Council chastises judges, senators
News Keywords: Courts, Family Research Council, Court Jester Awards
Source: The Washington Times
Published: June 16, 1999 (Matthew A. Rarey)"The Family Research Council issued its third annual Court Jester Awards yesterday to judges it says put personal agendas over constitutional principles. Top honors went to the senators who acquitted President Clinton at his impeachment trial. "Today, we're celebrating those judges who are doing for our country what the Three Stooges did for cinema," said Hadley Arkes, a law professor at Amherst College. Democratic Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, Robert S. Byrd of West Virginia and Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York shared the "Impeachment Jester Award." "Although they knew Clinton broke laws and deserved to be removed," Mr. ..."

Intellectual Void at the heart of Conservatism

They are right to have made the defence of the independent nation state part of their platform. But opposition to the euro is not enough. Nor are new faces. Experienced politicians such as Peter Lilley may have had to make way for fresh blood. But the debate started by Lilley in his April 20 speech needs to continue. He was ..."

FUTURE FORCES: TEN TRENDS THAT WILL SHAPE AMERICAN POLITICS AND POLICIES IN 2000 AND BEYOND
Opinion
Source: Heritage Foundation
Published: June 15, 1999 (DONALD LAMBRO)" HERITAGE FOUNDATION LECTURE held on May 5, 1999 Forecasting the future is a risky business at best, whether it's how high the Dow, which party will win the White House or take control of Congress in 2000, or the length of women's hemlines (which some soothsayers think has a lot to do with the Dow). In any event, in today's modem-paced, speed-of-light, nanosecond world, this year's forecasts could be next year's stupidities. I suppose we're driven to make predictions, if only to be able to smugly tell the many skeptics among us, "See? I told you so." Still, some ..."

Impeachment's Toxicity

Ken Starr is going to release a final report clearing the air about the impeachment brouhaha and whatever else he deems appropriate. Hillary Clinton, the lifelong Yankees fan who spent the last twenty years publicly cheering the Chicago Cubs for cover, is going to run for the Senate in New York. Al Gore is reportedly going to start a “conversation” with the American people tomorrow night in an ABC interview. In this conversation Al Gore is going to establish his independence from the president’s character problems. One way to ..."

Bush Blows It Big Time! He's Soft On Abortion!
Opinion
Published: 6/14"George W. Bush made a huge mistake today. If he is elected he promised that no Supreme Court Judge will be put through an abortion litmus test. Thus, Bush is already backing down from a hard stance on the abortion. The Bush boys could learn a lot from a previous president named Ronaldous Magnus. He was kind, but unwavering in his Conservatism. A strong man who strongly objected to abortion. But, because of his kindness and openness, he inspired the American public to trust him deeply. Conservatives Gain in Luxembourg
News
Source: AP Wire
Published: June 14, 1999"Conservatives Gain in Luxembourg LUXEMBOURG (AP) -- The government of Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker resigned Monday, a day after voters turned away from his center-left coalition and made a conservative party the second biggest force in parliament. Results of elections for the 60-member assembly gave Juncker's Christian Democrats 19 seats and the Socialists of Foreign Minister Jacques Poos 13 seats, down two and four seats respectively. Juncker is expected to form the next government with the conservative Democratic Party, which won 15 seats, a gain of three. Another winner was the ADR, a party born of dissatisfaction with recent pension ..."

How to Fight Gun Control
Opinion Keywords: gun control
(Naspino)"The concept of gun control, leading to gun collection is very simple to me. Disregarding the second Ammendment and what it was designed to do, guns are our only way of protecting our person. I'm sure Rosie's set is protected by armed guards, I'm sure Clinton is protected 24 hours a day by armed secret service. In fact I'm sure nearly all proponents of "gun control" are protected by someone other than policemen. So its very simple, we create a signature list of people willing to give up their guns if: 1) The secret service is disbanded. If Bill Clinton ..."

Published: May 15, 1999 (Gilbert Taylor )"Quayle's two books (Standing Firm, 1994, and The American Family, with Diane Medved, 1996) have reminded conservative circles of his availability for a presidential run. The ridicule he continues to attract from liberal corners of the media (cartoonist Gary Trudeau is already pounding on him) certainly does him no damage in the Republican Party. Still, he seems sensitive and annoyed by the digs, and frequently in this book retorts to what he calls the "New Aristocracy" of the media--though the conservative complaint of liberal bias is as old as Spiro Agnew's alliterative attack on the "nattering nabobs of negativism." "...The battle between liberals and most conservatives is a feud between rival members of the same philosophic family: statism. Both agree that your life, money and property are not yours (this agreement is implicit, in most cases)—and these ideas are the essence of statism. And when it comes to guns, both have sanctioned the notion that guns must be regulated and background checks for buyers of guns is proper. Liberal statists are more consistent in their espousal of these ideas. Conservative statists are the more inconsistent. Under pressure from liberals, and their own inconsistencies, conservatives slowly become more and more liberal as they become more consistently statist. This is why most of today’s conservative Republicans are now as liberal, or more liberal, than the liberals of the 60’s..."

If African Americans can be convinced that conservatives will stand up for them -- and principle -- against a seemingly invasive government, perhaps enough trust will develop that will allow Republicans to get their vote. Otherwise, it will be a long time before a significant number of blacks embrace this political philosophy. And in standing for the minority community, conservatives and Republicans can stand for all Americans.

As an organization, the Moral Majority came to an end several years ago when Rev. Jerry Falwell, its president, disbanded it. As a political approach and aspiration, however, it did not give up the ghost until a few weeks ago, when Paul Weyrich, who coined its name and helped formulate its strategy, confessed publicly that it had all been for naught.

What it means to be a conservative

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30,1998 Steve Farrell
William F. Buckley Jr. in his 1959 work, Up From Liberalism,
brought home the point. "Modern realities," do not invalidate
conservative essentials -- essentials such as "freedom,
individuality, the sense of community, the sanctity of the
family, the supremacy of the conscience, the spiritual view of
life." Further, the social and political vortex (of liberalism),
which we had irresistibly been drawn into, was not due to the
"inadaptability" of conservative fundamentals, but the failure
of conservatives to apply them.

"...Statists are most prominent and numerous among liberals, but there are statists in some conservative camps. There are conservatives who wish to limit your freedom in so-called "social" areas, such as freedom of speech and other areas, but wish to have liberty in economic exchange (some even wish to limit your economic freedom and, as such, are essentially no different from liberals). They cannot have it both ways. As you will see, their inconsistencies have undermined the future of freedom. There are conservatives who, in their heart of hearts, are basically for freedom, but unwittingly further the cause of statism in this country through their concessions and compromises on fundamental principles, apparently not understanding what they have conceded. Once they understand and stand consistently on the side of freedom, they will win the battle..."

The New York Times
10/30/97 Editorial
Just as Ronald Reagan tried to make improved relations
with the Soviet Union the foreign policy centerpiece of
his second term, Bill Clinton now looks to China for his
place in the diplomatic history books. This week's visit of
President Jiang Zemin has shown the difficulty of trying to
construct a stable relationship with China. Mr. Clinton, after
several false starts in his first term, has devised a sound
China policy that emphasizes engagement rather than
estrangement. The question now and in the months ahead is
how effectively Mr. Clinton handles the many elements of
that policy, from defending human rights to enhancing trade.
