White House on Islam -- Simple Tolerance or Outright Endorsement?
Agape Press ^ | 12/20/01 | Bill Fancher and Rusty Pugh

A pro-family leader in Virginia says President Bush is making a terrible mistake by "rolling out the red carpet" for Islam.

The recent videotape of Osama bin Laden bolsters the claims by terrorists that the attacks on the U.S. were part of a religious war. Yet President Bush maintains America's response is against Islamic radicals and not the religion itself. Presidential advisor Tim Goeglein recently re-emphasized that fact to reporters, saying "this is not a war of religions, but rather a war against either terrorists themselves or those countries or individuals who harbor terrorism."

The Administration still maintains small radical groups are trying to hijack the Islamic religion, but critics say the radical element is more dominant in that religion than the White House is willing to admit. And to many Christians, the President's actions and statements since September 11 regarding Islam have crossed the line from simple tolerance, a Christian virtue, to outright endorsement.

Joe Glover of the Virginia-based Family Policy Network says Christians are becoming increasingly unhappy with Bush's actions -- especially his hosting of a Ramadan dinner at the White House. The pro-family leader says there is a critical distinction between "rolling out the red carpet" for Muslims and doing the same for Islam.

"The President should protect religious freedom for people of all faiths. What he should not do, especially as a self-proclaimed born-again Christian, is host a Muslim Ramadan service in the White House," Glover says. "The President should protect civil rights of all people, including Muslims. But he shouldn't [inaccurately] characterize the teachings of Islam, which directs its faithful followers to kill 'infidels', by calling it a religion that teaches peace."

Glover believes Bush is making a big mistake by going out of his way to honor what Glover says is a false religion. "There is something very ... disturbing, especially about an evangelical Christian in the White House, embracing Islam, which is a belief system that obviously is against the will of God," he says. According to Glover, the President's endorsement of a false religion will further alienate Christians and hurt him severely in the 2004 election.

As well, many Christians are disappointed with the reaction of some evangelical leaders -- such as Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberties Commission. Land is quoted as saying he had "no problem with the Ramadan dinner" and describing Islam as "one of the great religions of the world."

Remember the old adage, "Keep your friends close by and but keep your enemies even closer."?

Seems to me too many people are too worried about the philosophical underpinnings of these terrorists. I could care less if they're Muslim or Zorastrians or Baptists. Its not what they think, or say they think, that counts its what they do.

I subscribe to the ancient philosophy of "you hit me, I destroy you". It seems to have worked pretty well throughout history.

This is strictly politics, GWB is simply trying to keep it from escalating into a real Religious war. Which is exactly what that B@stard Bin Laden & his flunkies want.

I view this as another attempt by certain Christian sects here on FR and at large to paint Islam and ALL Muslims as evil, despicable and vile. The second part of its agenda is to attack George Bush as a non Christian because he doesn't march in lockstep with the beliefs of those whom I call the religiously intolerant sect of Born again Christians.

With Christmas a few days away, I find things like this to be deeply saddening. We worship a God who is loving, caring, compassionate and forgiving but some people in this forum can't/won't give us a respite from their intolerance for even a few days so we can celebrate the birth of Christ with some calm and civility. Is that too much to pray for? Doesn't seem like a outrageous request to me.

Muslims are more likely to vote Republican than Jews (who went 85% for Gore and 78% for Clinton). They are also growing faster. Do the math.

Yeah, but I want to see this Grover guy dance while holding a rattlesnake over his head before I'm convinced he's a true Christian.

And feel free to stop by the Salt house during the holidays - you can guzzle all the Chlorox you want!

Islam is evil, despicable and vile. The thing is, many Muslims, like many Christians, have not bothered to read the the Koran, so they don't know all that is contained. I was guilty of this myself for a very long time. I professed to being a christian, yet outside of a few Bible verses and a couple of stories, was ignorant of its' teaching.

I won't attack Bush on his beliefs (yet). I know it is a hard balancing act he is trying to perform at this point...

I agree that we worship a God who is loving, caring, compassionate and forgiving, but Christ told us that even so, there will come a judgement day, and that ONLY through Him will we find the Father.

My numbers come from a pollster from the Florida GOP.

Yehuda, I bear no ill will to any of my Jewish or Muslim fellow citizens. One thing my Jewish neighbors will have to face, however, is that Muslim influence on our Foreign policy will grow, particularly since most muslims are no lnger poor black converts in the inner city. The children of Pakistani shopkeepers and Egyptian gas station managers are now going to college and entering the professions. It is only a matter of time until they will begin to influence policy.

As for myself, I have always supported Israel's right to exist and to defend itself from enemies. Nevertheless, we must take into account that Muslims will become a significant political block, particularly in states like Michigan and New Jersey (although I expect the latter to remain in Dem hands for entirely different reasons).

"Muslims are more likely to vote Republican than Jews (who went 85% for Gore and 78% for Clinton). They are also growing faster. Do the math."

So they can kill 3,000 Americans as long as they vote Republican?

Muslims are also more likely to vote Republican than Catholics. But Catholics and Jews don't fly planes into tall buildings. So what do you think, would this country be better off with 30 million more Catholics or Jews, or 30 million more Muslims?

Gee, we wouldn't want to offend your sensibilities by conveying an observation and opinion that represents many opinions across America now, would we?

If you don't like it, put some ice on it.
