David Remnick's piece in The New Yorker, attempting to "understand" Obama's debate defeat, begins thusly: When Barack Obama was a student at Harvard Law School, he was never known as a particularly good debater. In class, if he thought that a fellow student had said something foolish, he showed no forensic bloodlust. He did not go out of his way to defeat someone in argument; instead he tried, always with a certain decorous courtesy, to try to persuade, to reframe his interlocutor’s view, to signal his understanding while disagreeing. Obama became president of the law review—the first African-American to do...

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) Tucked into the U.S. Supreme Courts agenda this fall is a little-known case that could upend your ability to resell everything from your grandmothers antique furniture to your iPhone 4. At issue in Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons is the first-sale doctrine in copyright law, which allows you to buy and then sell things like electronics, books, artwork and furniture, as well as CDs and DVDs, without getting permission from the copyright holder of those products. [snip] Thats being challenged now for products that are made abroad, and if the Supreme Court upholds an appellate court...

Mitt Romney and the empty PODIUM: New Yorker magazine cover pokes fun at Obama's disaster debate (with apologies to Clint Eastwood) We had Clint Eastwood debating an empty chair that represented Barack Obama at the Republican convention. Now, the 'New Yorker' magazine is depicting the President as a debate podium with an empty chair behind it. Next week's cover carries an illustration entitled 'One on One' by Barry Blitt , who explains: 'This image seemed like a proper response to the first Presidential debate but Im not sure I realised how hard it is to caricature furniture.' No one's there:...

Hospitals who re-admit patients within 30 days after they were discharged will now have to, under an Obamacare provision, pay fines as of October 1, 2012, which could force hospitals to slash programs that help the elderly, the poor, and the chronically ill. According to a study, "about two-thirds of the hospitals serving Medicare patients, or some 2,200 facilities, will be hit with penalties averaging around $125,000 per facility this coming year." This provision was inserted into Obamacare as a cost-cutting measure, but it will force hospitals to give the poor, elderly, and chronically ill substandard care.

So, my boyfriend Justins been avoiding a mysterious caller coming from the number (720) 582-8383 for the last week and this morning I told him to just take the call because it was most likely a political survey and Id answer it for him. It was a research company in Denver, Colorado hired by Rahm Emanuel to poll Chicagoans about what they think of him. I had an awful lot of fun taking this survey and telling the pollster how bad a job Rahm is doingand was interested in the amount of emphasis that was given to Rahms dealings with...

I know you've been waiting for someone to ask this. Who, of the 66 bond girls so far (three girls x 22 films)should James Bond have married and settled down with? With all due respect to Tracy--Countessa Teresa Di Vicenzo, "Tracy Draco", Bond's beloved deceased wife, played by Diana Rigg--and the un-named Kissy Suzuki, played by Mie Hama--who should be the real Mrs. Bond? And I'm not talking about considering the acting ability of the actress playing the part, or your personal hate for her. And you need not name only one--nothing unseemly implied here. I know some of you...

ATLANTA The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta had told its parishes, schools and other organizations to end their support for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity over a lingering abortion dispute. That directive from religious leaders came in a memo Monday. It criticized grants given by some Komen officials to Planned Parenthood to support breast screenings. Planned Parenthood also provides abortions, which are against Catholic religious teachings. But thats not the case in Atlanta. The local Komen affiliate told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it has never given funding to Planned Parenthood Southeast. Komen Atlanta remains...

On Thursday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials announced that Sandra Rodriguez Miramontes, 19, has been free on bond since September 21. She reportedly left her 2-year-old nephew trapped in her car for eight hours, resulting in the child's death. Miramontes has been charged with child abuse resulting in death. She was arrested on August 5, after admitting to police that she left the boy, Gabriel Torres, outside the Precious Moments Daycare in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she worked. Despite her illegal status, she was released on only a $500 bond from the Metropolitan Detention Center, where she had been...
  • Man curses Democrats from 120-year-old grave

Attica Nathaniel Grigsby died 120 years ago, but in a cemetery near Attica on the southern Kansas plains, the farmer still is cursing the Democratic Party from the grave. History might have eventually forgotten Grigsbys name and overlooked his tombstone as family ties became more distant, yet Grigsby may always be remembered for his famous parting words an epitaph he made his family promise to engrave if they wanted their inheritance. Through this inscription I wish to enter my dying protest against what is called the Democratic party. I have watched it closely since the days of Jackson...

The Christian Coalition has gained attention over the past few decades with the “voter guides” it distributes to Evangelical Christians. Now, The Catholic Association has just released its own “voter guide” as part of the group’s effort to make “religious freedom” a 2012 campaign issue. The Catholic Association’s voter guide gives Republican Mitt Romney an over-all grade of “A+” and gives Democrat Barack Obama an “F”.The group is critical of the Obama Administration’s push to require Catholic institutions to cover contraceptives in employee health insurance plans. The Romney campaign hopes to capitalize with Catholics in Iowa who may be Democrats or...
  • Rampant recycling fraud is draining California cash [They built it]

Just over 8.5 billion recyclable cans were sold in California last year. The number redeemed for a nickel under California's recycling law: 8.3 billion. That's a return rate of nearly 100%. That kind of success isn't just impressive, it's unbelievable. But the recycling rate for certain plastic containers was even higher: 104%. California's generous recycling redemption program has led to rampant fraud. Crafty entrepreneurs are driving semi-trailers full of cans from Nevada or Arizona, which don't have deposit laws, across the border and transforming their cargo into truckfuls of nickels. In addition, recyclers inside the state are claiming redemptions for...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKJ7Tk0sfbc The pick for this week's feature is "Night Passage". This 1957 western features decorated WWII vets and patriots Jimmy Stewart and Audie Murphy as brothers on the opposite sides of the law. I miss patriotic, pro-American actors like Stewart and Murphy. Also features, Hugh Beaumont(a/k/a Ward Cleaver, one of TV's best on-screen dads) as a railroad tycoon.
