Freedom Works has put together a list of companies that will be laying of employees as a result of President Barack Obama's health care law: Welch Allyn Welch Allyn, a company that manufactures medical diagnostic equipment in central New York, announced in September that they would be laying off 275 employees, or roughly 10% of their workforce over the next three years. One of the major reasons discussed for the layoffs was a proactive response to the Medical Device Tax mandated by the new healthcare law. Dana Holding Corp. Today, November 9, is a pivotal date in American history. It was 70 years ago today where America began a slow but relentless transformation from a free society where the people are sovereign to one where we are tokens of the government. In 1941 Roscoe Filburn harvested wheat he had planted on his own land and he sold a portion but he kept the rest for his own use. This was a problem, because the government had passed a law in 1938 that said you could only grow so much wheat; it planned to prop up prices by limiting supply....

Republican super-strategist Karl Rove tried to shift blame Thursday for his failed spending spree to defeat President Obama, claiming Obama won reelection by “suppressing the vote.” Rove was feeling the heat after his shadowy political committees burned through $100 million on anti-Obama attack ads — to little effect. I can't believe President Obama's luck. First, he received over 99% of the vote in districts where GOP inspectors were illegally removed. Next, he won 100% of the vote in 21 districts in Cleveland. Well, he's gotten another lucky break! Mr. Obama won Wood County in Ohio this year. That's right, Mr. Obama won the majority of Wood County's 108% of registered voters. That's not a typo. In 2012, 106,258 people in Wood County are registered to vote out of an eligible 98,213. But it certainly must all be a coincidence, right? Democrat Daniel Gordon, First Ward Council Member, remarked...

The Bank of France predicts the French economy will shrink by 0.1% in the final quarter of 2012, following a similar decline between July and September, putting the nation back into a technical recession. President Francois Hollande’s government predicts 0.3% growth this year and is counting on a 0.8% advance in 2013, although gloomier forecasts from the European Commission published this week predict France will grow at just half that rate next year. Mrs. Feng’s story spread across international news headlines and provoked outrage by national governments. Well, this is incredibly disturbing. And while I don't think you can place the blame for Romney's defeat on this massive screw up in their GOTV efforts, considering the margin of defeat in OH, FL, VA, and CO, it certainly didn't help. John at Ace of Spades was one of 30,000 volunteers who were to take part in a brand new, high tech program that digitized "strike lists." Basically, the volunteer would be at a polling station and strike off the names of voters as they voted. Then, about half way through the day, they were supposed to send those...

President Barack Obama got so emotional while thanking his campaign staffers in their Chicago headquarters that he began crying. The normally stoic Democrat had to repeatedly wipe away tears during the five-and-a-half minute talk that was caught on video and posted to YouTube. 'I'm really proud of all of you,' he said.

If Election Day is about picking winners, the morning after is for post-mortems. That's when we slice open the losing campaigns, set aside the hundreds of millions of dollars that gush out, and pick apart the cause of death. Why did the Romney campaign fail? Maybe the country is now GOP-proof. That is, maybe a Constitution-guided, free-market, limited-government candidate no longer can "appeal" to the majority of the electorate. It could be that the death knell rang early this year once 67.3 million of us, or one in five Americans, had come to depend on federal assistance, formerly known as...
  • Awkward first press conference for senator-elect Warren

A jittery U.S. senator-elect Elizabeth Warren gave one-sentence answers, ducked questions and even passed one on to Gov. Deval Patrick in an awkward first press conference since the election. Warren spoke for a total of less than four minutes during the 11-minute press conference — the rest was taken up by Patrick and reporters’ questions After being asked her first question — how she’d protect defense spending — Warren was silent as she turned to Patrick. “Defense spending is you,” Patrick prodded Warren.

Laura Olson reports on the happenings in Harrisburg, where Republicans now control all of the branches of government: Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi is trying to gather support to change the state's "winner-takes-all" approach for awarding electoral votes. Instead, he's suggesting that Pennsylvania dole them out based on which candidate wins each of the 18 congressional districts, with the final two going to the contender with the most votes statewide. In other reports, Pileggi sounds awfully sanguine about the effect this would have on PA as a swing state. Why even bring that up? Pennsylvania is typically a closely-divided state,...
  • Becoming European. The Founders’ vision of the people as sovereign lost on Tuesday.

The Progressives won on Tuesday. I don’t mean the people who voted Democrat who call themselves “progressive.” Though they won, too. I mean the Progressives who’ve been waging a century-long effort to transform our American-style government into a European-style state. The words “government” and “state” are often used interchangeably, but they are really different things. According to the Founders’ vision, the people are sovereign and the government belongs to us. Under the European notion of the state, the people are creatures of the state, significant only as parts of the whole. This European version of the state can be nice....
