The Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans to supply potassium iodide pills to any state that wants them.

The specter of such a strike has prompted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to take a step many advocates have been demanding for years: supplying potassium iodide pills to people at risk of radiation exposure.

NRC chairman Richard Meserve says giving people KI could create a false sense of security.

"The more effective action would be to evacuate people

He's kidding , right ?

Since Palo Verde is upwind (westerly winds) from Phoenix you are at risk of fallout from a radioactive cloud.

I guess that there is no chance that those of us who took the precaution of stocking some of this stuff after 9/11 will be reimbursed by Big Brother. The bureaucracy is SO slow!

It will be up to each state to decide whether to take the pills and how to get the drug to its citizens, an NRC spokesman said.

Translation: "It is up to idiots in charge of poorly run states to deny the need for such medication and it is up to intelligent persons in charge of other states to opt in favor of distributing this medication. Citizens will have absolutely no say in the amount of protection they receive. The only thing a citizen will be able to do in relation to this issue is to either envy those states that take action, pity those states that do not, or die."

God save us from the experts of the world.

My sis and brother-in-law work at Palo Verde. They live about 4 miles (downwind) from the site. I also lived with them several months ago. The reactor containment domes are clearly visible from their home.

When I lived there I could not help but get a chill whenever I viewed that site out my bedroom window. I was (and am) most concerned that Palo Verde is likely at the top of someone's list as a prime infrastructure target because it is the largest reactor site in the States. One burst gets three reactors. I surmise that an attack might be very economical from a terrorist's perspective.

Four miles does not give one much time to bug-out but sis does have everything organized, packed and secured in the pickup...just-in-case.

If you're aglowin' ya better get agoin'.

Hard to say. Supposedly a Chernobyl-type accident is unlikely here due to a more secure plant design. But if you want to sleep restless tonight, do some research on the huge area of radiation dispersal from the Chernobyl accident - and its effects on people's health.

If you want to think conservatively (as I do), consider that there may be very few places in the country where you can be almost 100% sure you're safe from ANY potential nuclear plant incident (think SW Idaho and parts of the West Coast).

East of a power plant is not good if there should be a large radiation dispersal there, since prevailing winds tend to blow eastish.

The eastern half of the country contains the vast majority of our nuclear power plants.

KI is of some use, but since there's no amount of radiation that doesn't do at least some damage to your body, the only GOOD solution when it comes to radiation is to get the hell out of the way. That is, unless you have a truly well-built, well-supplied fallout shelter which you could stay comfortably in for as long as it took...

It's partly because of nuclear issues that I started a small alert-each-other ring a couple of weeks ago. About a dozen people joined before Jim Robinson freepmailed me asking that I not recruit any more, and deleted the info thread. I don't really know why he did this, other than his statement that he didn't want FR used for gathering personal information. Which is certainly fair enough. Unfortunately, I had freepmailed him some 3 weeks earlier asking his input on the idea, but didn't hear anything back from him until after I'd put many, many hours indeed into the project.

The alert network is currently minimally functional (barely), though it hasn't been tested. I intend to take the basic thing to a separate web site. And I've been approached by another freeper about building some version of the idea through local FR chapters. That's likely to happen in the future, when I get "a round tuit".

Anyway, for more general info on nuclear issues, see my profile page, since there's a link to an article I wrote after researching some of the nuclear safety/ self-defense issues.

What % of nuclear power plant workers get cancer and how does that compare with the general population. I don't like the anti nuclear nutcases all electricity and heat should be produced with Nuclear( oil should be saved for cars solar can be used if it becomes feasible).

If you think supplies are short now, just wait until after the first nuclear event happens. Whether it happens in India or Indianapolis, you won't be able to find KI for any amount of money in time to do any good. Now is definitely the time to buy.
