Paul Krugman again. Still beholden to chimerical Phillips Curve absurdities, the professor proposes inflation to stimulate stagnant labor markets. The Phillips Curve insists that rising inflation lowers unemployment. The theory presumes businesses increase prices faster than workers’ wages raise effectively making labor inexpensive. When real salaries shrink, hiring accelerates. As Krugman details, the Fed’s focus is dual: stable prices and full employment. So he seeks to overcome persistent unemployment through purposeful failure on the price front, lamenting that “Fed officials ... are feeling intimidated ... and that American workers are paying the price for their timidity.” Krugman thus urges Ben...

Should our fine financial system cease functioning cash will become a rare and precious medium. Over the years Americans have exchanged paper currency with confidence. Yet, today everyone's cash is a digital value out of hand. Our vast nationwide cash money market holdings greatly exceed any paper currency supply making any Bank run a momentary event. Should the financial house of cards crash, holders of green back US Dollars will be able to engage in trade. Gold hoarders will not know what to do. Credit cards won't work. Checks won't either. If you can't barter, cash will be king. Get...

Police tear gas launched into a Vallejo home in February played a role in starting a fire that caused $60,000 in damage and killed two dogs, a fire department report released Monday finds. However, the Feb. 10, two-alarm blaze at 1041 Castlewood Drive was deemed "accidental in nature," according to the 13-page investigation report. The exact cause was undetermined. But it likely involved one of the non-flammable rounds hitting or knocking over flammable household products, the report said. The fire began shortly after police launched 12 tear gas rounds into various parts of the house. Police were trying to ferret...

Rare Ancient Statue Depicts Topless Female Gladiator A small bronze statue dating back nearly 2,000 years may be that of a female gladiator, a victorious one at that, suggests a new study. If confirmed the statue would represent only the second depiction of a woman gladiator known to exist. The gladiator statue shows a topless woman, wearing only a loincloth and a bandage around her left knee. Her hair is long, although neat, and in the air she raises what the researcher, Alfonso Manas of the University of Granada, believes is a sica, a short curved sword used by gladiators....

Recognizing Jesus In The Eucharist Apr 11th, 2012by Gary Zimak.  And it happened that, while He was with them at table, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Him… (Luke 24:30-31)For the second consecutive day, the gospel reading from daily Mass presents a story of someone who was dejected…and shouldn’t have been! Just as we saw yesterday with Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb, the 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus were sad about the Lord’s death and didn’t realize that He was right...

First Lady Michelle Obama recalled her father's battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) as she explained "what's at stake" in this election between President Obama and Mitt Romney -- whose wife has MS. Mrs. Obama recalled her father's MS during a campaign fundraiser, saying he "had MS, was a blue-collar city worker all his life . . . [and her parents] saved for us, they sacrificed everything for us, why? Because they wanted something more for me and my brother." The First Lady summarized the anecdote by saying "that's what's at stake" -- by which she referred to the idea that...

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer advises presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to counter Obama's negative campaign with a negative campaign of his own. "Negative campaigns can work, and we're getting a taste of it right now. I think Romney's strategy should be to embrace that negativity. Just go for it and point out -- go back to it and point out how it's a sign of scurrilousness and hypocrisy," Krauthammer said on FOX News' "O'Reilly Factor." "Look at the mean that Democrats have put out from top to bottom. Republicans, Romney, the war on women, a concocted idea. War on...

First Lady Michelle Obama: Supreme Court At Stake In Election By Olivier Knox | ABC OTUS News First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday put the Supreme Court at the core of President Barack Obama's argument for reelection, telling supporters that the vote in November could affect Americans' security, freedoms and whether they can "love whomever we choose" -- a reference to the fight over gay and lesbian rights. "This President has brought us out of the dark and into the light," she said in a speech at a rally in Nashville. "I hope you all are fired up and ready...

Will the American coalition of interests and groups c alled conservative fall apart a few months from now when President Reagan leaves office? Will there succeed to power in Washington a very different coalition, made up of extreme liberals, black radicals, and militant feminists? Is the conservative movemen t in the United States, which began to take form forty years ago, enervated and disheartened, plodding down the road to Avernus? Nay, not so. The political and social attitudes that we call conservative are deeply rooted among Americans, and the leaders of both great political parties are thoroughly aware of that...

Don't get too excited, folks -- Harry Reid still plans to obstruct an actual vote.  Baby steps:   The Senate Budget Committee on Monday moved to take up a budget for fiscal 2013, renewing pressure from Republicans to bring the resolution up for a floor vote. The budget panel announced it would hold a markup of the budget on Wednesday, even though Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) has said a budget proposal for 2013 is unnecessary because the debt-limit law passed in August sets the discretionary spending limit at $1.047 trillion. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said he...

Sometimes, capturing a Taliban commander requires vast resources and complex operations. Last week in eastern Afghanistan, it required neither. Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level Taliban commander in Paktika province, strolled toward a police checkpoint in the district of Sar Howza with a wanted poster bearing his own face. He demanded the finder’s fee referenced on the poster: $100. Afghan officials, perplexed by the man’s misguided motives, arrested him on the spot. Ashan is suspected of plotting at least two attacks on Afghan security forces. His misdeeds prompted officials to plaster the district with hundreds of so-called “Be on the Lookout” posters...

BRONX (WABC) -- What is drawing huge crowds in the Bronx, people lining up around the block, to get into a storefront that houses a tax preparation office, what's really going on? People who went to the storefront asked Eyewitness News to investigate after they claim they were promised thousands of dollars in government surplus money that would be put on pre-paid debit cards. Cost-cutting measures at Saint-Vincent Hospital's complex continuing care unit mean patients could soon be responsible for doing their own laundry. Officials at St. Vincent Hospital, which is part of Bruyère Continuing Care, said instead of using a cleaning service the continuing care unit would be installing coin-operated washers and dryers for patients and their families to use. The organization said it is $2 million in debt and needs to find savings. They are hoping family members can help the patients do their laundry after a new policy is in place starting in June.

Last Friday, former energy trader and now Fox News host Eric Bolling and I hosted a Fox special called “Paying at the Pump,” which offered President Obama solutions to reduce prices at the pump and get our country on the path to real energy security. A genuine “all of the above” approach to energy independence is, of course, a multifaceted plan. It includes conservation and sensible private sector investment in sound alternative energy, and it absolutely must involve unleashing our domestic energy production. We cannot ignore the need to drill, baby, drill; frack, baby, frack; and mine, baby, mine. Those...

The original intention of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), passed in 1990, was to facilitate the return of Native American bones and sacred objects to descendants and culturally affiliated groups. NAGPRA sought to balance the rights of Native Americans to reclaim ancestral remains with the right of society as a whole to learn about our collective past. By and large, the law was succeeding. In recent years scientists and representatives of Native peoples have been working together to everyone's gain. For example, archaeologist Alston Thoms of Texas A&M University has been consulting with Native Americans about...

The House on Tuesday passed legislation giving hunters and fishing enthusiasts access to certain public lands to pursue their sport and also blocked the Environmental Protection Agency from banning lead for use in ammunition and fishing tackle. The Sportsmen’s Heritage Act passed on a mostly party line vote of 274 yeas and 146 nays. Republicans argued that the ability of sportsmen and women to fish and shoot on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service is being threatened by the Obama administration and environmentalists through bureaucratic regulations. Republicans also said that banning lead bullets...
