  • Santorum Backers Look to Change Texas Primary Rules

Rick Santorum, trying to keep his presidential hopes alive despite increasingly long odds, is looking for the political equivalent of a Hail Mary pass from Texas Republicans. Santorum has noted in recent days that some Texas party activists are waging an uphill battle to change the rules of the May 29 primary so that whoever wins would get all 152 delegates up for grabs in the contest. The activists, led by Santorum supporters, say they have enough support to force an emergency meeting of the State Republican Executive Committee, though major hurdles loom beyond that. The Republican National Committee would...

Marco Rubio, Mitt Romney's highest-profile endorsement, has a message for other GOP presidential (less)hopefuls: pack it in, boys. The primary's over. Ouch. As Tina Korbe reported over on Hot Air, the Florida Senator came out strongly for Romney's chances against Barack Obama, illustrating the kind of tenacity desired of a vice presidential nominee. “I actually think we’re going to have a very good nominee. I think Mitt Romney’s going to be the next president of the United States. The U.S. Coast Guard unleashed cannon fire Thursday at a Japanese vessel set adrift by last year's tsunami, stopping the ship's long, lonely voyage across the Pacific Ocean. A Coast Guard cutter fired on the abandoned 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru in the waters of the Gulf of Alaska and more than 150 miles from land, spokesman Paul Webb said. Soon after the cannon fire started, the ship burst into flames, began to take on water and list, Chief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow said. About two hours later, the vessel hadn't sunk and the cutter resumed shelling, Lt. Veronica Colbath said. The...

The Department of Energy announced Thursday a $100,000 prize for software developers to come up with mobile applications to tell consumers how much energy they are using. But there’s already an app for that. A quick scan of the iTunes and Android markets shows nearly two dozen existing applications that accomplish the same purpose — helping users keep track of their energy consumption at home. The uMeter app, for example, allows consumers with Wi-Fi-enabled home energy meters to “manage and optimize their energy consumptions, in order to reduce their expenses and carbon footprint,” according to the description. Similarly, the Home...

Europe is scratching its head over possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court will strike down President Obama's signature legislative achievement. As the judiciary and the Obama administration trade legal barbs over the high court's authority, the idea that health care coverage, largely considered a universal right in Europe, could be deemed an affront to liberty is baffling. "The Supreme Court can legitimately return Obamacare?" asks a headline on the French news site 9 POK . The article slowly walks through the legal rationale behind the court's right to wipe away Congress's legislation. "Sans précédent, extraordinaires" reads the article. In the...

Justice Dept. responds to judicial query, defends Obama comments on high courtBy Sam Baker - 04/05/12 02:43 PM ET Tweet The Justice Department shot back Thursday against a federal court’s suggestion that President Obama doesn’t recognize the role of the judicial branch. Three judges on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Justice Department to file a three-page letter outlining its view of the courts’ powers — a response to comments in which Obama said it would be “unprecedented” for the Supreme Court to overturn his healthcare law. Obama’s remarks were “fully consistent” with well-established legal principles, the Justice...

WASHINGTON — Passover and Easter — intrinsically linked in the Jewish and Christian traditions — are being celebrated this weekend. For observant Jews, Passover commemorates the Hebrews' liberation from slavery under Egypt's Pharaoh. For faithful Christians, Easter is a celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the grave and the fulfillment of a new covenant between God and man. Biblical passages in Exodus 12, Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24 and John 20 describe these historical events and the reasons for festivities among people of faith. But this year, these holidays are a time of extraordinary anxiety for Christians and Jews...

I keep hearing statements about how expensive it is to prep. Although it is not cheap it doesn’t have to be that expensive either. You do not need to stock 20 years worth of food to be properly prepared. As a matter of fact I would advise against it. Stockpiling a large food and water supply means you have to stay put and defend it. That may not be your best option in a lot of scenarios which means you would lose that investment. Do you think you really have enough ammo to defend a 20 year food supply for...

Gov. Mark Dayton was right to veto the so-called Castle Doctrine bill, but he did it for the wrong reason. The bill, co-authored by Minnesota Sen. Gretchen Hoffman of Vergas, would have gone further than the Florida “shoot first” law now being invoked in the controversial shooting death of a black teenager. The proposed Minnesota law would not have endangered police officers, and would not have resulted in a rash of shootings. But it would have made it easier to shoot and kill someone, and the vaguely-worded bill would have made it very difficult to prosecute anyone who used deadly...

The Obama Record: Little noticed in the president's remarks attacking the Supreme Court last week were two whoppers he told about ObamaCare. Then again, since that reform was built on untruths, why should he stop now? At that press event, Obama told any justice thinking of overturning ObamaCare's central tenet that "in the absence of an individual mandate, you cannot have a mechanism to ensure that people with pre-existing conditions can actually get health care." Of course we should not be surprised at anything that comes out of his mouth, but comments this week by Barack Obama (or whatever his name is) were simply stunning. Not only were they stunning, but they were chilling. When he issued a thinly veiled threat to the Supreme Court concerning their ruling on the atrocious Obamacare legislation, we saw a brazen, boorish, wanna-be dictator showing his ugly, arrogant face. Here is part of what he said, Ultimately, I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was...

A week ago, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a black kid named Tyrone Woodfork severely beat an elderly couple, a Mr. & Mrs. Strait, who had been married for 65 years. Tyrone RAPED Mrs. Strait, and she died of injuries received at his hands. Mr. Strait served in the 101st Airborne during WWII. NO national media carried the story. Tyrone was arrested yesterday. I supposed that if Mr. Strait had shot Tyrone, the whole country would know about the story. As it is, only Mrs. Strait died, so it's not of interest to Brian Williams and the rest of the main stream...

Deficit Hawk: a slang term used for politicians that place great emphasis on keeping the federal budget under control. Liberals only use this term for politicians that want to raise taxes. Deficit Chicken Hawk: a slang term used for politicians that claim to place great emphasis on keeping the federal budget under control but when faced with making real cuts in government spending always back down. Liberals only use this term to describe anyone who won’t raise taxes. President Obama displays a special kind of shallow, transparent, political opportunism when recently talking about deficits to the writers for financial...
