English frond. See pr- in Indo-European Roots.]
friendless adj.
friendless·ness n.
Word History: A friend is a lover, literally. The relationship between Latin amcus “friend” and am “I love” is clear, as is the relationship between Greek philos “friend” and phile “I love.” In English, though, we have to go back a millennium before we see the verb related to friend. At that time, frond, the Old English word for “friend,” was simply the present participle of the verb fron, “to love.” The Germanic root behind this verb is *fr-, which meant “to like, love, be friendly to.” Closely linked to these concepts is that of “peace,” and in fact Germanic made a noun from this root, *frithu-, meaning exactly that. Ultimately descended from this noun are the personal names Frederick, “peaceful ruler,” and Siegfried, ”victory peace.” The root also shows up in the name of the Germanic deity Frigg, the goddess of love, who lives on today in the word Friday, “day of Frigg,” from an ancient translation of Latin Veneris dis, “day of Venus.”

What I mean is, Rice didn't say Israel is our BEST friend, I didn't mean to imply Israel wasn't a friend of the US.

She is right, and we are perhaps one of Israel's only friends in the modern world.
When Bush was on TV the other day, I couldn't help notice how he stood directly in front of the flag of Israel...it was so obvious.
Unlike the past administration which wanted to appear impartial, the Bush administration is clearly pro-Israel. I like it. I see it as a great priviledge to stand against the Jew-haters in the world.
