...President Obama intends to close "persistent gaps" between whites and minorities in everything from credit scores and homeownership to test scores and graduation rates. His remedy — short of new affirmative-action legislation — is to sue financial companies, schools and employers based on "disparate impact" complaints — a stealthy way to achieve racial preferences, opposed 2 to 1 by Americans. Under this broad interpretation of civil-rights law, virtually any organization can be held liable for race bias if it maintains a policy that negatively impacts one racial group more than another — even if it has no racist motive and...

Barack Obama isn’t exactly famous for his loyalty; he has a history of jettisoning people once they’ve outlived their usefulness to him. This time, it’s the gay community. On Friday, Obama told an MTV audience that he would not fight for gay marriage his second term, intoning that “it would be up to future generations of Americans to implement meaningful reform.” Here’s the kicker; realizing that some states are now endorsing gay marriage, Obama suddenly became a champion of states’ rights, asserting, “For us to try to legislate federally into this area is probably the wrong way to go.” When...

Government programs designed to help the poor have destroyed generations of American families, schools, and culture. One would think that repeated bad economic news and the downgrading of families that inhibit job growth would lead people to find a better solution to help them out of their impoverished condition. Instead, they vote for the same type of politician who blames the wealthy, calls for tax increases, and wonders why poverty goes up, businesses move out, and crime and illegitimacy soar. The following ten cities have a great deal in common. The first thing is their poverty level. The second is...

Drew Rosenberg became a victim of San Francisco's sanctuary-city policies Nov. 16, 2010. The second-year law student was riding his motorcycle in rush-hour traffic, when a car driven by an unlicensed driver made a left turn and hit him. That evening, Don Rosenberg of Westlake Village, Calif., received the phone call every parent dreads. His precious son was dead. Then another nightmare unfolded. As Rosenberg investigated driver Roberto Galo's background, he discovered that San Francisco's sanctuary-city policies have served as an enabler for dangerous drivers. Rosenberg sees his son's death as highly preventable. Five months earlier, San Francisco police stopped...

Some have already been put to rest: Paula Broadwell, the co-author of “All In: The Education of David Petraeus,” has been identified as the woman at the center of the FBI email probe that ultimately toppled him. The newly re-elected US President Barack Obama will need to quickly secure agreement on avoiding the 'fiscal cliff' and raising the debt ceiling following Tuesday's elections, Fitch Ratings says. The economic policy challenge facing the President is to put in place a credible deficit-reduction plan necessary to underpin economic recovery and confidence in the full faith and credit of the US. Resolution of these fiscal policy choices would likely result in the US retaining its 'AAA' status from Fitch. As reflected in the Negative Outlook on the rating, failure to avoid the fiscal cliff and raise the debt ceiling in...

On Tuesday voters in California went the wrong way on three propositions. Voters approved Proposition 30 "temporarily" increasing the state sales tax and income tax on individuals making over $250,000. They voted against Proposition 31 that would allow the governor to cut the budget in fiscal emergencies. They voted against Proposition 32 would prevent unions from making campaign donations via members' dues. Moreover, and worse yet, Democrats picked up two more votes in the state legislature giving them a supermajority, capable of passing any tax hikes they want. There were many factors that hurt Mitt Romney and favored Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election. The Democrats portrayed Romney in the worst light possible; as a wealthy, out of touch millionaire who wanted to return women to the 1800's. The left wing media predictably did everything it could to perpetuate that false caricature. Abandoning core principles can only undermine conservatives' credibility, and liberals will just choose to demonize right-leaning candidates on other issues. Rising carbon dioxide levels at the edge of space are apparently reducing the pull that Earth's atmosphere has on satellites and space junk, researchers say. The findings suggest that manmade increases in carbon dioxide might be having effects on the Earth that are larger than expected, scientists added. In the layers of atmosphere closest to Earth, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, trapping heat from the sun. Rising levels of carbon dioxide due to human activity are leading to global warming of Earth's surface. However, in the highest reaches of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide can actually have a cooling effect....

Ten years ago, a white man from South Africa, one Kim du Toit, wrote an essay titled “Let Africa Sink.” It’s rather famous in the blogosphere in a sort of underground way. His thesis was essentially, we (Western Civilization) cannot save Africa. Life is cheap there. The mortality rate is a result of a perfect storm of natural disaster, human savagery, and unwitting complicity by Europeans that worsens the situation every time they try to help. As a result, death is treated more casually by Africans than by Westerners. I, and I suspect most Africans, am completely inured to reports...

Calif. Gov. Brown: DOJ, Obama should 'respect' state marijuana lawsBy Zack Colman - 11/11/12 10:12 AM ET California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said the federal government should let recently passed marijuana legalization laws stand in Colorado and Washington. “It’s time for the Justice Department to recognize the sovereignty of the states,” Brown said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. “I believe the president and the Department of Justice ought to respect the will of these states.” Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana for recreational use through ballot measures last week. But marijuana is still outlawed at the federal level, which...

Stop the presses! Stop the presses! The Washington Post's Bob Woodward on The Chris Matthews Show Sunday not only called Democrat visions of balancing the budget by raising taxes on the rich a "fantasy," but he also said "there is a way to...raise more revenue and perhaps lower the rates" (video follows with transcript and commentary): Bob Woodward Shocker: There Is a Way to Raise Revenue AND Lower Tax Rates BOB WOODWARD, WASHINGTON POST: But there's a fantasy element, unfortunately, in this, about the tax increases for the wealthy. It probably is sensible, good policy. It’s theology, as you know,...

Another question for Freepers. Specifically, Freepers who are black, Hispanic, and women. Before and since the last election, I keep hearing that the Republican Party needs to do a better job at reaching out towards blacks, Hispanics, and women. Also, the youth vote. My question - what is meant by reaching out? What precisously does the Republican Party need to say to these groups in order to get their votes? Are we suppose to outbid the Leftists?

Somehow, I feel as if I should be apologizing for all of my positive editorials pointing to a Romney victory. But, how can I be expected to apologize for half of the American population who celebrated a GREAT victory of the TAKERS over the MAKERS?

In a world of real time information why is our voting system so arcane? Why for example are election results held until after all voting is over? We have polls that suggest how we are going to vote, but in the 2012 election we learned that there are D+8 and R+2 models that reflect how many Republicans or Democrats are going to to vote. Why don't we provide the real answer in real time.

(snip) “It can move forward things in a good way. I think the tea party is going to have to look at itself,” Noonan added. “It’s been so helpful to the Republican Party in the past. It saved it by not going third party in 2010, helping the Republicans sweep the House. But the tea party style of rage is not one that wins over converts and makes people lean towards them and say, ‘I want to listen to you.’ I think a friendly persuasion has to begin now from the Republican Party to people of the United States.”
