  • March 2012 Jobs Report Is Worst Since October

    04/06/2012 7:33:55 PM PDT · by SeekAndFind · 5 replies
    National Review ^ | 04/06/2012 | Kevin Hassett
This was the worst jobs report since last October. The economy added 120,000 jobs in March, about half the pace of the previous three months. The futures markets are responding as if this report is extremely disappointing, but that seems like an overreaction. The fact is, the weather has been about as good as it has been in a century. Warm, dry weather in January and February meant that a statistically typical number of weather-related disruptions didn’t occur, inflating those jobs numbers. March weather was great too, but weather starts to get better that time of year anyway, so a...

The Eldorado National Forest will close 42 popular off-highway-vehicle routes that cross meadows due to a February court order, Forest Supervisor Kathy Hardy announced this week. The routes could be closed through this year's recreation season while the U.S. Forest Service conducts an environmental analysis ordered by the court. U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton said the Forest Service had failed to comply with the National Forest Management Act when it designated routes as open for motor vehicle use,

THE SEVEN WORDS FROM THE CROSS Text from the book: “Life of Christ” by Bishop Fulton Sheen Our Lord spoke seven times from the Cross; these are called His Seven Last Words. In His goodness, Our Blessed Lord left His thoughts on dying. He was representative of all humanity. In this sublime hour He called all His children to the pulpit of the Cross, and every word He said to them was set down for the purpose of an eternal publication and an undying consolation. There was never a preacher like the dying Christ; there was never a congregation like...
  • When Redemption Is Real: Chuck Colson didn’t fall from grace, he ascended to it

For the first time in 34 years, Chuck Colson won’t be in a prison for Easter. The famous Watergate figure and Christian convert usually spends the day ministering to prisoners, but is recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain. Colson, 80, is a giant of our time. He is a reminder of the true meaning of redemption, a concept that has been debased in our Tilt-a-Whirl media culture that can’t distinguish between notoriety and fame. In contemporary America, redemption begins sometime between the first check-in into rehab and the first cable-TV interview, and reaches completion when...

You know about the complaint many African Americans have about gay men and lesbians equating — in any way — their shared struggle for equal rights with the civil rights movement. Well, going hand-in-hand with that is an annoyance with the seeming one-way nature of the gay appropriation. In other words, the gays want everyone to understand their plight, but they do nothing to lend their voice and support when the blacks could use it. That changed with the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. On Monday, 23 groups representing the varied concerns of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender...

So much for civility. With Ed Schultz goading her on, a Dem state senator from Ohio referred to Republican elected officials as "occupiers" and urged women among other things to use their "passion" to "take out" the "right-wing occupiers." Nina Turner, the state senator in question, used language that would have caused an MSM outrage had a Republican used it to call for people to "take out" Dem "occupiers." View the video here.

I've been catalogging the chicanery of the GOP-E for a while now. Take a look at this: Notice how high the percentage of conservative states are proportional? Notice how low the percentage of progressive states are winner take all? Of course, there's overlap. But the trend is obvious. This whole thing was friggin rigged from the beginning, by the big wigs and power brokers, in order to get their big government republican darling into the nomination. Here's the count I took of the 50 states: Proportional red states - 25 Proportional blue states - 16 Winner Take All Red...

Employers pulled back sharply on hiring last month, a reminder that the U.S. economy may not be growing fast enough to sustain robust job growth. The unemployment rate dipped, but mostly because more Americans stopped looking for work. The Labor Department says the economy added 120,000 jobs in March, down from more than 200,000 in each of the previous three months. The unemployment rate fell to 8.2%, the lowest since January 2009. The rate dropped because fewer people searched for jobs. The official unemployment tally only includes those seeking work.

( – President Barack Obama insisted Thursday that without government spending, “Google, Facebook would not exist.” Obama made the remark at a campaign fundraiser while criticizing the budget passed by House Republicans. Obama said the Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget would, among other things, cut funding for research. “I believe in investing in basic research and science because I understand that all these extraordinary companies that are these enormous wealth-generators -- many of them would have never been there; Google, Facebook would not exist, had it not been for investments that we made as a country in basic science and research,”...

When restaurant customers learned that the waiter they called Angel was in the hospital with kidney failure, they stuffed bills into a collection jar to help support his family. His brother offered something more precious: a healthy kidney to restore his life. But for two years, the obstacles to the transplant seemed insuperable. Angel, the father of two American-born children, is an illegal immigrant. And a maze of conflicting health care and immigration policies meant that while the government would pay for a lifetime of dialysis, costing $75,000 yearly, it would not pay for a $100,000 transplant that would make...

If we are to make progress in this area we must feel comfortable enough with one another, and tolerant enough of each other, to have frank conversations about the racial matters that continue to divide us.” Holder’s words left many commentators flabbergasted. In late 1969, a conspiracy was hatched in secret all-night meetings in Washington, D.C. area hotel rooms that would have a profound impact on military aviation and Fort Worth. A handful of people were at the meetings: two rebel Air Force colonels, a Pentagon analyst and a General Dynamics engineer. Their goal was to create a fighter jet -- a relatively simple, inexpensive plane that could be sold by the hundreds. Fortunately, the conspirators succeeded, probably beyond any of their wildest dreams. On Tuesday, Lockheed Martin will celebrate delivery of the 4,500th F-16, the direct result of those late-night meetings....

During three days of arguments over the Obama healthcare plan, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan put on a display of rhetorical firepower, reinforcing predictions that the newest liberal justice is best equipped to take on the conservative, five-man majority controlling the bench. The strong views and persuasive tactics of the administration's former top lawyer could affect the fate of the healthcare overhaul, as well as decisions in other ideologically charged issues that will come before the court, such as same-sex marriage. Kagan's sturdy advocacy was evident to law professors and to lawyers who practice before the court during her first...

President Obama, in defending his vision of government's role in American lives, has increasingly turned to variants of two terms: "American exceptionalism" and "socialism." "My entire career has been a testament to American exceptionalism," said the president on Monday. "I will cut some folks some slack for now because they are still trying to win their nomination." Obama followed that remark on Tuesday by equating his tax increases with those of Ronald Reagan "who as I recall is not regarded as a tax-and-spend socialist," as he put it. At a fundraiser, last night, Obama affirmed the importance of "exporting our...

House Speaker Bill O'Brien reported with satisfaction yesterday that conduct by House Republicans at a hearing last year deemed "unruly and aggressive" by the attorney general did not violate any laws or legislative ethics. O'Brien said an investigation he requested by the head of State House security turned up no wrongdoing, but he told Attorney General Michael Delaney that the representatives involved "were very upset when the allegations made by you and your staff were not founded when made and publicized."

It’s now up to the Florida Supreme court to decide whether undocumented immigrants are allowed to be lawyers in the state. Regan McCarthy reports the Florida Board of Bar Examiners is asking the Court for its opinion. Jose Godinez-Samperio came to the United States on a visitors’ visa with his family as a young boy. When the visas expired, the family stayed. He became an Eagle Scout and graduated top of his class from high school. Now, as a Florida State University law school graduate, he wants to be a lawyer, but there are questions about whether he can be...

Here, in outline form, is why the pronouncements from President Barack Obama, warning the Supreme Court to not overturn Obamacare are so chilling: 1. The President supposedly went to Harvard Law School, graduated from same, was Law Review President of the Harvard Law Review at Harvard Law School. Then he supposedly taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Those are powerful law schools. Yet he obviously knows little of how the Constitution works if he thinks it would be rare or startling for the Supreme Court to overrule a law passed by Congress. Judging whether or not a law...

Big Tobacco is going all in against Proposition 29, the June ballot measure that would hike cigarette taxes by $1 per pack. On Thursday, the parent companies of Philip Morris USA and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. reported nearly $9 million in contributions to the opposition campaign. That gives the tobacco companies a war chest of more than $23.5 million ... ~snip Tobacco companies appear to be fighting public sentiment. A USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll last month found that 68% of California voters favored Proposition 29, compared with 29% who opposed it. Still, the public has rejected a variety of...
