I wasn’t a Christian when I became pro-life. I was kind of anti-Christian. I was converted on the basis of science, reason, ethics, and human rights. A year later, I was confirmed in the Catholic Church. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. But I also don’t think one has to be a Christian to be pro-life. I do, however, believe that one has to be pro-life to be a Christian. Why? Well, because, duh. I mean, is it really necessary to go into deep biblical study over this issue? Is it necessary to quote Exodus 21:22-23, or Psalm 139:13-15, or...

Have you been enjoying your Thanksgiving turkey leftovers? Do you have a preference for the white meat? If you do, then racism could explain why you prefer the white meat to the dark meat. In an article worthy of The Onion but published in all seriousness in Slate, writer Ron Rosenbaum plumbs the depths of absolute ridiculousness to explain his white meat racism theory. First he details why white meat is supposedly so horrible:

It is the third straight year that the government has seized websites on "Cyber Monday" — the marketing term for the Monday after Thanksgiving, when many online retailers offer steep discounts and promotions. NYPD Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly took President Barack Obama to task Sunday for failing to speak out against the wave of violence that's been battering the Windy City since this summer. If federal tax cuts that are under review are not extended, Michigan residents could end up paying the equivalent of double their state income tax rate, according to an analysis by the Tax Foundation. The Tax Foundation looked at the alternative minimum tax (which includes the child tax credit), the Bush tax cuts (which refers to changes to the tax codes that lowered income tax rates) and the 2 percent tax cut to employee-side social security payroll taxes that all expire at the end of the year. The tax cuts are part of the so-called “fiscal cliff” debate. Michigan residents...

The court — with the blessing of the Obama administration — revived a suit filed by Liberty University. Do you depend on your computer for your living? If so, I'm sure you've thought long and hard about which hardware and software to use. I'd like to explain why I use generic "white boxes" running open source software. These give me a platform I rely on for 100% availability. They also provide a low-cost solution with excellent security and privacy. People's requirements vary, so what I use may not be the best choice for you. I'm a support person for databases and operating systems. I also do consulting that involves research, presenting, and writing. I use my own computers...
  • Approaching Crunch Time on the Student Loan Debacle (About to go the way of subprime mortgage mess)

For a number of years now, a number of critics of the American system of higher education have rightly insisted that there is a "bubble" in the system, with more and more students running up loans in amounts they will find difficult to pay back. This bubble has been fueled by the federal government's lavish subsidization of the student loan program (which was nationalized four years ago), in a way similar to how the housing bubble was fueled by government agencies pushing subprime mortgages. This extensive government largess has produced a number of unintended -- though not necessarily unforeseeable --...

The FBI recently released its annual Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted report. According to the FBI webpage: “The FBI publishes Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted each year to provide information about officers who were killed, feloniously or accidentally, and those officers who were assaulted while performing their duties.” I find the report to be a treasure trove of information about cop-killing violent criminals. It should be mandatory reading for every police officer. Armed citizens will also find the information useful as the criminals who prey on cops also regularly attack citizens in a similar manner. The report is...

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has had quite a week. He helped broker a cease-fire between his Hamas ally and Israel to the acclaim of the international community as well as the United States and his new friend President Obama. He followed that triumph up by issuing new decrees that effectively give him dictatorial powers over Egypt. In less than year in office, Morsi has amassed as much power as Hosni Mubarak had in his time in office as the country’s strongman and he has done it while getting closer to the United States rather than having his Islamist regime being...

  • Jeb Bush buzz grows over possible 2016 run

After a year in which Republicans had precious little for which to be thankful, perhaps it's not surprising that party leaders and the faithful spent a good chunk of the long Thanksgiving weekend obsessing instead over 2016 – specifically the possibility of a presidential run by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Even on the heels of November’s epic losses, the often-beleaguered Massachusetts GOP is heading into anticipated high-profile races with two power players — U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and former gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker — setting up a potential GOP standoff over who will lead the embattled party in upcoming election showdowns. “I think that Republicans are depressed with the outcome of the last election, but the good news is we have really strong candidates,” said Richard Tisei, a Wakefield Republican who shared the ticket with Baker in the last gubernatorial election and narrowly lost against U.S. Rep. John Tierney this...

Photos: Classic burger and hot dog joints of North JerseyThey are remnants of an earlier, pre-fast-food era, places with names like Skip's or Bud's, where Dad always parked the station wagon for the family to take a break from a long trip. Summer is road trip season, and it's always a treat to stumble upon some iconic roadside eatery, famous with the locals for its burgers, fries, hot dogs and milkshakes – the foods that just seem to taste better ordered from a takeout window. Despite the success of Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," in which Guy Fieri travels...
