[history]
December 18, 2001 -- The Army pressured the filmmakers of "Black Hawk Down" to change the name of the war hero portrayed by Ewan McGregor - because the real-life soldier is serving a 30-year prison term for rape and child molestation, says the man who wrote the book that spawned the movie.

Stebbins, 36, a former baker from upstate Ithaca, had tried and failed to join the Army three times during the Persian Gulf War and finally made it into the crack Rangers unit, Bowden's book says. Is this the dumbing down of the military that happened under Clinton's watch?

Interesting. Stebbins was discussed more than a little in the book.

I'm sorry to hear this film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. I vowed that after seeing Pearl Harbor I'd never watch another of his films. He'll turn any script, regardless of how much potential it has, into another "Independence Day" knock off.

I would suggest to all, if they have the chance, to read the book first. Will provide a great background on the matter at hand.

Hey, why not... being a rapist didn't stop Clinton from becoming President... The difference between them is that Stebbins did serve in the military, did perform acts of bravery in the service of his country, and, when he committed crimes, was held fully responsible for them.

I wonder how that happened Ranger units have always had a hell of a time getting admin and supply types. My supply clerk in 1st Bat was a skinny little Vietnamese kid who didn't weigh enough to jump. He had to put on about 20 lbs before he was allowed to jump, because we thought he wouldn't be able to hold the parachute down and would drift off the DZ. Basically, if a supply guy volunteered for a Ranger Bn, he got in, as long as he got through RIP. No need for them to necessarily go to Ranger School.

War heros are not saints. He was a very brave individual in battle and proved it.But he also has tremendous character flaws.Unfortunatly, history shows that many individuals with outstanding qualities have committed grievious errors or crimes. Wasn't it Jesus who said: "that he who is without sin should throw the first stone."

I'm sorry to hear this film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Ugh! I had no idea this film was being produced by Bruckheimer until now. I was really looking forward to going to see it, now I'm ambivalent.

Wasn't it Jesus who said: "that he who is without sin should throw the first stone." So said the Clinton defenders as well.

I think I understand what stimulate was trying to say, but I agree he botched it up pretty bad. This story is about the events that ocurred in Somilia and not any events that occurred afterwards.
The piece of $hit was convicted of rape and is being punished, but it doesn't change what occurred that day.
Should the film place a note at the end of the film to explain what happen to one man after the battle. Why bother, in American is took less than a week for most people to forget what happen that day, and will probrably only take an hour or two to forget about the movie.

Wasn't it Jesus who said: "that he who is without sin should throw the first stone." Well, I am entirely sinless when it comes to kiddie diddling.
As a former Ranger and a famous one at that, he had a duty to not bring dishonor on his service through his actions.
I've got a pretty good arm too. I'll chuck some granite into his noggin.

Probably found some shady recruiter to put him in...happens all the time. Hubby's on recruiting duty now and I hear all the crazy stories. Recruiting is the Army's dirty little secret. Hubby had some fellow recruiters try to get him to do a police check on a guy (with rape charges, no less) and they also called hubby's former station commander to do the same. Fortunately, hubby's former station commander realized that they were trying to put the guy in and leave his police checks out of the enlistment paperwork.
Unfortunately, like I said, recruiting is a dirty business. There are the honest ones who try to do their jobs and then there are the ones with absolutely no morals who do anything to put someone in so they can get their recruiter ring (a recruiter gets points based on the quality of the person they put in and they get awards based on the accumulation of points...the ring is the highest award). Then there are the recruiters who do anything to put someone in so they can get the leadership off their backs because they get hounded to show some numbers.
I remember when Stebbins got busted for what he did because we were still at Benning at the time. If I'm not mistaken (and this is even more disgusting), it was his stepdaughter he molested and raped. So, I understand completely why his ex-wife is so "embittered".

Janet Wray, a spokeswoman for Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas, confirmed yesterday: "We have a John Stebbins here. He arrived on June 9 last year and is serving a 30-year sentence for sodomy with a child under 12 and rape." Under 12? Holy cow!
Well, that's a movie I won't see.

Wasn't it Jesus who said: "that he who is without sin should throw the first stone."You can't see me, but my eyes are rolling.
Tell me, stim, what particular sin was Jesus addressing in that passage?
Don't chicken out.
