  • Chambliss May be GOP's Ultimate Test Case

Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., was on cruise control to win a 2014 bid for re-election until he made a comment on a station in Macon, Ga., that ignited a political firestorm. In essence, Chambliss hedged on a prior pledge never to raise taxes, stating that in light of the "fiscal cliff" the country is facing, his devotion to the nation was more important than a 20-year-old statement or pledge. That's when the fireworks started. The first to seize on the comment was tax-fighting lobbyist Grover Norquist, who suggested that voters in the Peach State should hold Chambliss to...
  • ‘No’ to Palestinian Statehood

The U.N. General Assembly is expected to vote today on a proposal to elevate the status of the Palestinian Authority. The PA is currently a permanent-observer “entity.” It is seeking to become a permanent-observer “non-member state.” Last year, the Obama administration blocked the PA’s bid for full U.N. membership by threatening to use the U.S.’s Security Council veto, asserting that “efforts to delegitimize Israel will end in failure. Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won’t create an independent state.” A unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood would undermine all internationally accepted frameworks for peace, including U.N....

It's no accident that the Palestinian Authority is bringing its “case” to the United Nations on November 29 – a day that has for 65 years been identified with the State of Israel. “It's very typical of the PA to choose the day that Israel was recognized as a state by the UN as the date for their state's recognition,” said one historian. “The PA has tried to co-opt so many Jewish and Israeli symbols in the past, and the co-opting of November 29 fits right in with that,” said Moshe Siebel, a history afficianado. The 29th of November is...
  • Spending cuts tied to loophole closings; paying back the federal debt tied to rate increases?

Not saying that I support the second part, but I'm tossing that into the mix just to see what people think... If 1A (by law) had to precede 1B (1A triggered 1B), with the two inextricably tied together by law - 1A being spending cuts and 1B being the closing of tax loopholes - would Dems go for it? Secondly, would Dems, banks and the Federal Reserve --- would they be in favor of 2A preceding 2B (the two also being tied together by law): 2A being ongoing payments on the principal (The PRINCIPAL) of the federal debt outstanding and...
  • Third-Quarter GDP Growth Revised Upward to 2.7% [New Normal: This anemic number is "good news"]

The U.S. economy expanded at its fastest pace in nearly three years in the third quarter as stronger inventory and export gains caused the government to revise its growth reading higher. The nation's gross domestic product—he broadest measure of goods and services produced in the U.S.—advanced at an annual rate of 2.7% from July through September, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The revised figure is up from the previously reported 2.0% gain and is the best three-month increase since the final quarter of 2009. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires expected growth to be revised to a 2.8% rate.

What do you call a leader of a theocratic and cultish movement with a deep and clear disdain for democracy who suddenly assumes dictatorial powers? A “moderate,” of course.*snip*Apparently, “moderation” in the Middle East has been defined down to not wanting to wage war on Israel right now. On Monday, in response to protests, Morsi met with members of the judiciary. Some reports say he walked back his declaration of supremacy, but that is far from clear. He reaffirmed that the courts cannot veto the constitution being written by Morsi’s Islamist pets. Is there any doubt that the constitution will...

According to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, 73 percent of Democrats and 63 percent of independents -- and even 39 percent of Republicans -- now favor raising taxes on those making $250,000 or more a year. So give the people want they want. As it is, the GOP is engaged in an unwinnable scrum with Barack Obama, a man chasing the gold-plated Holy Grail of hiking top marginal tax rates on the rich and small businesses -- bringing in, according to the Congressional Budget Office, a few days' worth of revenue. Concede the Bush-era tax rate (though you wonder...

Ah, Chicago and its politics. There's no other American city quite like it. Fortunately. It's a beautiful city from the outside. And a political cesspool inside, a seeping source of conniving and corruption that spawned Barack Obama and his top aide Valerie Jarrett and is now ruled by the president's ex-chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. Another amazing chapter in the Windy City's sordid politics began unfolding Wednesday, one whose lineage can actually be traced back to the very beginnings of Obama's political career, which now has an extended expiry date of Jan. 20, 2017. Today, Obama lunches with the man...

Well THAT didn’t take long. The confetti thrown on college campuses has barely been swept up after Barack Obama’s reelection and reality has smacked more of his children in the face. This is happened faster than any of these fools could have imagined. You will recall that Obama’s union children at Hostess found out what real life is about last week. This week his college student children got their dose of cold truth. The stroke across the student loan crowd’s face is the news that in the 3rd quarter the number of student loans in default has skyrocketed. Student loans...

It would no doubt be controversial, but the idea of dissolving the fiscally struggling city of Detroit and absorbing it into Wayne County is being tossed around in Lansing. WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reports some state Republicans are talking about giving the city the option to vote itself into bankruptcy. And mid-Michigan Senator Rick Jones said all options should be considered — including dissolving the city. “If we have to, that is one idea we have to look at. We really have to look at everything that is on the table,” Jones said. “Again, if this goes to...

BEIJING/MANILA (Reuters) - Police in the southern Chinese island province of Hainan will board and search ships which illegally enter what China considers its territory in the disputed South China Sea, state media said on Thursday, a move likely to add to tensions. The South China Sea is Asia's biggest potential military trouble spot with several Asian countries claiming sovereignty over waters believed to be rich in oil and gas. The shortest route between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, it has some of the world's busiest shipping lanes. More than half the globe's oil tanker traffic passes through it. New...

Congress returned to "work" this week (now there's a laugh) to complete its lame-duck session before taking another holiday. Spending other people's money is a taxing experience. Their task is to avoid the "fiscal cliff," a geological construct of their own making. It doesn't take a genius to predict both parties will try to do two things: (1) reach an agreement that will allow each side to take some credit and (2) require those who work for a living to pay government more while they come up with phony, or inconsequential spending "cuts." Whatever they do, payroll taxes are going...

Lu Zhengai is so scared by the Mayan apocalypse, that’s he’s spent all his money - $160,000 - on building his very own Noah’s Ark. The barely sea worthy boat, which he claims will save him and his family when flood waters destroy his house, was designed by Lu himself, measures 65 feet and will weigh 80 tons when finished, according to Chinese media. Land lubber Lu, who lives in the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region of China – thousands of miles from the sea, began building the boat out of fear for the “doomsday” floods, predicted by the Maya calendar...

There is a new lawsuit the federal courts demanding all exclusions barring women from ground combat positions be dropped in the name of equal opportunity. This would be a great mistake. We have achieved the right balance of opportunities for women and the requirement to maintain certain sex-based exclusions to meet our national interests. Women, such as General Ann Dunwoody, are commanding at the highest levels and serving effectively in many combat, combat related, and intelligence related roles. There are many brave women who are flying combat missions and out on patrols in Military Police, Civil Affairs, and Intelligence roles...

You know you’re in trouble as a nation when the Communist Party USA is openly celebrating the re-election of the president. And that is exactly what is happening in late November 2012. The Stalinists are calling Barack Obama’s win a “victory for the people.” As a former communist (note small c), I can translate that for you. It means a “victory for communism – or, more precisely, a victory for the party.” Just listen to some of the hyperbolic and ecstatic rhetoric: “We meet on the heels of an enormous people’s victory. It was a long and bitterly contested battle...

Burglaries are up a startling 43 percent in Oakland this year compared to last, part of an ever-growing crime problem in the city. According to the latest numbers from the Oakland Police Department, more than 11,000 homes, cars or businesses have been broken into so far this year – translating to about 33 burglaries a day. The most popular targets have been cars with more than 5,700 burglarized so far this year. One of the most likely reasons for the sharp uptick in crime – city officials said they believe it’s the gradual loss of police officers from the force....
