(20:15) Jewish Agency braces for aliya from Argentina

Jewish Agency offices in Argentina are on a high state of "aliya alert" in response to the economic crisis gripping the country.
The agency is bracing for the possibility of a wave of immigration from the 200,000 Jews who live in Argentina, Jewish Agency spokesman Yehuda Weinraub said today.
Widespread protests and looting continued to rage today, with at least 16 people reported killed in the past two days.
Jewish Agency offices in Argentina are staying open until midnight to cope with increased numbers of Argentinian Jews making inquiries, Weinraub said. He did not rule out the possibility of an air lift to Israel if needed.
Meanwhile, Jewish Agency Chairman Sallai Meridor, anticipating a dramatic increase in aliya from Argentina, called upon the government to approve a Jewish Agency program earmarking special assistance to immigrants from Argentina.

By the way, this is the real reason why the world supports the existance of the state of Israel. What if the mob turns its anger at the Jews who live there?
This problem is on the hands of the political leaders. They promise the world to promote their careers!
P.S. Does it sound a little like the Clinton administration?

on another note: This is a part of the Middle East equation that I bet nobody has thought through. How will the intoduction of so many more Jews into Israel effect the Israel vs. Palistine quagmire?

By 2025, Jews will be in a minority over there.

It sounds to me like some charity or government agency in Israel tries to exploit the situation to raise money --- just like our charities and politicians do. What's anti-Semitic if you say so?

There are many many jewish people in Argentina.....when fleeing Europe oftentimes Argentina was the only open door.

They don't call Israel the Jewish State for nothing. It was created as a safe haven for Jews should they become troubled in any other country or region like what happend in WWII during the Holocaust.

Argentines of Italian and Spanish ancestry have been lining up for visas to their old homelands for many months now. This is just part of that pattern.

I don't think things will get so bad that an appreciable number of Jews will leave Argentina for Israel. A lot more people have died in Israel in the last 18 months from political violence than in Argentina.
