  • Who is Paul Krugman kidding? Inflation is morally abhorrent

Paul Krugman again. Still beholden to chimerical Phillips Curve absurdities, the professor proposes inflation to stimulate stagnant labor markets. The Phillips Curve insists that rising inflation lowers unemployment. The theory presumes businesses increase prices faster than workers’ wages raise effectively making labor inexpensive. When real salaries shrink, hiring accelerates. As Krugman details, the Fed’s focus is dual: stable prices and full employment. So he seeks to overcome persistent unemployment through purposeful failure on the price front, lamenting that “Fed officials ... are feeling intimidated ... and that American workers are paying the price for their timidity.” Krugman thus urges Ben...

Police tear gas launched into a Vallejo home in February played a role in starting a fire that caused $60,000 in damage and killed two dogs, a fire department report released Monday finds. However, the Feb. 10, two-alarm blaze at 1041 Castlewood Drive was deemed "accidental in nature," according to the 13-page investigation report. The exact cause was undetermined. But it likely involved one of the non-flammable rounds hitting or knocking over flammable household products, the report said. The fire began shortly after police launched 12 tear gas rounds into various parts of the house. Police were trying to ferret...

Rare Ancient Statue Depicts Topless Female Gladiator A small bronze statue dating back nearly 2,000 years may be that of a female gladiator, a victorious one at that, suggests a new study. If confirmed the statue would represent only the second depiction of a woman gladiator known to exist. The gladiator statue shows a topless woman, wearing only a loincloth and a bandage around her left knee. Her hair is long, although neat, and in the air she raises what the researcher, Alfonso Manas of the University of Granada, believes is a sica, a short curved sword used by gladiators....

First Lady Michelle Obama recalled her father's battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) as she explained "what's at stake" in this election between President Obama and Mitt Romney -- whose wife has MS. Mrs. Obama recalled her father's MS during a campaign fundraiser, saying he "had MS, was a blue-collar city worker all his life . . . The budget panel announced it would hold a markup of the budget on Wednesday, even though Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) has said a budget proposal for 2013 is unnecessary because the debt-limit law passed in August sets the discretionary spending limit at $1.047 trillion. Sometimes, capturing a Taliban commander requires vast resources and complex operations. Last week in eastern Afghanistan, it required neither. Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level Taliban commander in Paktika province, strolled toward a police checkpoint in the district of Sar Howza with a wanted poster bearing his own face. He demanded the finder’s fee referenced on the poster: $100. Afghan officials, perplexed by the man’s misguided motives, arrested him on the spot. Ashan is suspected of plotting at least two attacks on Afghan security forces. His misdeeds prompted officials to plaster the district with hundreds of so-called “Be on the Lookout” posters...

Mitt Romney was a moderate governor in Massachusetts with an unimpressive record of governance. He left office with an approval rating in the thirties and his signature achievement, Romneycare, was a Hurricane Katrina style disaster for the state. Since that’s the case, it’s fair to ask what a Republican who’s not conservative and can’t even carry his own state brings to the table for GOP primary voters. The answer is always the same: Mitt Romney is supposed to be “the most electable” candidate. This is a baffling argument because many people just seem to assume it’s true, despite the plethora...

Defend Life, a small, Baltimore-based pro-life group, is celebrating a major legal victory nearly four years after its members were illegally arrested, strip-searched and jailed by the Maryland State Police for peacefully protesting abortion at an intersection in Harford County. In August 2008, 18 members of Defend Life displayed graphic posters of aborted fetuses along Route 24 as part of its annual "Face the Truth Tour." In response to irate calls from passing motorists, state troopers soon arrived and demanded to see the group's permit. In a videotaped confrontation available on YouTube, founder Jack Ames politely asks a state trooper why they...

Thanks to hip-hop superstar Drake’s latest music video, there are now far more eyes focusing on Temple Israel’s bimah than there are even during the High Holidays. And even though the song’s lyrics are decidedly more profane than sacred, the Reform synagogue's president said he hoped the video would help Jewish youth connect to Judaism. The video, parts of which were filmed in the Miami shul’s sanctuary, purports to depict Drake’s “re-bar mitzvah,” showing the Jewish rapper reading from what appears to be a Torah. But the accompanying song, "HYFR" (Hell Yeah F***ing Right), has nothing to do with a...

Hey, if we’re going to talk about how presidential candidates treated dogs decades ago, let’s talk about how presidential candidates treated dogs decades ago. Can you name the author of this quote? “With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the...

A fire over the weekend swept through a condominium complex in the Catskills that was once the Brown’s Hotel, where Jerry Lewis and other comedians entertained crowds of vacationing New Yorkers. The fire began around 6 p.m. Saturday and moved quickly through the complex, destroying seven of nine buildings, Steven Vegliante, the town supervisor of Fallsburg, N.Y., said in an interview on Sunday. About 100 people were in the buildings and were evacuated, he said, noting that many were staying at a makeshift shelter at Sullivan County Community College. “We’re just pleased that no one died and no one was...

Waited on line at post office to mail ira deposit today. Line was about 40 people long because of taxes. A NYPD cop just skips the line and walks to the counter. As he was walking back I said, "corrupt cop". He said "he's busy". Like none of the private sector people aren't busy. Then as people started questioning him, saying "aren't we busy too" he said I know, "you pay my salary" and laughed.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A year ago, organized labor was threatening a break with President Barack Obama for being too willing to compromise with Republicans on issues like the debt ceiling, Bush tax cuts, free trade and workplace legislation. Union leaders said they would no longer walk in lock step with Democratic politicians if they did not support labor's agenda, and hinted at more campaigns like the $10 million they spent in an unsuccessful bid to defeat Democratic Senator Blanche Lincoln in the 2010 Arkansas primary. But that was last year.

Budget cuts are set to force the Los Angeles County court system to close 56 courtrooms, including that of its most famous adjudicator, Judge Lance Ito. The courtroom controlled by the man who presided over O.J. Simpson’s 1995 murder trial will be shut down by June 30, the Associated Press reported. Ito will be reassigned to fill in on cases in which no judge is available, AP said. His courtroom is one of many across the nation's largest trial court system that will go dark. The county courts will also lay off 350 workers, reduce use of court reporters and...
