Did you ever think that maybe we don't want to control Afghanistan? Buying oil from Russia puts OPEC in check, and the terrorists can no longer find refuge. Where's the downside? Isn't this a war which has "global" support? If so, why wouldn't Russia gain any benefits? Hell, it's their neighbor! Bush/Putin double-teaming Afghanistan in 90 days seems like a major coop to me.
No, wait, I can't think that way. It would go against the Cold War illogic of the past 50 years...
No victory yet, there be Islamics in the Sub-Continent.

Good job!
Check out Khodorkovsky biography, he was a kommie when it was benefitial. But who cares, right?

Nuts. Anyone who thinks that the US could profit by going in and taking over Afghanistan is completely off his rocker. The place is nothing but a huge can of worms.

Vlad is in the right place, in the right time.

Do you know the famous Stalin's phrase, that he uttered at some public gathering, during purges and famine and cheery movies made about merry kolkhozniks, "We live better and merrier than before"?

Assume Ignatious' whole premise is based on the yet to be built trans Asian pipeline to the Indian Ocean.
Anyone who thinks that US interests won't have their fingers up the fanny of that golden goose has got to be naive.

Thanks.
Well, our Famous Linguist had a famous phrase on every day of the calendar. I missed this one.

That too, but there is a lot of rumors about pipes going in west-east, east-west directions.

"...In spring 1995 one of our Russian special services gave the Russian media a transcript of radio intercepts of conversations between Dudayev and Udugov, probably to show that the regime in Chechnya is truly a gangster regime. The effect was staggeringly negative. First, this had absolutely no effect on the pro-Dudayev media. And second, the United States sent special equipment to the bandits in Chechnya via the territory of Germany and Turkey and for a long time this prevented our special services from monitoring the gunmen's talks...."We live more better and more merrier...

"You can't take the Afghanistan model and immediately apply it to Iraq," he said. With a straight face, I'm sure!
