WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has demoted the former head of U.S. Africa Command who was accused of spending thousands of dollars on lavish travel and other unauthorized expenses, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday. Panetta stripped Gen. William "Kip" Ward of a star, which means that he will now retire as a three-star lieutenant general despite arguments from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff against the demotion. Ward also has been ordered also repay the government $82,000. (snip) The demotion comes as retired Army Gen. David Petraeus resigned as CIA director because of an extramarital affair...

For many of the wealthy, 2012 is becoming a good year to sell. They're worried about the "fiscal cliff," which is when tax cuts expire and spending cuts are set to go into effect at the end of the year. Fearing an increase in capital gains and dividend taxes, many of the rich are unloading stocks, businesses and homes before the end of the year. Wealth advisors say that with capital-gains taxes potentially going to 25 percent from 15 percent, and other possible increases in the dividend tax, estate tax and other taxes, many clients are selling now to save...

Mumbai - It’s the last chance of the decade to have a unique, memorable birth date — 12/12/12. And expectant parents are lining up for that moment. Ahead of December 12, 2012, couples are preparing to fix this unique birth date for their newborns. This trend of having muhurat babies – or planned caesarean section on special dates – is getting fashionable among parents, say city gynaecologists who get requests from patients wanting babies on their ‘auspicious’ day. Over the last few years, dates with repetitive numbers all through the the ‘DD-MM-YY’ format are becoming a craze, says doctors. Last...

Canada's enduring contribution to space exploration is the focus of Tuesday's Google doodle. The Canadarm made its operational debut on Nov. 13, 1981, on the Space Shuttle Columbia (mission STS-2). It was retired 30 years later, after its 90th flight, on mission STS-135. "The arm is out and it works beautifully," pilot Richard Truly reported to Mission Control after deploying the "Remote Manipulator System" for the first time. "Its movements are much more flexible than they appeared during training simulations." Images beamed back to terra firma about an hour later showed Canadarm, as described by the Canadian Space Agency, "bent...

On election day there were long lines in some states and many people waited hours to vote.  Even here in Oklahoma, where voting has typically been a fairly quick process, I saw reports of some precincts in the Oklahoma City metro area having more than an hour wait.  I attributed the longer than usual wait to the new voting system selected by the Oklahoma County Election Board which required more time to fill out the ballot than in the past.  Having state questions to vote on just increased the time for voters who weren't prepared in advance since they had to...

The only differences between many American political reporters and prostitutes is that prostitutes understand what type of business they are in and prostitutes provide something of value to the people who pay them. One of reasons Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney is because most political reporters at the Main Stream Media (MSM) are essentially prostitutes. They are partisan Obamista Democrats whose motto is "ours is not to question why. Ours is but to lie and lie." They apparently believe their duty is to make their fellow Democrats look good and the Republicans look bad. If wealthy Republicans want to improve...

Now that the election is over, apparently a lot of people, including some in Kansas, want to secede from the United States. As of Tuesday evening, nearly 4,600 people had signed a petition urging that the state of Kansas withdraw from the United States and create its own government. The online secession petitions, which number about 20 so far, were prompted by the re-election of President Barack Obama. The petitions appear on a White House website called "We the People," which the administration uses to hear from people on what policies they would like to see. If a petition gets...

Carney also emphasized the president’s eagerness to focus on his current number-one priority, a.k.a. jobs, the economy, and the fiscal cliff (which, I’m sure, is perfectly true — no good lingering on security concerns that bring any more attention to that Benghazi disaster, is it?).

The former general was forced to resign as director of the CIA after the FBI discovered that he had been romantically involved with his biographer Paula Broadwell for four years. Obama's foreign policy team hits turbulenceBy JOSH GERSTEIN | 11/13/12 4:21 PM EST President Barack Obama and his aides touted his strengths on foreign policy and national security during the campaign, arguing his accomplishments are so significant that they buttress his case for a second term. Now, just days after his reelection, Obama’s national security team is facing the most dramatic upheaval of his presidency. CIA Director David Petraeus is out because of a sex scandal. The commanding general in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, finds himself ensnared in the same flap. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to call it...

An important update to this report from last week -- it appears that Harry Reid is struggling to cobble together the requisite 51 votes to nuke long-standing minority prerogatives in the Senate:   Democrats don’t have the 51 votes they need in the Senate to change filibuster rules that could make it harder for the GOP minority to wield power in the upper chamber. Lawmakers leading the charge acknowledge they remain short, but express optimism they’ll hit their goal. “I haven’t counted 51 just yet, but we’re working,” said Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), a leading proponent of the so-called constitutional...

Broomfield Township, Mich. -- As police frantically worked to figure out how his fiancée's 24-year-old daughter had vanished, a Michigan pastor who had turned to God to shed his violent past went to his flock with a request to pray for her. But all along, authorities say, he knew the sordid truth about where the young mother was. The pastor, ex-convict John D. White, later confessed to killing the woman to fulfill a fantasy of necrophilia, police said Friday. White drank four or five beers before going to the woman's mobile home and repeatedly striking her head with a mallet...

Both sides in the 7th Congressional District race are lining up lawyers and volunteers to monitor the final counting of provisional and absentee ballots this week. U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre, an eight-term Democrat from Lumberton, is clinging to a razor-thin margin of victory over his Republican challenger, state Sen. David Rouzer of Johnston County. An unofficial tally on Election Day gave McIntyre a 507-vote lead, out of more than 334,000 cast in that race. Since then, more absentee ballots have been counted, dropping McIntyre's unofficial lead to 420 votes, according to the State Board of Elections website Monday.

U.S. Kosovo policy pits National Guard against Christian Serbs resisting rule by U.S.-backed Muslim Albanian mafia rewarded with independence; ethnic cleansing threatens.Always on hand to promote the American-made Muslim state of Kosovo, The Wall St. Journal praised Obama’s praise and rhapsodized in typical Slavophobic tones how in 1999 President Clinton “bypassed the United Nations and sent in the U.S. Air Force…President Bush stood up to Russian bluster and European ambivalence to push for its independence.…though Serbia and Russia have tried to undermine it.” The editorial closed with a straight-faced reference to something that elicits snickers among those in the know:...
