Former Kadima chair Tzipi Livni held a news conference at 12:00 noon to announce that she is running for the 19th Knesset at the helm of an independent party, "The Movement – Headed by Tzipi Livni." Livni met Monday with another former Kadima chair, Ehud Olmert, and informed him of her decision. According to a Maagar Mochot poll published Thursday, a list headed by Livni would garner nine Knesset seats and "steal" seats from Labor, which would get only 19, and Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid (Future) party, which would get 4 seats. Lapid has offered Livni the Number Two position...

It is never too early to think ahead about the Presidential Election of 2016, and as pundits start debating and arguing about potential candidacies for President, it turns out that several states could witness a battle for the nomination among their own office holders, as witness the following: New York–Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand–all Democrats Florida—Former Governor Jeb Bush, Governor Rick Scott, and Senator Marco Rubio–all Republicans. Virginia—Governor Bob McDonnell, Republican, and Senator Mark Warner, Democrat. Massachusetts—Governor Deval Patrick and Senator Elizabeth Warren–both Democrats. A study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention shows abortion increases the risk of breast cancer for women. C. Yanhua of the First Peoples’ Hospital of Kunming in Yunnan province and his colleagues found the abortion-breast cancer association after comparing data from 263 cases of breast cancer and 457 controls without the disease. Their analysis covers the years 2009-2011. The authors examined information on disease diagnosis, demographics, medical history, and reproductive characteristics of the patients involved and also looked at short menstrual cycle, old age at first live birth, never breastfeeding, history of oral contraceptive use, postmenopausal status...

Two dozen Americans in Israel are suing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for negligence in allowing the United States to fund the Palestinian Authority, which used money for terror. The suit was filed in a federal U.S. court in Washington by the Israel Law Center (Shurat HaDin), which has revolutionized the war against terror through “lawfare,” winning colossal lawsuits against terrorist organizations and banks that handle their funds. The Federal suit alleges that the U.S. State Department violated the Anti-Terrorism Act, and abandoned Congressional safeguards, transparency and reporting requirements. Clinton allegedly ignored congressional safeguards and transparency requirements attached to...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud faction shifted further to the right on Monday, with the more moderate members of the ruling party faring poorly in a primary vote ahead of January elections. The two-day poll, extended from Sunday after technical failures in the computerised system caused significant delays, ended on Monday night with nearly 60 percent of the Likud's 123,000 members casting their vote. Unofficial results published on Israeli media showed that the ballot proved the strength of the settler lobby, led by Moshe Feiglin, who has said that Likud needed to reassure the right. With the Republican Party openly discussing immigration reform and changing positions on immigration as a party in order to attract Hispanic voters, I thought this would be a good time to review some immigration laws that are already enacted. The General Law on Population enacted in April 2000 mandates that federal, local and municipal police cooperate with federal immigration authorities in the arrest of illegal immigrants.  Illegal immigration is a felony, punishable by up to two years in prison.  Deported immigrants who are deported and attempt to reenter the country are subject to ten years in prison.  Violation of your visa is punishable...

The recent election loss at a time when every economic indicator over the previous four years should have catapulted Romney to victory, started me to seriously think; not think about Romney’s failures, not about what the conservative movement should have done or about two parties which were once upon a time closer at their furthest distance than they were even in FDR’s time (and that says a lot). In fact other than 1860 we have never been so dissimilar and as a people, so divided. A thought often wonders about its origin as much as what it is about; something...

It's a ridiculous question of utter irrelevance to the status of the country and whether Marco Rubio would be a good president. Rubio's answer was excellent: "I'm not a scientist, man. The US Supreme Court on Monday set the stage for further litigation over the constitutionality of President Obama’s health-care reform law. In a somewhat unusual maneuver, the high court agreed to send one of several cases challenging the Affordable Care Act (ACA) back to a federal appeals court to consider the underlying merits of the lawsuit – including whether the measure violates religious freedom. In late June, the Supreme Court voted 5 to 4 to uphold the ACA as a valid exercise of Congress’s taxing authority. The ruling forced the dismissal of a handful of other cases challenging the reform...

Nov 27 (Reuters) - Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush soared to rock star status in the education world on the strength of a chart. A simple graph, it tracked fourth-grade reading scores. In 1998, when Bush was elected governor, Florida kids scored far below the national average. By the end of his second term, in 2007, they were far ahead, with especially impressive gains for low-income and minority students. Those results earned Bush bipartisan acclaim. As he convenes a star-studded policy summit this week in Washington, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential education reformers in the...

On the sidelines of the Brussels budget summit on November 22 and 23, Eurozone leaders approved the appointment of Luxembourgian Yves Mersch to the board of the European Central Bank. But he was elected despite the European parliament voting against him, a move which highlights the EU's dysfunctional nature. Everyone agrees that Europe suffers from a democratic deficit and a lack of legitimacy which alienate its citizens. That is everyone except for the heads of Eurozone governments, who, notwithstanding a European parliament vote to the contrary, quietly appointed Luxembourg’s central bank governor, Yves Mersch, to the board of the ECB...

Today marks the bicentennial of the culminating catastrophe that befell the Grande Armée as it retreated from Russia. This past weekend one of the French Emperor's descendants, Charles Napoleon, traveled to Minsk in Belarus to attend ceremonies commemorating the disaster at the nearby Beresina River crossing, where thousands died -- many by drowning -- in a final, panicked rout in freezing weather. Bonaparte had marched deep into Russia with nearly half a million soldiers; he returned with less than 25,000. Given that Napoleon was the great captain of his time -- perhaps of all time -- and that his armies...

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an appeal of a controversial Illinois law prohibiting people from recording police officers on the job. By passing on the issue, the justices left in place a federal appeals court ruling that found that the state's anti-eavesdropping law violates free-speech rights when used against people who audiotape police officers. A temporary injunction issued after that June ruling effectively bars Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez from prosecuting anyone under the current statute. Grantham believes the world has undergone a permanent "paradigm shift" in which the number of people on Earth has finally and permanently outstripped the planet's ability to support us. The phenomenon of ever-more humans using a finite supply of natural resources cannot continue forever, Grantham says--and the prices of metals, hydrocarbons (oil), and food are now beginning to reflect that. To conservatives like me, the following proposal for raising taxes on Hollywood celebrities goes against my DNA. However, two facts are indisputable: (1) Hollywood is perhaps Obama's biggest booster club, giving him donations in kind and in dollars, and (2) Congress' stated goal is to raise taxes on the wealthy, although they will actually raise them on everyone. Therefore, with a bit of irony in mind, I propose the following for debate. After listening to Democrats argue that the wealthy aren’t paying their fair share of taxes, it’s time for Americans to take an empirical view of the massive wealth...

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A new analysis shows gun-related violence has actually fallen steadily in Virginia since 2006, despite the record number of firearm sales. VCU professor Thomas Baker compared state crime data for 2006 through 2011 with gun dealer sales estimated by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The research shows the number of guns purchased soared to 73% in the six year period, while gun related crimes fell 24%. Baker says the comparisons seem to contradict the premise that guns lead to more crime. Copyright 2012 WWBT NBC12.

His name is Oscar Castellanos, and the fifth-grader is getting extra help from his father because he's having trouble adjusting to his new school. The student enrolled at Leona Vicario Elementary in the town of Cananea is technically a foreigner in his father's land. Oscar was born in Arizona and is a U.S. citizen. He recites the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance by memory without hesitation. His English accent is that of a boy raised in the American Southwest. Oscar's family moved back...

Yes, there are far more pressing matters in the world than the escapades of the fictional 007, but, hey, if the Vatican's official newspaper can devote five articles to the latest James Bond flick, I don't feel too guilty devoting one measly column to it. I've always had an aversion to the James Bond character, and I suppose it has more to do with the fact that he's a glorified womanizing/fornicating spy who will kill at the drop of a hat versus a chaste spy who will "merely injure" at the drop of a hat. To me, the Bond movies'...

In 1996, Kathryn Lehman was a soon-to-be married lawyer working for Republicans in the House of Representatives. One of her major accomplishments: helping to write the law that bans federal recognition of same-sex marriages. Today, Ms. Lehman, 53, no longer has a husband, and no longer identifies as straight. And she is a lobbyist for Freedom to Marry, which is devoted to overturning the very law she helped write, the Defense of Marriage Act. But Ms. Lehman is still a fervent Republican. “I’m trying to break the stereotype that all gays and lesbians, especially lesbians, are Democrats,” she said. Although...

Former ACORN employee and whistleblower Anita Moncrief said ACORN is far from dead and is still “colluding” and “working with” the President Barack Obama's Department of Justice. Moncrief appeared with Conservative commentator David Webb in a one-hour special about the “District of Corruption” movie on FOX News’ “Hannity.” She specifically discussed how community organizing groups on the left put pressure on institutions like banks to get them to relent to their “equal outcomes” agenda. Moncrief said ACORN would help people report food stamps and other “under-the-table” incomes as income to get subprime mortgages that eventually caused the housing market to...

Sunday, Solemnity of Christ the King, 25 November 2012, Beijing, China. Only recently the auxiliary bishop of Shanghai bravely announced from the pulpit of Saint Ignatius cathedral that he would no longer subject himself to the leadership of China’s Catholic Patriotic Association. Soon after, he was “escorted” to the Sheshan Catholic Seminary, where is presently on a forced “spiritual retreat” to “reconsider” his affiliation. In addition, the seminary has been closed “until further notice.” China’s Catholics are keenly aware of their situation, and they are also keenly aware of how to respond. Sitting in the pews during 10:00 am Mass...

My goodness, I got a tingle up my leg just now, listening to Rand Paul vigorously advocate for cutting taxes to grow the economy at 4% or greater. And he also pushed back on the dem premise that only by raising taxes can we cut the deficit. On the contrary, he strongly insisted that the Bush tax rates resulted in INCREASED revenues to the federal government for years. He also confirmed that he would not vote to raise ANY taxes, and did not buy into Greta's query about the whole idea of cutting deductions to raise revenue either. This was...

This past summer, as the Syrian economy began to unravel and the military pressed hard against an armed rebellion, a Syrian government plane ferried what flight records describe as more than 200 tons of “bank notes” from Moscow. The records of overflight requests were obtained by ProPublica. The flights occurred during a period of escalating violence in a conflict that has left tens of thousands of people dead since fighting broke out in March 2011. The regime of Bashar al-Assad is increasingly in need of cash to stay afloat and continue financing the military’s efforts to crush the uprising.
