Full Title: Giant American Flag Spotted Laying on the Ground Before Obama University Event [Update: School Apologizes, Removes Picture, Then Backtracks] Today, President Obama is slated to travel to the University of Iowa to campaign in the crucial battleground state. The Obama campaign’s “advance team” has been making preparations for the president’s appearance since Monday, sources at the university tell TheBlaze. But no one was prepared for the photo that was taken at the Obama speaking location as the Democratic National Convention wrapped up in Charlotte, N.C. The photo is of the preparation for the president’s speech on the quad...

As the clock ticks down to a planned Sept. 10 teachers strike in Chicago, teachers unions and battles over school choice are gaining higher profiles nationally. “Won’t Back Down” – a pro-school choice movie starring Maggie Gyllenhaal — had a screening at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., ruffling feathers with the threat of a wide Hollywood release that could make Chicago the flashpoint for broader education policy fights. And more than 37,000 people have watched “The Machine,” a YouTube video about the impact of teachers unions on public elections, since its launch Wednesday. The video illustrates how money...

A wave of protests in Hong Kong ahead of elections is posing a major test for the city's new leader as the prospect of voter discontent threatens to shake up the political landscape in retaliation against perceived meddling by Beijing. This time round, Hong Kong's legislature will have a more democratic flavor—it has been expanded from 60 to 70 seats, with just over half of them to be directly elected in Sunday's polls. The results are likely to reflect recent anti-China sentiment, especially over a plan for a school curriculum extolling the achievements of the Chinese Communist Party. …

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows President Obama attracting support from 46% of voters nationwide, while Mitt Romney earns 44% of the vote. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided… The president is enjoying a convention bounce that has been evident in the last two nights of tracking data. He led by two just before the Republican convention, so he has already erased the modest bounce Romney received from his party’s celebration in Tampa. Perhaps more significantly, Democratic interest in the campaign has soared. For the first time, those in...

Dan from Squirrel Hill's Blog Anne-Marie Slaughter is a spoiled whiny crybaby In the July/August 2012 issue of Atlantic magazine, Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote this article called “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All.”The very title of the article smacks of radical leftist feminism – an ideology which see victimhood everywhere. In the real world, regardless of one’s gender, it is not possible for a person to “have it all.” And yet, because Slaughter does not “have it all,” she assumes that she is a victim of sexism and gender discrimination. How LA deals with its homeless continues to evolve, and recognition of their property rights has compelled the city to modify its approach to cleaning and clearing the Skid Row sidewalks, a place many people reside and keep their belongings. "You get tired of carrying it around," said Ken Owens, 64, who finds himself homeless waiting for his pension to kick in after his next birthday. Last year, homeless advocates received a federal court order enforcing property rights, forbidding city cleanup crews from simply throwing away unattended items such as clothing or toiletries or ID. A previously unheard 1994 lecture by a young Barack Obama offers a new glimpse of his days as a up-and-coming, liberal Illinois politician. The recording, given to BuzzFeed by a Republican source, comes from a lecture on the nature of community values he delivered at Nebraska Wesleyan University on September 9, 1994. Obama told the students in Lincoln, Neb. that "values are dynamic,"and he dismissed appeals from everyone from Bill Clinton to Dan Quayle to "static" or "Ozzie and Harriet" values. Obama suggested those values — "The wife is at home, she’s not working, Dad’s got his 9 to 5,...

...During the first quarter of this year, total U.S. car loans totaled $52.5 billion. That’s 49% higher than the same period in 2009. Also during the first quarter, the average amount financed on new vehicles rose by $589, to $25,995, and for used cars by $411, to $17,050. Furthermore, buyers are stretching out payments for longer terms: The average length of new- and used-vehicle loans jumped a full month during the first three months of this year, to 64 and 59 months, respectively. The surge in auto sales is being completely driven by doling out more loans for a longer...
  • Queens man dies after attacking kickboxing gas-station clerk

He picked the wrong guy to mess with. A drunken Queens man went berserk after he couldn’t get an ATM to work at a gas station early yesterday and was killed when he turned his rage to the attendant — a former competitive kickboxer. “I feel bad. I didn’t mean for the guy to die. He called me a Taliban,” said Jasjeet Walia, who was released from custody last night after being grilled by cops all day. “I feel like throwing up. I’m having a bad headache,” said Walia, an amateur kickboxer for seven years in his native Mumbai. Arzeno...
  • When even the media thinks the Democratic Convention is an ‘abortion-palooza,’ you know it’s bad

When even liberals and the mainstream media think the Democratic National Convention has turned into an abortion-palooza, it must really be blatant. Apparently even ideologically aligned reporters have their breaking point on abortion promotion. To wit… Pro-abortion New York Times columnist David Brooks, after Day 1: The one cavil I will have … is this speech has – [it] reinforces something we’ve heard all night, which was how much the crowd goes crazy and how passionate they are about abortion and gay marriage and the social issues. And tonight has been about that. And to me it should have...

Dan from Squirrel Hill's Blog When Obama carried out his Solyndra con game, he broke the same law that Martha Stewart went to prison for breaking In 2009 the Obama administration gave $535 million to Solyndra, claiming that it would create 4,000 new jobs. However, instead of creating those 4,000 new jobs, the company went bankrupt. It was later revealed that the company’s shareholders and executives had made substantial donations to Obama’s campaign, that the company had spent a large sum of money on lobbying, and that Solyndra executives had had many meetings with White House officials. It was also revealed...

45 years after the Land O’ Lakes Statement, Catholic education is gaining strength . . .The 1960s was a time of great tumult in the United States — one that had devastating effects on the country’s institutions and mores. Its ravages could be seen perhaps nowhere more clearly than on college campuses. Truth gave way to skepticism and relativism, and expressions such as “free love” and “question authority” became the catchphrases of student life. Catholic colleges were not immune to these influences. Venerable institutions that for many scores of years had faithfully passed on the intellectual patrimony of the Church...
  • Dolan spoils the party (Why did Democrats allow the cardinal to give a right-wing prayer? )

The Democrats still have a religion problem. No, not that religion problem. They just can’t seem to get past wanting the blessing of a larger-than-life religious figure — even when that figure has called their policies “un-American” and depicts their core beliefs as antithetical to our most cherished freedoms. The circumstances leading up to Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s benediction last night were politically fraught, but they didn’t have to be. First, Mitt Romney announced Dolan would be giving the closing benediction at the Republican National Convention. (At the time, I wrote that the move signaled Dolan had chosen sides with the GOP....
  • Was Cardinal Carlo Martini the Last Liberal Catholic Bishop?

VATICAN CITY — With the recent death of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, Catholics who call for church reform on issues such as homosexuality and priestly celibacy have lost one of their last leading lights in the top echelons of the church’s hierarchy. Martini, who died Aug. 31, was a Jesuit and an archbishop of Milan from 1980-2002. More importantly, he was considered for decades the informal leader of “liberals” inside the church. But he has no clear successor in the current crop of cardinals. He had a “rare combination of skills as a scholar, pastor, communicator and holy man,” said...
