KNOXVILLE — A judge today granted a new trial for a man convicted of killing a toddler. In the continuing fallout over former Knox County Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner's pill addiction and resulting crimes, Paul Jerome Johnson Jr. will be retried in the July 2008 beating and strangulation of 18-month-old Joseph De'Jon Manning. Johnson was convicted in a July 2010 trial presided over by Baumgartner. However, Baumgartner resigned before ruling on Johnson's motion for a new trial. Such motions are routinely filed after trials and generally denied, paving the way for appeal. Special Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood ruled today...

The government of North Korea recently invited dozens of foreign journalists into its secretive country to cover the 100th birthday celebration for founder Kim Il Sung on April 15. Among pageants and openings, the event drawing the most attention is the scheduled launch of a three-stage Unha-3 rocket carrying a weather satellite. The launch is already drawing criticism from Western governments: If successful, it could demonstrate North Korea's capacity to produce an intercontinental missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead. Despite their official invitation, foreign photographers are still restricted -- escorted wherever they go and unable to photograph more than...

HARTFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Less than a day into the general election campaign, probable Republican nominee Mitt Romney stumbled on a key issue on Wednesday in an early warning that he needs to sharpen up quickly to compete with President Barack Obama. Romney made the unlikely claim that the vast majority of U.S. jobs lost under Obama were held by women, and his campaign team struggled to say whether their candidate supports a fair pay law for women. Detroit - Remember “sticker shock”? After several years of heavily discounting their products in a desperate bid to keep assembly lines rolling, automakers are finding themselves back in the driver’s seat again – pushing prices to record levels. And it’s “not a blip,” warns one senior analyst, who expects the trend to continue for several years. The good news for shoppers is that trade-ins are also yielding better prices – and while that new car, truck or crossover may command more money than ever before it’s also likely to include significantly more features and markedly better fuel economy than

In a survey of 500 young doctors conducted this week, a majority responded that they felt pessimistic about the future of the US health care system, with the new healthcare law their central concern. Reuters reported Wednesday that 57 percent of the young doctors (those under 40) that responded to the survey said that the Affordable Health Care Act, so called "Obamacare," would have a negative impact on their practices. This is in contrast to the 23 percent that said it would be positive. The Baby Center website cited other surveys that found similar results among doctors, such as the...

MONTERREY, Mexico — Gunmen killed eight cab drivers Tuesday in two attacks in the city of Monterrey in northern Mexico, officials said. Three people including an 8-year-old girl were injured. Nuevo Leon state public security spokesman Jorge Domene Zambrano says four gunmen shot the first five drivers outside a taxi base office. Minutes later, three men were killed apparently by the same group a few blocks away. Domene said two of the three people wounded in Tuesday's attacks were innocent bystanders, including the girl. He said the victims were driving taxis without permits. Police are investigating a former driver who...

According to the newly released report, Dying with Dignity, co-signed by nine Quebec politicians, people are now ready to regard death through a new lens. We can free ourselves from a traditional "paternalistic" relationship with our physicians in order to embrace a more informed attitude in facing suffering and end-of-life issues. Our values, the report says, have greatly evolved in the past 20 years; therefore, it is only normal that in our farewell to life, we should take a close look at a new option offered by the state. The report's writers caution that although in the past Quebecers' values...

A Mount Prospect FBI intelligence analyst who was kicked out of special agents training because he could not do 30 push-ups, filed a lawsuit alleging the physical test discriminates against men. After completing more than 20 weeks of training and passing firearms and academic tests, Jay J. Bauer could only complete 29 push-ups during the physical fitness test, according to the federal lawsuit filed last week. “Plaintiff has more to offer the FBI and believes that his career should not be derailed by a single push-up,” his attorneys argue in the suit. The lawsuit argues the minimum requirement of 30...
