David Remnick's piece in The New Yorker, attempting to "understand" Obama's debate defeat, begins thusly: When Barack Obama was a student at Harvard Law School, he was never known as a particularly good debater. In class, if he thought that a fellow student had said something foolish, he showed no forensic bloodlust. He did not go out of his way to defeat someone in argument; instead he tried, always with a certain decorous courtesy, to try to persuade, to reframe his interlocutor’s view, to signal his understanding while disagreeing. Obama became president of the law review—the first African-American to do...

Hospitals who re-admit patients within 30 days after they were discharged will now have to, under an Obamacare provision, pay fines as of October 1, 2012, which could force hospitals to slash programs that help the elderly, the poor, and the chronically ill. According to a study, "about two-thirds of the hospitals serving Medicare patients, or some 2,200 facilities, will be hit with penalties averaging around $125,000 per facility this coming year." This provision was inserted into Obamacare as a cost-cutting measure, but it will force hospitals to give the poor, elderly, and chronically ill substandard care.

Just over 8.5 billion recyclable cans were sold in California last year. The number redeemed for a nickel under California's recycling law: 8.3 billion. That's a return rate of nearly 100%. That kind of success isn't just impressive, it's unbelievable. But the recycling rate for certain plastic containers was even higher: 104%. California's generous recycling redemption program has led to rampant fraud. Crafty entrepreneurs are driving semi-trailers full of cans from Nevada or Arizona, which don't have deposit laws, across the border and transforming their cargo into truckfuls of nickels. In addition, recyclers inside the state are claiming redemptions for...

Despite my disdain for the terminology, I do understand the popular concept and wish to offer a different, hopefully more pastoral perspective on what persons should look for in a church. I begin by confessing my own biases. While...

Pennsylvania state Representative Babette Josephs (D-Philadelphia) declined to lead attendees of a House State Government Committee meeting in a pledge of allegiance. Although the pledge has normally been considered a non-controversial ritual for such meetings, Josephs found it to be highly objectionable. Where do I begin to enumerate the improprieties of injecting these words into our process, Josephs said. Well, first off, this is a state legislature, not a federal legislature. Why should my allegiance, or lack thereof, to the nation be an issue? What relevance does it have to the State of Pennsylvania? Second, the pledge mentions God, Josephs...

America's longest war entered its 12th year Sunday, with the anniversary marked by a Taliban statement claiming that NATO forces are "fleeing Afghanistan" in "humiliation and disgrace". The US led the invasion on October 7, 2001 to topple the Taliban government for harbouring Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. The Taliban were quickly routed, but launched an insurgency that grew in strength over the years until NATO had some 130,000 troops from 50 countries defending the Western-backed government of President Hamid Karzai. The troops have now begun pulling out and...

The biggest item with which Team Obama was able to come out swinging following last week's presidential debate (except for something about Mitt Romney being too "aggressive" and possibly trying to cheat on live television) was playing up their hilariously-contrived claim that Mitt Romney's plan for "$5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy must necessarily raise taxes on the middle class or increase the deficit." a claim with which Robert Samuelson took umbrage: To justify its $5 trillion figure — the estimated tax loss over a decade --- the Obama campaign had to cherry-pick Romney's proposal and the TPC...

...We should not be tempted to politicize our courts. Of course, there is nothing wrong about debating the pros and cons of court rulings, but our judges should not be tempted to decide cases based on politics rather than merits. Decisions must be based on honest interpretation of the law. We should demand impartial judges. We do not want them out raising money for campaigns.

Obama returns to Hollywood for yet another star-studded fundraiser, but this time he'll have to sell his minions on the notion that his disastrous debate performance Wednesday in Denver was a one-time only affair. President Barack Obama returns to Los Angeles Sunday for a star-bedecked celebrity concert and fundraising dinner. In the wake of his Denver debate troubles, however, the long scheduled visit has acquired another, equally urgent purposereassuring his Hollywood supporters that he's fighting to win the race and he's poised for a comeback in the next televised forum with former Gov. Mitt Romney.... Theres also no doubt that...
  • Should Romney Release His College / Grad School Records? (vanity)

Romney has strong scores and little downside to making them public. Without demanding or even asking that Obama release his own records, the press and public would expect equal disclosure from this "most transparent" administration ever. Obama can't comply and this leaves would leave lingering questions. It'd likely be a big part of a day or two news cycle. I don't see any downside. Romney blew the tax return issue out of the water and proved Reid a liar. Seems like this would be a smart follow up. Thoughts?

Bombshell: The Obama State Department withdrew a 16 member special forces team from Benghazi one month before the deadly attacks on 9-11. Lt. Col. Andy Wood was the leader of the 16 member special forces team whose job it was to protect US personnel in Libya. His teams mission ended in August a month before the deadly Al-Qaeda attack on 9-11. A six member mobile security team was also withdrawn around the same time. This was despite the fact that there were over a dozen attacks in the country this year. Lt. Col. Wood was subpoenaed to appear at a...
