President Gore waits in the wings

Evening Standard: (UK)

When Bill Clinton chose the strait-laced Senator Al Gore as his running mate in 1992, he proclaimed it a match made in political heaven, and as a mere afterthought remarked that Gore "was ready to be Presid

Slimey Oozing Desperation: 'The Salon Report on Kenneth Starr'
-
Salon Magazine
9/10/98 David Talbot
There is much we now know about our 42nd president, William Jefferson
Clinton. We know about his sexual proclivities and fantasies, his taste
in women, his favorite erotic poetry, the size and topography of his
reproductive organ and yes, his instinct to dissemble when his secret
passions are revealed. Some of the endless stream of fact and rumor
about the president's private life is of public relevance. Most,
however, is not. And, as New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis observed
on Tuesday, the urge to empty this president's -- or any president's --
inner life of all its contents is morbid and Orwellian. As Lewis noted,
"Privacy is an essential ingredient of civilized human existence," a
precious ingredient that has been steadily chipped away in modern Americ
an society.

Sept 10, 1998 By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in Washington
Lying under oath is the minimum. But I suspect that establishing
perjury is just a starter, a necessary building block in a broader case
of witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Mr Starr has
gathered evidence indicating that Mr Clinton has used the office of
the presidency, its powers of patronage and suasion, to obstruct a
civil lawsuit in which he was the defendant, and then compounded
the offence with a protracted cover-up. This is what will be
delivered to the House Judiciary Committee, I believe, along with a
narrative describing pathological behaviour by the President. I am
told there may be 12 criminal counts.

"British readers might be forgiven for supposing that every American
president is allocated his own special prosecutor on the day of
inauguration. In fact, there is an elaborate choreography behind the
appointment of an independent counsel. Suspicion of a crime is not
enough. For a scandal to get traction there must be a barrage of
allegations by the media, and a backstage campaign by the staff of
the key congressional committees on Capitol Hill. Working together,
these two forces are deadly. But Mr Clinton had little to fear in
1992. When he arrived in Washington, both pincers were safely in
the hands of the Democratic establishment.

-
Reuters
Wednesday September 9 5:17 PM EDT Arshad Mohammed
Speaking in Florida hours before prosecutor Kenneth Starr sent Congress his report on the Lewinsky affair, he asked for forgiveness and appealed for reconciliation.
``I let my family down and I let this country down, but I am trying to make it right,'' Clinton said at a fund-raising lunch in Orlando. ``I am determined never to let anything like that happen again.''
``I ask you for your understanding, for your forgiveness on this journey we are on. I hope this will be a time of reconciliation and healing,'' he added.
Clinton's remarks were interrupted by applause from the audience of Democratic donors, who also gave him a standing ovation when he concluded his speech.

The Americans badly needed a face-saver, as did Yeltsin, to salvage the Moscow summit. Washington thus picked on India, and managed to cajole Yeltsin to persuade India and Pakistan to 'give up t

Has it really come to this: our Commander-in-Chief is fighting a lonely battle for the right to trash
marriage, humiliate his family, embarrass those drawn to public service, defile the office of the
Presidency, and get away with it?
To President Clinton, I would say . . . ride over to Arlington Cemetery, walk around on that holy
real estate, read the stones, and then consider the line whispered at the end of Saving Private
Ryan: "Earn this." Try to understand, at fifty-two, what my Dad knew at twenty: your personal life
is not the issue here. Resign the office, make things right with your wife and daughter and the
nation, get outta town; just go away. But, please, spare us any further shame.

North Texas Freeper 9/19/98 Meeting - REPOST RE CHANGE IN SITE & TIME
-
n/a
Sept 9, 1998 Self
Due to concerns about the political affiliation of the Joe's Crab Shack chain owners, we arranged to hold the 9/1/9/98 North Texas Freepers meeting at a different site. The new site is Pappadeaux Restaurant, at
2121 Airport Freeway (Highway 183) and Central Drive, in Bedford. This is about 5 miles west of the south entrance to DFW airport, just past the Highway 121 turnoff if you're traveling west on Highway 183.
We also changed the time. It will start at 2:30 p.m. (vs. 3:00 p.m. as first scheduled). But, as we don't have a formal agenda, moderately late arrivals will be OK. Reservations are for 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. (more info follows)

-
The New York Times
September 9, 1998 Moreen Dowd
As the President smiled and waved behind the tinted windshield, he saw a man holding a sign, above his 19-month-old daughter in a stroller, that read, "Mr. President, Stay Away From Our Daughters." He
saw a man, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth, holding a sign that read: "Get Lost." He saw a small group of protesters booing and holding a 10-foot banner that read, "Time to Impeach."
What he didn't witness was even worse. Before the President sped past, a Secret Service agent approached a group of children, after one child had dropped a pencil on the gravel, and asked if they were picking up rocks to throw at the motorcade.
A group of four Catholic schoolgirls from nearby St. Bernadette's, thrilled to see the President, stationed themselves in the best vantage point -- under the "Time to Impeach" sign.
One of them, Victoria Chapa, 10, asked giddily, "Is Monica Lewinsky going to come by?"

There's more slime flowing from the White House than on the kids' TV

BOXER RIPS PRESIDENT'S BEHAVIOR AS 'IMMORAL'
-

Sen. Barbara Boxer yesterday joined a growing chorus of Senate Democrats criticizing...Clinton about the White House sex-and-lies scandal, calling his behavior
"immoral" and "indefensible."...Noting that the president himself had agreed with those criticisms,..."...he should have taken responsibility much earlier," said Mrs. Boxer, whose daughter is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton's younger brother....Her comm
ents came as more of her Democratic colleagues began attacking the president. Sen. Ernest F. Hollings, South Carolina Democrat, yesterday said "We're fed up" with "the dishonesty of the president."...Known in California for her attacks on Supreme Court Ju
stice Clarence Thomas and then-Sen. Bob Packwood when they were accused of sexual harassment, Mrs. Boxer has seen the White House scandal become a key issue in her re-election campaign...Republican challenger Matt Fong said to Mrs. Boxer, "Barbara, your s

Why did President Clinton wear that necktie? I'm referring to the $100 silk Zegna
in audacious gold-and-navy patterns that Monica gave him with the remark, "When
I see you wearing this tie, I'll know I'm close to your heart." Clinton donned it for a
gun-ban rally in the Rose Garden the very morning Monica was testifying before
the grand jury. The New York Times suspected that it was "a plea for solidarity,"
while Newsday thought it was a White House threat to Lewinsky "that she was
being watched." ...
Could
it be? What if it wasn't just meaningless sex by a groupie eager to try out her
presidential kneepads? What if Bill and Monica were actually in love?

written fast, it will also be read fast -- and that's all to the good, for the argument its author makes is one America needs to hear
right away.

BILL CLINTON'S QUIZ SHOW; The Steep Decline of Liberal Moralism
-
The Weekly Standard
September 7, 1998 Noemie Emery
Richard Goodwin, a liberal light little seen since the Johnson era, emerged recently to lecture us about sex and mendacity,
defending President Clinton from the sex-crazed hordes bearing down on him. Sex, he told us in a Los Angeles Times op-ed
piece, is never an issue, and lies are lies only sometimes, depending on who tells them and what they are about. Lies told to
divert, obstruct, subvert, or otherwise interfere with the Starr investigation or the Paula Jones lawsuit are completely legitimate.
Why? These case have "nothing to do with politics," Goodwin said, "nothing to do with the public issues that influence our
well-being as citizens . . . I myself enjoy reading about sex, all kinds of sex. But I do not disguise my purely prurient interests
with the claim that some important public interest is involved."
But Goodwin and his kind were not always so forgiving about lies in high places, or about lying in general.

The WISH list, the leading organization
supporting pro-choice Republican women officeholders, today urged President Clinton to
resign from office.....WISH president Candy Straight said that Clinton's recent confession of sexual relations
with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky was an abuse of power in the workplace.
Compounding his poor judgment, the President's deliberate lie and his elaborate efforts to
cover up his actions indicate an untrustworthy individual and one who believes he is above
reproach.

Is The White House Manipulating The Markets?
-
Vanity by IncPen
8/8/98 Why Me, Of Course
The day after the March 1997 crash, traders at the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) and elsewhere were scratching their heads... What should have been a down opening was, an hour or so into the session, an up
trend, and a big one at that. S$P futures were leading the way, against all common sense.... One trader was quoted at the time as saying, "The only entity with that kind of heft is the Federal Government."
Scant attention was paid at the time of the crash to Secretary Rubin's hasty arrival at the White House basement "War Room" where the "Crash Protection Team" toiled.
Recent speculation about a "Wag the Dog" scenario has left out a seemingly obvious constituency that depends upon Bill Clinton's survival: Big Money on Wall Street.Suppose the war the President started used your 401k as ammunition?

Faced with the potential havoc of the millennium bug, the Canadian military is preparing for the worst under a plan it has dubbed Operation Abacus.
The plan would see the Canadian Forces pre-positioning emergency equipment and supplies as 2000 approaches, in case computers crash. It also calls on the military to provide electrical power if cities black out and support to police if needed.

The scandal of the Star City mansions and NASA's non-response to it perfectly
characterize the U.S.-Russian space partnership. From the beginning, the program has
stumbled over the issue of money--how much the Russians will get, where (and to
whom) it will go, and how much will actually be spent on the promised services. By
1998, the five-year-old partnership had seen the transfer of more than $2 billion of
American money (some from NASA but most from commercial enterprises) into the
Russian aerospace industry, where most of it vanished utterly without a trace.

In political terms, she's been described as a domineering woman; ruthless, autocratic, hot-blooded and, at times, impulsive. Other pundits and observers have called her quick to temper with a changeable mood
that often irritated her male contemporaries. She was the dominant partner in a marriage of convenience, although very much the antithesis of her husband. Much has been written of her haughty manner and how she used her position to promote her favorites
, and to vilify those outside her party. We know now that, sadly, she never quite understood the fears and prejudices of her husband's political enemies, believing instead that her husband's ills were the work of a vast and never-ending conspiracy. She
loved power for power's sake and exploited her position to promote her own agenda in her husband's name.

Having laid out (some of) the reasons Clinton cannot any more exercise leadership, Lieberman proceeded to dismiss calls for resignation on the grounds that we need his leadership.
No doubt it is prudent for Sen. Lieberman to keep his options open. We'll spare the accolades.
His speech, along with those of Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Bob Kerrey, should at least close off the White House's main line of defense, i.e., its attack on Kenneth Starr. Whatever his faults, the trio said, the blame for this situation rests on Clinton
alone.

The so called polls have been showing us for some time that Americans really don’t consider Clinton’s morals to be a major issue and it now appears that this message is now being sent by some members of a pr

-

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998 Charlie Cook
While Congress awaits Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr's report, and more concrete indications of the Monica Lewinsky affair's impact on the mid-term elections, there have been some
important developments in the 2000 presidential election campaign. For better or worse, the next presidential campaign begins on Nov. 4, the day after the forthcoming mid-term election. The most important developments relate to Vice President Gore, the fr
ontrunner for the Democratic presidential nod. Attorney General Reno's decision last week to begin a 90-day inquiry that could lead to the appointment of an independent counsel was based on alleged campaign fundraising abuses involving the vice president
and could undermine Gore's frontrunning status.

What few people believed even weeks ago -- that a president could face impeachment because of a sex scandal -- now seems probable. And, ironically, it's the Democrats who will try to keep the focus nar
rowly on the Lewinsky matter. Even those Democrats willing to dump Clinton overboard aren't anxious to have an impeachment investigation look too closely at whether Chinese communists helped finance the president's re-election or whether administration an
d Democrat Party officials were trading national security secrets and policy favors for campaign cash. Because they feared any such conclusions would tarnish the whole Democrat Party, congressional Democrats hued to a strictly partisan defensive line duri
ng earlier congressional investigations into these matters. Now, it would be difficult to change course.

Sept 4 98 ARIEH O'SULLIVAN
President Jiang Zemin of China was meeting with an important guest in a
pond-side pagoda-style house Wednesday morning.
The head of the Communist Party and leader of over 1.3 billion people was
supposed to be paying his first visit to the flood-stricken Hobei Province, but
delayed his trip so he could meet this man, who is not even a head of state.
The man was former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger.
"He's a Jew. He's very smart," said a senior Chinese official.
A short while later, another Jew, Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai, had an
audience with Jiang.
The scheduled 30-minute meeting began with the traditional washing of hands
and warm cloths and then lasted over an hour-and-a-half.
"He spoke warmly of Jews. He mentioned [Karl] Marx and [Albert] Einstein,
and he has a great appreciation for Jewish ingenuity," said Israeli
Ambassador to China Ora Namir. "He even mentioned the drip-irrigation
system we developed."

High Job Approval? The Truth May Be Polls Apart
-
Wall Street Journal
Sept 8 1998 John Fund
After seven months of repeating a mantra about the president's job approval
ratings, networks have now suddenly taken to reporting a second set of
numbers: his tumbling personal approval and credibility ratings. "He may
have been propped up by this daily avalanche of favorable job approval
numbers," says Everett Carll Ladd, president of the Roper Center for Public
Opinion Research. "But there was always a richer vein of data showing a
weaker position."

HILL REPUBLICANS HUDDLE FOR CONSENSUS ON TAX CUT
-
The Washington Times http://www.washtimes.com/
5am -- September 8, 1998 BY JOHN GODFREY THE WASHINGTON TIMES
House and Senate Republican leaders will meet this week to decide whether the House should renew its push for tax cuts, and if so, to determine the amount, accord
ing to a senior congressional aide....The aide said most are "leaning" toward tax relief, but to set the ball in motion, the leadership in both chambers must agree....Earlier this year, House Republicans had pushed tax cuts of up to $90 billion over five
years. In the wake of projections of $1.5 trillion in budget surpluses over the next decade, House Budget Committee Chairman John R. Kasich, Ohio Republican, and House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Georgia Republican, championed a $750 billion tax cut over 10 ye
ars....Since then, tax-cut advocates in the House and Senate have said more realistic numbers range from $50 billion to $70 billion, but the Senate may reject even that, arguing that any tax breaks would be granted from Social Security trust fund surpluse

BAPTIST BOSS: BAD BOY BILL SHOULD QUIT
-
New York Post http://www.nypostonline.com/
September 8, 1998 BY VINCENT MORRIS AND WILLIAM NEUMAN
The leader of the Southern Baptist Convention - Bill Clinton's denomination - says the president should resign over his affair with Monica Lewinsky before he corrupts the nati
on's youth....The Rev. Paige Patterson, a frequent critic of Clinton, used his Sunday sermon, in North Carolina, to blast the president and urge Americans not to support Clinton ...This bespeaks a certain enthrallment with materialism, which is exactly wh
at caused the demise of Rome, said Patterson, whose convention represents 15.6 million people - the largest Protestant denomination in the country....Clinton should resign before he is instrumental in corrupting all our young people, Patterson said....The
call for Clinton's resignation comes during a stretch in which the president and his wife have skipped church three Sundays in a row....the Clintons haven't publicly worshipped since Aug. 16 - the day before the president testified to the Sexgate grand j
ury and later publicly admitted lying to cover up his affair with Lewinsky....

AP-Clinton Scandal May Hurt Democrats

New York Times

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic voters disheartened by President Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky and a political system ``on the brink of moral bankruptcy'' might not vote on Nov. 3, a bipartisan poll says.
That would help give Republicans the edge, especially in races for open congressional seats, says Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster who joined forces with GOP pollster Ed Goeas to release their ``Battleground 1998'' survey today.

In Bellwether District, Clues to Lewinsky's Impact
-
The New York Times
September 8, 1998 R.W. APPLE Jr.
This is precisely the kind of district that the Republicans would like to take to pad their uncomfortably narrow majority of 21 in the House of Representatives, and the Democrats need to hold onto
if they are to have a chance of winning a majority of their own.
The race here has an additional significance as well. This is also the kind of religious, straitlaced district both parties will watch to measure the import of Clinton's relationship with the former intern, Monica Lewinsky.
Thus far, there are few overt signs that the Lewinsky matter will bedevil Strickland, although there is enough unease that he and other Democrats are willing to openly scold a president of their own party before Election Day. For Educational and Discussio
n Purposes Only.
