ABC News, in a rather surprising bit of actual investigative journalism, is covering some newly released documents from our intelligence agencies dating back to the 1960s. In response to an Associated Press FOIA request, the FBI has provided records of some very interesting and potentially highly embarrassing exchanges between a young Senator Robert Byrd, who sought secret documents regarding unnamed civil rights leaders of the time. His actions also managed to spark something of an internal war between two agencies over their inability to keep secret documents under control. U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd obtained secret FBI documents about the...

This was a question that I put out to a number of my friends and contacts last week, on Twitter and across a couple of e-mail lists. Imagine for a moment that Mt. Rushmore had never been built and the mountain still stood today as a natural rock outcrop. Could we come together as a nation and build such a monument in 2012? There are a number of questions to be wrestled to the ground on this one. Who would pay for it and how? Who would oppose it and why? And – perhaps most contentious of all – which...

The world’s largest democracy provided its approval of a mission to the red planet next year, voting in favor of a mission to Mars in October or November 2013. Obama was playing golf at Andrews Air Force Base on Saturday before heading to Camp David, the private presidential retreat in Maryland's Catoctin (kuh-TAHK'-tin) Mountains. Obama got some early birthday wishes on Thursday during a campaign rally in Florida, where supporters sang "Happy Birthday" to the president.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell proposed that the Senate vote on repeal of Obamacare soon after it returns from vacation in September, The Hill reports. “Let’s have a vote,” McConnell said on the floor. “Is Obamacare making things better or worse? President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, U.S. sources familiar with the matter said. Obama's order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence "finding," broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad. This and other developments signal a shift toward growing, albeit still circumscribed, support for Assad's armed opponents - a shift that intensified following last month's failure of the U.N. Security Council to agree on tougher sanctions against the Damascus government....

The social experiment that was Barack Obama's election and presidency is over. Way over. As one who was born in the heart of Boston and worked the political world of Washington for 20 years, I know quite a few Democrats. Some are family, and many are close friends. Most voted for Obama in 2008. None at this point is inclined to vote for him in 2012. Why? With the presidential election less than four months away, it's imperative that voters in November find the process as fair and accessible as possible. Several states have decided to enact the requirement of possessing a photo ID to help prevent the occurrence of voter fraud. Several years ago, we discovered that on average, the rate of change in the growth rate of stock prices is often directly proportionate to the rate of change in the growth rate of their underlying dividends per share that is expected at identifiable points of time in the future. Using the math we worked out from that discovery, we found that we could often accurately forecast where stock prices would be. We say "often" because the stock market can be a very noisy place from time to time. We've observed stock prices diverge from where their expected future dividends per...

I’ve long believed the Labor Department’s monthly employment statistics are horribly inaccurate. So bad, in fact, that they are hardly worth compiling. But I never thought the numbers were fudged — until now. The government reported yesterday that 163,000 jobs were created in July and that the unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 8.3 percent. While Wall Street’s first reaction to the job report was very positive, that’ll change in the weeks ahead. Why? Because the strength of the report probably eliminated any chance that Ben Bernanke’s Federal Reserve would begin a new money- printing operation, known as...

  • Donald Boudreaux: Was Milton Friedman a Secret Admirer of Keynes?

With the possible exception of Adam Smith, no person in history is more widely recognized as ably championing free markets than Milton Friedman. Justly so: For more than 60 years until his death in 2006, he pressed the case for capitalism and freedom with impeccable scholarship, good cheer, impressive vigor and unmatched clarity. Despite his clarity, there are a handful of people whose inability or unwillingness to grasp Friedman's arguments leads them to misrepresent his writings and policy recommendations. "I conclude that Keynes's political bequest has done far more harm than his economic bequest and this for two reasons. First,...

The latest jobs report should persuade all those who worry about the president’s economic policies but find him likable that enough is enough, and that policy trumps personality when it comes to deciding who should occupy the White House. Job creation remains anemic, the unemployment rate has ticked up to 8.3 percent, and the labor force participation rate continues to fall as more and more Americans choose the couch over tramping the streets looking for work. The Labor Department sums it up: Both the number of unemployed and the unemployment rate "have shown little movement thus far in 2012." It...

Obama is at 50 percent or higher in just 13 states, from a 50 percent rating in Minnesota to a 63 percent rating in Hawaii. The president is most popular in Washington DC, where his job approval rating is an astonishing 83 percent.

U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd obtained secret FBI documents about the civil rights movement that were leaked by the CIA and triggered an angry confrontation between the two agencies in the 1960s, according to newly released FBI records. Byrd, who died in June 2010 at age 92, had sought the FBI intelligence while suspecting that communists and subversives were guiding the civil rights cause, the records show.

The Coming Obama Landslide? Liberals don’t want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney’s path to victory is getting harder every day. There’s a secret lurking behind everything you’re reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to...

Sigh! I have an older Toshiba laptop running W7. The other day my wife called me at work to tell me the Windows Repair program came up. It was too late to tell her to shut it down. Now, every boot comes up with the repair screen. I cannot even boot into Safe modes or command prompt. I downloaded and ran the AVG bootable CD with the anti-virus program on it. It came back negative. I now have the hard drive plugged into my desktop via a USB adapter and have tried several times to scan it with Malwarebytes. I...

One of the commenters on the Adam Smith "apology" VIDEO made the astute observation that Smith's "apology" sounded a lot like the "apology" made by Wesley, a hippie character in the movie "Forrest Gump," after he hit Jenny. I looked up the script of "Forrest Gump and the commenter was dead on in the comparison. Here is Wesley's "apology" to Jenny: WESLEY: Jenny? Things got a little out of hand. It's just this war and that, that lyin' son-of-a-bitch Johnson. I would never hurt you. You know that. And just like Wesley, Smith brings up extraneous political stuff to excuse...

My friends at Americans for Tax Reform have received a bunch of attention for a new report entitled “Win Olympic Gold, Pay the IRS.” In this clever document, they reveal that athletes could face a tax bill – to those wonderful folks at the IRS – of nearly $9,000 thanks to America’s unfriendly worldwide tax system. The topic is even getting attention overseas. Here’s an excerpt from a BBC report. US medal-winning athletes at the Olympics have to pay tax on their prize money – something which is proving controversial in the US. But why are athletes from the US taxed when others...
