THE ENERGY CRUNCH : State's deregulation folly is no laughing matter (California)

It was supposed to save money.

Now that California has burned billions of dollars to keep the lights on over the past 18 months, it seems absurd. The entire impetus for the state's grand experiment with electricity deregulation was to cut costs -- for everyone from manufacturers to consumers to utilities to power generators.

"[Steve] Peace (D-El Cajon), such a policy wonk that he makes Al Gore look like Dan Quayle, plunged enthusiastically into the minutiae; his marathon late-night sessions to thrash out arcane details became known as the "Steve Peace Death March."

This should serve as a clear message as to the damage that so-called "policy wonks" are capable of.

"Policy wonkism" is all about rigid government control of individual and business activity. It is also, usually, about consummate failure.

There is nothing attractive, charming or admirable about "policy wonkism" -- despite the liberal media's infatuation with the type.

"Policy wonks" are dangerous to the political and economic health of the nation and its markets.

Deregulation is being misrepresented in this case. Partial deregulation would be a better term. Deregulating wholesale prices while regulating consumer prices below cost guaranteed the failure of local power companies and throwing the California public to the bids of outside power suppliers.

The enviromental wackos contributed by discouraging new facilities. Illegal immigrants contributed to the problem by floodimg the state with more users than anticipated.

"Say it ain't so! ............. "

This whole thing reminds me of the classic saying of Will Rogers... "It ain't what'cha don't know, that hurts ya... It's what'cha know, that ain't so!"

meenie has it right and the writers deliberately ignore the key element in their "perfect storm" scenario. The ass-in-nine panic over nuclear along with the obstructionism of Hydro by the EnvironMentalCase Communitysts that lead up to this in the 70's & 80's destroyed any chance of this "restructuring!"

The Envirals knew it would happen and welcomed it, in fact signed on to it, knowing what a great object lesson it would be in the futility of the free market and the wisdom of collective ownership/control of the means of production, which is clearly SOCIALISM!!! They love public utilities, as does Robert357.
