“In the Green Pastures of the Twenty-third Psalm” (Psalm 23)Today is what is known in the church as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Every year on this Sunday during the Easter season, the Gospel Reading comes from John 10, where several times Jesus calls himself the “good shepherd” of the sheep. And, every year, the psalm appointed for this day is Psalm 23, perhaps the most famous and well-loved of all the psalms, the one that begins, “The LORD is my shepherd.” The danger with such a familiar and well-loved passage is that it can become for us just so much “white...

For the first time in history, Americans owe more money on student loans than they do on credit cards.  At one trillion dollars and on the rise, the behemoth government takeover of the student loan industry has set into motion a new financial crisis. The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA), a bill attached to the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. “ObamaCare”), was signed into law by Congress on March 30, 2010.  Essentially, the legislation scraps the bank-based program, and substitutes that with a direct-lending program, where students are required to take out loans through their financial aid office that...

WINNERS vs LOSERS When a winner makes a mistake, he says, “I was wrong.” When a loser makes a mistake, he says, “It wasn’t my fault.” A winner always gives 110% no matter how big or small the task. A loser is always “too busy” to do what is necessary and finds excuses. A winner goes through a problem. A loser goes around it, and never gets past it. A winner makes commitments. A loser makes promises. A winner says, “I’m good, but not as good as I ought to be.” A loser says, “I’m...

You had better start increasing your personal retirement savings, because Social Security is fast approaching insolvency. According to the latest Social Security Trustees' report, released Monday, the program's combined trust funds will be exhausted by 2033 -- three years earlier than last year's projection and seven years earlier than projections made in 2006. This means that by 2033 Social Security benefits would have to be slashed significantly. Sounds bad, right? Well, it gets worse. Since 2010, Social Security has been running a permanent cash-flow deficit. This means that the taxes collected for the program aren't enough to cover the benefits...

In 2011, death row inmate Abdul Awkal sued an Ohio prison because he was receiving non-halal food while in prison. As a consequence, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction banned all pork products in prison. This year, prisoner James Rivers filed a lawsuit arguing that pork should not be outright banned. He reasoned that, should Muslims not want to eat pork, they had the right to, but that it was discriminatory to ban pork for everyone. Additionally, the prison did offer meals without pork products in them before the ban. To reinforce Rivers's lawsuit, prison authorities argued that the...

The Department of Labor announced that it was withdrawing its proposed rule banning the employment of persons younger than 16 years of age on farms. “There are many hazards in agricultural work,” observed Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. “Dangerous machines, sharp tools, and large animals pose a threat to those working in this environment. Our aim was to protect children from being injured or worse. We had no idea that farm families routinely call upon their minor children to participate in undertaking the tasks of running the family business.” An outpouring of opposition to the proposed new rule from the...

America has had 43 presidents, but only a handful of them are considered truly great. First, of course, is the humble general and commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, George Washington, and certainly right behind him is Abraham Lincoln, who saved the Union and whose actions led to the abolition of slavery. Then there was foundational figurehead Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence and doubled the size of the country; a surprising wartime leader named Harry Truman whose bold decision brought the end of WWII; and the incomparable Ronald Reagan, communism-buster and Cold War victor. Now, after just three...

NORTH BEND, Wash. (AP) — After a 22-hour standoff, police blew the top off a rugged mountain bunker near Seattle on Saturday, only to find their target — a man believed to be a murder suspect who holed up there — dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside. Authorities had not positively identified the body as 41-year-old Peter Keller, who hadn't been seen since his wife and daughter were found shot to death last weekend, King County sheriff's Sgt. Katie Larson said. A bomb squad cleared the bunker, built into a ridge in the Cascade Mountains, to make sure there...
