  • If Economy Is So Good, Why Are Food Stamps At An All-Time High?

The University of Michigan Survey of Consumer Sentiment rose to its highest point since the beginning of Q4 2007. But bear in mind that Q4 2007 is where the housing market fell off a cliff. So, I wouldn’t place too much confidence in this index. After all, US recession probability (blue line) is up. Still, declining mortgage rates, declining gas prices, 171,000 jobs created and a stabilizing housing market led to rising consumer confidence. And the government’s food stamp program (SNAP) rose to 47,102,780 persons as of the end of August, an all-time high! And the increase from July to...

Just had a rather strong and lengthy earthquake here in East Tennessee. The event started with a sudden shake, then a pause, then a lengthy quake of significant magnitude, I would estimate to be in the range of 3 to 4. Is this event connected to shaking in other areas? How is that mountain side in the Azores(?) which is capable of sending a massive tsunami toward the East Coast fairing? Ant word from other freepers out there?

The Washington Post did a terrible job if it was attempting to hide its joy over Four More Years for their superstars the Obamas. "The Reliable Source" gossip column on Thursday repeated its usual pitter-patter love for "style superstar" Michelle and her stylist Meredith Koop: "Four more years! . . . of exquisitely coordinated Obama family fashion. MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited newly re-elected U.S. President Barack Obama to visit Moscow next year.Mr. Putin’s outstretched hand contrasts to the cold shoulder offered President Obama four years ago, at the time of the American’s first election. Did the cuckolded husband of Paula Broadwell send a letter to a New York Times advice column back in July that revealed he knew of her affair with David Petraeus? That intriguing possibility has been raised after canny observers dug out the July 13th edition of Chuck Klosterman's 'The Ethicist' and pointed to extraordinary coincidences between one readers letter and the now scandalous love tryst. Writing about a deepening relationship he knew his wife was having with a 'government executive' whose job 'is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership' the anonymous man offers up what could be considered...

The most anti-Catholic American president ever scooped up the Catholic vote again, winning half of all Catholics. This is down four points from 2008, but it is still an impressive feat after four years of persecuting the Church.Historians will no doubt record the grim irony of his achievement with some wonder. He has now won the Catholic vote twice and boasts an honorary degree in law from one of the Church's most prestigious universities, all while breaking her. He typically re-publishes these thoughts every four years. Perhaps you've seen them before. While I agree with Doug in principle… I have a wholly different rationale for not voting. Given this week's election, I thought I'd tell you about it. The reason I don't vote (and you shouldn't either) is… Our current system of governance is nothing more than tyranny, and it's on track to destroy our country. Like...

WASHINGTON — President Bush signed the biggest rewrite of U.S. bankruptcy law in a quarter century on Wednesday, making it harder for debt-ridden Americans to wipe out their obligations. “Bankruptcy should always be a last resort in our legal system,” Bush said. “If someone does not pay his or her debts the rest of society ends up paying them.” Many debtors will have to work out repayment plans instead of having their obligations erased in bankruptcy court under the law, which will go into effect in six months. The 500-page legislation won final congressional approval last week after being pushed...

Because that’s the way they built them in England, and English expatriates built the US Railroads. Why did the English build them like that? House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) called it "critical" to avoid automatic spending cuts and tax-rate increases that could go into effect if Congress does not agree on a deficit-reduction plan. Boehner's call during the weekly Republican address came after a week in which Republicans and Democrats moved away from focusing on Tuesday's presidential election and toward immigration reform and a deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." Boehner urged Congress to begin action on job creation and deficit reduction.

YOU HAVE TWO YEARS TO LIVE Print E-mail Written by Dr. Jack Wheeler Friday, 09 November 2012 An Open Letter to the Incoming Republican House Members of the 113th Congress Dear GOP House Members and Members-Elect - Congratulations to you all for surviving the absurd calamity of November 6th. You need to know what's in store for you. To put it bluntly, you have two years to live. Politically live as the House Majority, that is. You are going to be demonized and destroyed by the Chicago Gangsters who run the White House and the presstitutes of the CorruptMedia. Your...

Markets Eye 4 Horsemen Of Obama’s Second Term By Rachel Koning BealsNov. 9, 2012, 5:20 p.m. EST CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Whether you exhaled or gasped over the presidential election result, there’s no denying what comes next: A deficit and budget slugfest that will play out against a vulnerable U.S. economic recovery and Europe’s own debt mop-up. That means if you believe that the so-called fiscal cliff, in the shape of a planned $600 billion of federal spending cuts and higher taxes, threatens the growth-stock strategies favored during the election runup, it may be time for a little insurance. President Barack...
  • White House says Christie's people easier to deal with than Cuomo's people

It’s true love between the Democratic president and the Republican governor of New Jersey. More than a week after President Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie toured sections of the Jersey Shore ravaged by Superstorm Sandy, the White House remains “stunned” at how helpful Christie and his team have been and how easy it is to work with them... “The Christie people are so much easier to deal with than the Cuomo people,” a senior administration official said, referring to Gov. Cuomo. “New York wants to do everything alone, but we’re working with Christie really well. It’s weird.” Obama...

Yes, it's bad, but no the country has not (yet) completely rejected us or what we stand for. So let me start by saying the next 4 years will be terrible (if I don't say all this, I will just be attacked as a nutcase). We'll likely end up with a hard-left Supreme Court (although the current court may give us a few good rulings first). The lower federal courts will all be hard-left too. Foreign and military policy will stink - but if we're lucky, nothing fatal or permanent will happen there, and we can hopefully build out of...

House Speaker John A. Boehner, one of the most hard-line members of Congress on immigration, now says that comprehensive reform – which includes a pathway to legalization for the undocumented -- will be a priority in 2013. For years, Boehner, an Ohio Republican who placed some of the House's most controversial immigration hawks in leadership positions on the committee overseeing the issue, said that under no circumstances would Congress consider comprehensive immigration reform. "This issue has been around far too long," Boehner said in an interview Thursday with ABC News' "World News." ''A comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I'm...

I am a Ron White example of “you cannot fix stupid”. Throughout my life I have made many financial mistakes. Academic background does not make you intelligent, just gives you the illusion of intelligence sometimes. I have reached SS retirement age and will have to depend on the government for my retirement funds. I earned it by paying into the system for near 50 years and now I will collect a little for hopefully a few years. All the mistakes I made were made by me, not someone else making my life decisions for me. I cannot understand how some...

As recent survivors of Superstorm Sandy, my family has been focused this week on being thankful for the things we have. As I tell my kids, gratitude is largely a matter of attitude, but it's especially poignant when you see the struggles of our neighbors and friends in Long Beach, south Queens, and Staten Island. Maybe the most frustrating single aspect of this entire Sandy experience has been watching politicians pat each other on the back while they posture over ridiculous consumer protection laws designed to prosecute price gougers. In the aftermath of the storm last week, when I realized...
