LINCOLN, Neb. — Gov. Dave Heineman announced on Thursday that he has submitted Nebraska's choice to participate in the federal health insurance exchange. Heineman said implementing a federal health care law is the most efficient and cost-effective for Nebraskans. State officials said in a release that the cost of a state exchange to Nebraska taxpayers is $470 million more than a federal exchange. All citizens will still have the option to purchase insurance policies through an exchange regardless of the state's decision, officials said. Heineman said while there were diverse and emotional opinions on this issue, his decision is based...

Hostess is going to shut their doors for good if the striking workers throughout the country don’t come back to work by 5 p.m. today. The Hostess Company will start liquidation proceedings through bankruptcy as early as tomorrow, with the goal of the company completely shutting down by Nov. 20, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012. If the striking workers don’t agree to come back to work by 5 p.m. this evening, then CEO Gregory Rayburn said they will proceed with the shut-down. Rayburn said: “We don’t have the financial wherewithal, nor the manpower, to...

Inside sources close to Rick Santorum are saying the former Pennsylvania senator and 2012 GOP contender is already organizing for a run in 2016. On the other side of the aisle, investor Warren Buffett is already touting his choice to succeed President Obama in the White House. A leading evangelical leader who is close to Santorum and asked not to be identified, told The Christian Post on Wednesday that Santorum is "organizing and making all the necessary preparations" for another run in the 2016 Republican primary. "Rick's getting ready organized and is not going to be behind the eight-ball when...

  • Key Points on Health Insurance Exchanges (Tell your governor to just say no!)

As policymakers in Arizona decide whether or not to establish health insurance exchange, they should keep several key points in mind. The exchange will be Arizona-funded, not Arizona-run. The federal government will be in complete control of the exchange—from who can participate to what plans they can offer and prices they can charge. The federal legislation clearly states, “An Exchange may not establish rules that conflict with or prevent the application of regulations promulgated by the Secretary [of Health and Human Services].” The only part Arizona will play is picking up the tab. While we don’t know exactly how much...

AFP - Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi rejected on Thursday what he called Israel's aggression in Gaza, saying it threatened to destabilise the region, while Cairo called on the US to stop Israel's strikes. "The Israelis must understand that we do not accept this aggression, which could lead to instability in the region," Morsi said in televised remarks, as Israeli air forces pummelled Gaza and militants fired rockets back in a deadly tit for tat. Egypt's Islamist administration, which has close ties with Gaza's ruling Hamas movement, recalled its ambassador on Wednesday in protest at the Israeli operation, which began with...

Barely had the counting ceased in last week’s presidential election when the news took a somber turn. Two of the next day’s headlines read “Back to Work, Looming Fiscal Crisis Greets Obama” and my favorite, “America has Sown the Seeds of Its Own Demise.” Politicians either celebrated or decried the results, but regardless of party affiliation most warned of formidable challenges and a perilous future. How did it come to pass that even the resolution of a contested election brings almost zero relief from the relentless focus on problems and threats? How did a country that for much of its...

ITW Consumer has warned the state of Florida of 73 layoffs and the closure of their Riviera Beach facility earlier this year. Illinois Tool Works, ITW's parent company, announced a change in strategies and its decision to phase out operations in Florida earlier this year, according to the Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification notice filed with the state on Wednesday. ITW's functions will be relocated to Ohio and Connecticut. The company stated that it plans to cease ITW Consumer operations by the end of February. The first run of separations were effective at the end of August and October. Additional...

One of the stranger aspects of the strangest scandal of the year is a little less murky with the discovery of a photo of FBI Special Agent Frederick W. Humphries, shirtless, with his arms around two shirtless dummies. Humphries reportedly sent the photo to dozens of friends and acquaintances, the Seattle Times reported, including Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, one of the women at the center of the scandal that led to the resignation of Gen. David Petraeus as director of the CIA last week. The photo, also sent to a Seattle Times reporter in 2010, was mean to be "a...

Full time work is about to get scarcer. The reason? By hiring part-time workers who put in less than 30 hours per week, employers can avoid a mandate dictated by the new health reform law: either provide expensive health insurance or pay a fine equal to $2,000 per worker. Avoiding the mandate becomes even more attractive for low-wage employees, since they can get highly subsidized insurance in the newly created health insurance exchanges. Clearly the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) is a major factor holding back economic recovery. But it’s not alone. Other public policies enacted during the Obama administration’s first...

Orphaned after their mother died while protecting them from a coyote, four starving kittens were rescued and nursed back to health by the CATS Cradle Shelter in Fargo, N.D. Now all four kittens have been adopted together and are learning their way around their new home.   Found beside their mother’s body in July, the kittens were just 4 weeks old and in poor condition. -snip- During their recovery, the coyote kittens found new friends in foster mom Lori Lang and her English sheepdog, Romeo, who "stepped up to surrogate parent the little orphans."   And it looks like they’ve...

A friend of mine finds herself in the unenviable position of needing to put her dog up for adoption. The dog is a 1-2 year old chihuahua mix which requires some obedience training and is not housebroken (she has had several accidents at the owner's residence, but is starting to use the doggy door, so perhaps "housebreaking in progress" is more accurate) She is good with adults; her behavior towards children is unknown; aggressive towards other chihuahua in household but gets along well with another dog (which is not a chihuahua) in the same household. She is intact (is scheduled...

MeatPoultry reports that the firm announced the closure this past November. Layoffs are expected to begin at the Portsmouth plant in January, and the facility will be closed by the end of March 2013. Jill Kelley, the Tampa socialite who reported anonymous emails from CIA director David Petraeus' mistress Paula Broadwell, has made her way into some high social circles. Angelette Aviles, a member of the Hispanic Leadership Council of the Florida Republican party, tweeted out this photo of Kelley with freshman Florida Senator Marco Rubio at an undated fundraiser. The fundraiser was likely from the Senator's run in 2010, but could also be from a fundraiser since then. Aviles tweets that Kelley didn't contribute at the fundraiser, and she didn't greet people there. In fact, she wasn't even invited. In the last couple of years, shale exploration and production has sparked a petrochemical renaissance in the United States which has not gone unnoticed. With over 50 new petrochemical projects planned in the United States, the country is on track to become the world's top gas producer in 2014. According to the U.S. Energy Department, the United States will produce 11.4 million barrels a day of oil and liquid hydrocarbons next year, almost as much as Saudi Arabia. Countries worldwide are looking to the United States and evaluating their potential for shale exploration success. However shale drilling relies on hydraulic...

Paula Broadwell was a rising star who seemed destined for a sparkling career in foreign policy. A West Point graduate who excelled in triathlons, she was pursuing a doctorate at Harvard University and had found a mentor in Gen. David H. Petraeus, an iconic U.S. military leader. But in 2007, Broadwell was asked to leave the doctoral program at Harvard, where she had first met Petraeus a year earlier, because her course work didn’t meet its demanding standards, according to people familiar with what happened there.

Starting next fall, students at UNC-Chapel Hill will be able to live in dorm suites and apartments with roommates of the opposite gender. The UNC-CH Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed “gender-neutral” housing after a yearlong push by students who said the move was necessary to give gay, lesbian and transgender students a place free of harassment. Chancellor Holden Thorp said the housing option would be implemented next fall. Students will be able to apply for the option of choosing roommates of either gender in campus dorm suites and apartments. The university already has coed dorms but students of the opposite...
