  • ‘Fiscal cliff’ negotiations stall — again — on question of raising tax rates (Good!)

The talks between President Obama and congressional Republicans to avoid looming tax hikes and steep spending cuts regressed Monday to the same old sticking point — raising taxes on wealthier Americans. Although both sides had expressed optimism before Thanksgiving that they would reach a deal to prevent a serious blow to the economy in January, the post-holiday pronouncements from the White House showed a re-emphasis on the president’s position that tax rates must rise for families earning more than $250,000 per year. And some top Republican lawmakers again insisted they won’t raise tax rates on anyone, arguing that enough revenue...

Let the Blood Games continue. Only weeks after election 2012 and years before election 2016, in a routine interview, a glossy pop magazine popped Florida Senator Marco Rubio with an oddball question: How old do you think the earth is? Rubio responded a bit clumsily and noncommittally. Smelling blood and opportunity, the wolf pack bared fangs and chased. Their game is either to force Rubio to affirm a personal belief the earth is 4.5 billion years old—disturbing some of his religious supporters--or to mock and stigmatize him and others who could harbor any delusional uncertainty—damaging him with a different part...

Benito rarely emerges from the sushi bar where he works preparing fish and meat, and making deliveries on a small white motorbike, before the middle of the night. He considers ten, eleven or even twelve hours of work to be a successful evening, yielding good money to send back to his parents and his three-year-old daughter in Mexico. “The more we work the more they pay us,” Benito said. “Most of it goes back to Mexico so that my family can eat.” But Benito, who asked us not use his last name, has a problem. The Astounding Story Of How A Car Worth $600 Racked Up Over $100,000 In Parking Tickets It might just be a world record. At the very least one particular car has set a City of Chicago record for receiving the most parking violations ever and accumulating the most parking fines in the city's history. The city claims Jennifer Fitzgerald owes over $100,000 in parking tickets. And no, that's not a typo or a few misplaced zeros on the end. The amount is actually 105,761 dollars and 80 cents to be precise. This is the total mind boggling debt the City...

Replacing an aging furnace could cost homeowners thousands of dollars more after May 1, when new federal energy efficiency standards take effect for northern states, including New Jersey. The new energy-efficient natural gas furnaces aren’t that much more expensive themselves, but they must be vented directly to an outside wall rather than through the chimney, which can increase installation costs dramatically, home heating contractors say. (snip) Under the Department of Energy rules, gas furnaces installed after May 1 must be at least 90 percent efficient, compared with the current 78 percent efficient criterion. Similar improvements in energy efficiency are set...

The Supreme Court today ordered a federal appeals court to take a new look at the controversial Obamacare law and whether it unconstitutionally forces taxpayers to fund abortions and contraception, violating religious freedoms. The high court ordered the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to consider the case of Liberty University, a Christian college that contends ObamaÂ’s health care law violates the schoolÂ’s religious freedoms. A federal judge rejected the case and the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the lawsuit was premature but did not deal with the main points the lawsuit brought up.When the Supreme Court upheld the...

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has agreed to pull back decrees announced last Thursday granting himself sweeping new powers. The Islamist leader originally told a panel of Egypt's top judges that he would not change his stance on the edicts, insisting that he was acting within his rights. But according to a report by a television network allied with the Muslim Brotherhood, an agreement worked out with top judicial authorities was reached late Monday. Why Barack H. Obama will be the last President of the “United” States By John Gonzales Consider the current rifts in our American society. After four years of this administration’s divisive rhetoric and policies, we have been divided - then subdivided - into a disparate consortium of “voting” blocks. We are a society that identifies its members by political party, race, income brackets, social and religious affiliations, then again: pro-life, pro-choice, the 47%, the dependant class, the wealthy, millionaires (defined by this administration as anyone making more than $250,000 annually), social conservatives clinging to their guns and bibles, liberals, Christians,...

If everyone in America had read Stephen Moore's new book, "Who's The Fairest of Them All?", Barack Obama would have lost the election in a landslide. The point here is not to say, "Where was Stephen Moore when we needed him?" A more apt question might be, "Where was the whole economics profession when we needed them?" Where were the media? For that matter, where were the Republicans? Since "Who's The Fairest of Them All?" was published in October, there was little chance that it would affect this year's election. Somewhere deep in the bowels of the world’s Western central banks lie vaults holding gargantuan piles of physical gold bars… or at least that’s what they all claim. The gold bars are part of their respective foreign currency reserves, which include all the usual fiat currencies like the dollar, the pound, the yen and the euro. Collectively, the governments/central banks of the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Switzerland, Eurozone and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are believed to hold an impressive 23,349 tonnes of gold in their respective reserves, representing more than $1.3 trillion at today’s gold price. Employees were notified of the layoffs Monday, and the actual reductions will take place over the next few weeks. The layoffs announced Monday are on top of 55 layoffs at the medical device manufacturing plant in July, said Scott Lowry, C.R. They are crossing a hammer and a wrench in a similiar fashion as that of a hammer and sickle. Probabaly just my warped mind, but was curious if anyone else was finding the same? I took a screen shot of what I saw, but can't figure out how to post it, as it's a Flash based ad. Anyway...I'm posting this in the Vanity section of...
  • The “Collaborators” Hamas Executed Were Actually Al Qaeda Rivals

Hamas’ brutal execution of a number of men who it claimed were Israeli collaborators led to a lot of headlines complete with photos of bodies being dragged around behind motorcycles. But in the Muslim world, it’s important to understand context, not just content, and everyone lies all the time. Collaborators are often executed in the West Bank and Gaza, however these people are rarely agents of Israel. Israeli intelligence is pretty good and not that easy to penetrate. Israel doesn’t rely as much on local informants anymore and more on intercepted communications. So who are the

With our political leaders locked in a fiscal struggle that threatens to throw the economy off a so-called cliff and into recession, you might be wondering how we got to this place. Remember that this supposed fiscal cliff is the direct result of two contradictory impulses in American life: Greed and guilt. Greed for low taxes, a strong military, a strong safety net and lots of government spending for everyone. And guilt that we weren’t paying our way. Read “Stop calling it a ‘fiscal cliff’” All of us (or almost all) had a role in this melodrama, either benefiting from...

The Gambino crime family allegedly is strengthening its ties to the old country, and the supposed move may prove its undoing under a recently issued Executive Order by President Barack Obama which authorizes the Treasury Department to designate transnational crime groups in order to freeze their U.S. assets and ban American citizens and companies from conducting business with them. The Treasury Department through its Office of Foreign Assets Control was granted the authority to take enforcement action against designated transnational crime groups under Executive Order 13581 issued on July 24, 2011 pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, and...

It’s been 20 years since I sat across a conference table from the attorney representing Robert Alton Harris, a double-murderer who had spent 13 years on California’s Death Row. The attorney hoped to make the case that, despite his crimes, Harris should be spared his scheduled date with the executioner. He related that the convicted murderer was born with fetal alcohol syndrome. That he was neglected as a child. That he was abused as an adolescent. I’m sorry, I told the attorney. Your client killed two boys. He deserves to pay the forfeit for taking innocent lives. And not long...

Here we go again, Obama Rapture Redux: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyWIcmBYUBcAmazing. Meanwhile Obama and company are all over the airwaves calling for tax hikes on the rich because a few billion will fix everything, which is complete baloney: I’m simply staggered at the number of things that raising taxes on the rich is now supposed to fix. A partial list: Our crumbling roads, our cracked bridges, our decaying electrical grid, our failing schools, our bankrupt entitlements, our reliance on fossil fuels, and our over-extended public pensions. But why will billions more dollars succeed when trillions of dollars have failed? We pour more money...
  • A Real Threat To America

There is a large group of radicals in the Middle East who have hijacked a religious community and are threatening the future of their people. Suicide bombers don’t care about the effects of their actions on others. They believe that their awful actions will be rewarded afterwards by their almighty ruler, Allah. They believe they will be taken to paradise. They are taught from a very young age that Americans are the real evil in the world, and that to kill them is a noble and Godly act. In the United States, we have suicide voters. These radical progressives and...

Chris Stamp, one of the original managers of The Who, has died of cancer at the age of 70. Band member Roger Daltrey paid tribute to him on stage in Detroit on Saturday. He described Stamp as a man "without whom we wouldn't be the band we were", according to Billboard magazine. Stamp co-founded the group's Track Records label. He co-managed The Who with Kit Lambert and also helped to launch the career of Jimi Hendrix. Daltrey told the audience at Joe Louis arena that Stamp "flew into the universe on a pair of rainbow wings". "Chris, we can never...

Propark America, which operates 31 parking garages and lots around New Haven, is laying off 186 employees in January. The Hartford-based company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice Nov. 20 with the Connecticut Department of Labor. The notice indicates that the layoffs are scheduled to begin on Jan. 20 and does not indicate whether all of the employees are being laid off at once. The WARN Act is a federal law requiring employers of 100 or more full-time workers to give 60 days advance notice of a plant closing or mass layoff...

The report released Monday says 32-year-old Edward Archbold of West Palm Beach died as a result of "asphyxia due to choking and aspiration of gastric contents." Lab tests for drugs came back negative. The death has been ruled an accident.
