  • President Obama's "All Of The Above" Energy Duplicity

    Forbes ^ | May 6, 2012 | Robert Bradley Jr.
There's been a noticeable sea change in the way President Obama talks about energy. Don't buy the makeover. The new Obama is running from his record - and plans to revert to old ways after what he calls "my last election" with all the tools at his disposal. To simply stick with the pro-green, anti-oil strategy was political peril. So Obama went surreal with an "all-of-the-above" energy agenda. Obama's Environmental Protection Agency recently issued new rules that will force 32 mostly coal-powered plants to close and threaten another 36 facilities. The agency has also issued "blackout" regulations that effectively prohibit...

THE value-added tax is getting some love lately, but will anyone listen? In his new book, "The Benefit and the Burden: Tax Reform—Why We Need It and What It Will Take", Bruce Bartlett, an erstwhile Republican wonk, comes out in favour of a VAT. Josh Barro, a center-right economic policy analyst, writes today in favour of a VAT at Bloomberg View. Just one more curmudgeonly self-hating conservative tax analyst and we have a trend! (If you're not sure how a VAT works, Mr Barro's third paragraph has you covered.) Conservatives have long opposed a VAT on the grounds that it...

This column is about politics. Today, it’s not. Still, there’s Watergate, Paul Revere, Edward R. Murrow, fighting for your right, so, kinda still. Adam Nathaniel Yauch died Friday. If you’re age 16-66 — maybe 106 — you know him as MCA, one-third of the Beastie Boys. He was 47. Way too young. But gone. Now, half-white Barack Obama (exactly my age) didn’t say a word, even though he was talking to college kids that day, but make no mistake, MCA was no JayZ or Kanye West. Vice President Joe Biden seemed to endorse same-sex marriage Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Conflicting responses then came from Biden's office and the Obama campaign. A spokesperson for Biden clarified that the vice president had not changed his position, but his position is "evolving." "Look, I just think that the good news is that as more and more Americans come to understand what this is all about, it's a simple proposition: Who do you love? Who do you love? Assuming Francois Hollande triumphs over Nicolas Sarkozy in today's second round of the French presidential election – the odds against a late Sarkozy comeback being very long indeed – then the Socialist victor faces another contest in the very near future. Next he has to take on the opponent that he himself called in campaign speeches "my real adversary, the world of finance". That could be a bitter encounter – though you might not think so from early indications. Markets have been in wait-and-see mode in the run-up to today's poll, as well as the less talked-about general election in...

Europe was plunged into fresh economic chaos last night as France rejected austerity and elected a tax-and-spend socialist president. Nicolas Sarkozy suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Francois Hollande, who ran on a platform of tearing up last December’s controversial deal to save the euro from oblivion. The inexperienced Mr Hollande is now seeking talks with the European Central Bank and German Chancellor Angela Merkel to demand further borrowing to boost growth. The defense attorney who wore a traditional Islamic outfit during the rowdy arraignment of the accused Sept. 11 terrorists is defending her courtroom appeal that other women in the room wear more "appropriate" clothing to the proceedings -- out of respect for her client's Muslim beliefs. Cheryl Bormann, counsel for defendant Walid bin Attash, attended the arraignment Saturday dressed in a hijab, apparently because her client insisted on it. She further requested that the court order other women to follow that example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes "for fear of committing a sin under...

The Obama re-elect launches the campaign with back to back rallies in Ohio and Virginia. Comparing these events to the spectacular rallies of 2008, what shows is that despair has gripped the young and bright. The rallies showed a mechanical determination, a slow-motion defeatism. The nation has changed considerably since 2008 -- grittier, quieter, more cautious, less confident -- and it is well to acknowledge the genuine face of doubt. POTUS starts the conversation about his re-election with dollops of denial. Mitt Romney is on theme, jobs and growth and jobs and Federal finances. Mr. Obama is defending the status...

The mainstream media will attempt to spin French President Nicholas Sarkozy's loss today to Socialist challenger François Hollande as a rejection of "austerity" policies--and to urge American voters to reject the deficit-cutting politics of the Tea Party when we go to the polls in November. In fact, there are important lessons from France--and they are the precise opposite of what the media is telling us. First, to call Sarkozy's policies "austerity" is to insult both austerity and socialism. The French government--like other European governments--sought to close its budget gap primarily by raising taxes, not by cutting the size and cost...

Joined by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), 26 other Democrats and one Republican, he proposes a constitutional amendment to radically contract First Amendment protections. His purpose is to vastly expand government's power - i.e., the power of incumbent legislators - to write laws regulating, rationing or even proscribing speech in elections that determine the composition of the legislature and the rest of the government. McGovern's proposal vindicates those who say that most campaign-finance "reforms" are incompatible with the...

Financial markets are braced for a radical shift in economic policy and fresh question marks over a eurozone break-up, as Francois Hollande moves into the Elysee Palace on Monday as the first Socialist president of France for 30 years. Mr Hollande's 'farewell to austerity' programme combines taxing the rich, raising public spending and lowering the retirement age. With Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich out of the race, Romney is his party's pick to take on President Barack Obama this fall, barring a catastrophe. While Romney talks like the nominee, the former Massachusetts governor has work to do to round up enough convention delegates to make it official. Romney has 859 delegates, according to The Associated Press count. That's 285 short of the 1,144 he needs to win the nomination. Romney could get about...

There has been a lot of confusion and angst about New Mexico dropping recognition of the Arizona CCW (along with 10 other states). Fortunately Gov. Susana Martinez reacted to the tsunami or firestorm of emails and had the New Mexico DPS restore those reciprocities and recognitions. As of May 1, 2012 this is the reciprocity list: http://www.dps.nm.org/index.php/nm-c...ty-agreements/ Gov. Martinez is an NRA member and made perfect scores on the live fire portion on the NM CCW permit test with the 45 auto and 38 revolver. I hope that this allays a lot of the consternation that has resulted from this....

“In Virginia, there was an overflow crowd. And that’s the way it is. But the fact is that 14,000 is 11,000 more than the largest crowd that Mitt Romney has ever drawn,” David Axelrod said on ABC's "This Week." “I am certain that we are going to have an enthused volunteer core and enthused electorate out there. The thing that we’ve seen over time is that Republican enthusiasm has dropped precipitously, partly because what we’ve seen from Governor Romney is all negative.”

Illegal aliens working in the United States are technically required to fill out a tax return and pay their income taxes. We all laugh about claiming a additional deduction here or there for some neighborhood kid who eats the food out of your fridge and hangs out at your house all the time, but many of these workers are claiming deductions for children living in Mexico. Each spring, at tax preparation offices all across the nation, many illegal immigrants are now eagerly filing tax returns to take advantage of a tax loophole, using their ITIN numbers to get huge refunds...

Fears of a Leftist lurch have been in the price for weeks. The CAC-40 index of French stocks has underperformed Germany’s DAX by 20pc since last August, an ominous divergence for two countries yoked so tightly together. The yield spread of German 10-year Bunds over French OAT bonds has jumped 90 basis points. It reflects a gut feeling in global markets that France is sliding into deep trouble, clinging to a ruinously expensive social model in a Teutonic monetary union and a Chinese trading world. French economists say the moment of danger will come later this summer - whoever is...

Young people face a cruel irony. Most can't land a decent job without a college education, yet many graduates are locked into poorly paying positions that don't permit repayment of student loans.
