What do Any of You Think of Tom Clancy's Video Games (Is it a Good Present to Get?)
Me

What do you all think of the Rainbow Six games, such as the latest one I saw on the store shelf, Ghost Recon? Is it fun to play? Is it stupid? I'm wondering if it would make a good present.

Man, I spent too many nights up till sunrise playing Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear! I would spend hour upon hour playing it. The graphics are great, it has a realistic feel with cool missions. And it always great to waste a few terrorists. Buy it, you will not be disappointed

The games a vary cool, and try to be a realistic as possible (real weapons and if you get hit *once* you go down). If you or anyone you know is into shooter type of games, then these games will be like crack: You can't smoke just one rock :-)

I personally wish someone would give *me* those games for Christmas.

I liked Rainbow6 a lot. Very realistic, right down to the equipment and the tactics. Unlike a lot of video games, if you get shot by the bad guy, you're dead. This keeps you on your toes. I liked that realism.

I heard the expansion module, Rogue Spear, is great but I haven't tried it.

It is very realistic and, since reality is hard, it's a ball-buster. The degree of reality is probalby too much; in reality the guys on your side are half-way intelligent!

It's a fun game, once you spend many hours learning the interface, but be aware that it's a very tough one.

I hate the plane sequence. Looooord do I hate the plane sequence. It's harder getting in than they suggest and it's _not_ as hard doing a stair assault as they have it.

I've been playing the Ghost Recon demo...stunning graphics, more of a military theme than the Rainbow/Rogue series. Very difficult, the artificial intel of the computer opponents is good. Demo available as a download at the Red Storm site, and is featured on one of the PC gamer magazine demo disks. Caution...need a fast computer and good graphics card.

I have every single Rainbow Six game, Rouge Spear and Urban Operations, Covert Operations, (except for the new one, "Ghost Recon" which I'm gonna buy this week!). I don't play ANY games, no Nintendo, no Playstation, no computer games, just Rainbow Six. I agree with the poster who said getting into R6 is like a bad crack addiction!!!

the graphics are awesome, and you get both planning mode and action mode. The shooting is awesome, the basic weapons are awesome, and there are TONS of modification packs on the internet for everything from gattling guns, an entire HK (Heckler & Koch) series, wild west cowboys, etc etc.

This is a badass game and you can get the bundled pack including Rouge Spear and Urban Operations mission pack (I think it also comes with Covert Ops) in the "Platinum Pack" for around $40. WELL WORTH IT FOR ANYONE WHO DINKS WITH COMPUTER GAMES!!!

also, as soon as you play it online, the game becomes 100 times better because there are new weapons, new maps (levels) and there are some pretty sharp people playing, so it keeps you on your toes. This is a perfect 10 game.

Ghost Recon looks SOOOO cool, but from what I've read you need a fast machine to play it (mines to slow currently) - more then recommended. I'd have at least a 1Ghz processor for Ghost Recon.

As far as sports games go, EASports NHL 2002 is a hell of alot of fun. Awesome graphics and audio, great cinematics, cool game play. I'm not a huge hockey fan, but I love it.

I 've got every one of the RainBow Six, Rogue Spear and add-ons. Just got Ghost Recon for my birthday. My son and I paly them all the time. Great games, not at all like the standard FPS with powerups.

There is a Planning phase before you actually start playing a mission and some younger people may find that part boring, but you can use "standard" plans if you want.

If you have any interest at all in these types of games, it's money well worth spending.

PS. Multi-player is a blast.

Really I've got an Athlon 600Mhz 384MB Ram and a GeForce 2 MX-400.

I don't have a huge tollerance for poor performance though. I recently got Commanche 4 (it said minimum 400 Mhz) and it ran like crap - unplayable.

Ghost Recon said something like 450Mhz minimum and so I was afraid it wouldn't run?

I haven't run into an performance problems in any of the games. I have a PIII 500 with a Viper 550.

I'm just starting the Ghost Recon missions and so far I haven't noticed any performance problems.

I tried the IL-2 Sturmovik demo and it's unplayable on my system. Too bad cuz it looks like a great flight sim.

Awesome game. If the recipient of the gift is an action/adventure type gamer, they will love it. One of my all-time favorites. They did a great job in the development of it.

Ghost Recon is a great game. The fact that people already are making scenarios for this independently is a real bonus too because the game only has 15 missions - I shouldn't say "only" because they are not an easy 15 missions.

I would suggest that you have at least a NVIDIA 32mb GeForce2 card to play this game - if you do have one, update the driver too to get the best performance. I do not know about CPU speed for the machine as I am using a 1Ghz Athlon but the game is graphically intensive and you need a good video card just to get the detail that the game offers. I would suggest picking up one if you don't have a good card already(they go for about $70 with most on-line retailers). If you do have a 450mhz processor, make sure you have the max amount of memory that you can get in your machine - with RAM prices so cheap, it is a sin to NOT take advantage. Crucial.com is the place for that - lifetime guarantee and no hassle returns. (I don't often recommend companies but Crucial has been great to me). This should help your PC deal with the game and cut down the time it takes to access the hard drive.

The game takes less planning that Rainbow Six and it relies on you "thinking on your feet" much more. This simplified start-up might make a lot of gamers a lot happier. It also deals with more "outdoor" covert op's instead of indoor actions. I find that running down winding corridors makes me sick to the stomach - a reaction that some people have to such games

If you are looking for "more zombies" on each "level" you will be highly disappointed and I would suggest getting an X-box and getting HALO or getting Diablo II - both are games that friends have recommended. If you are looking for something that is more "realistic," Ghost Recon is the game for you.

You will not be disappointed with Ghost Recon if you like realism based games. The fact that you can play it on line makes it great also - although I haven't tried to do this yet. There are a bunch of fan sites out there too and it seems that more are coming each day - do a search on Google to find them - so when you are done with the first 15 missions, go and download a mission someone created - or create your own if you feel up to the task.

as an alternative, i would suggest Half Life.

it does not require as fast a system, the game looks great and the on line stuff, including the free mods like Counterstrike and Day of Defeat are amazing.

it was the best value in a game i have ever purchased

As an alternative to Half-Life, I suggest Halo on Microsoft's XBOX. It has all of Half-Life's strengths (dark mood, cinematic interludes, deathmatches and multiplayer) but also additional enhanced features (Dolby Digital surround sound, non-carpal tunnel inducing controller, use of vehicles, advanced friendly AI). Nonstop action and the marines even talk smack at the enemy.
