The New York Times is attempting to save costs by implementing another round of newsroom staff cuts. According to a memo sent by executive editor Jill Abramson this morning, the newspaper is looking for 30 buyouts among newsroom staff. Over the next few days, Abramson wrote, certain employees will be asked to accept voluntary severance packages. (Newspaper Guild members also have the option to apply for a buyout even if they’re not among those contacted by the NYT.) If the quota isn’t met through buyouts, Abramson will be “forced to go to layoffs,” she said.

The Republicans can end the ludicrous "fiscal cliff" debate today by making the following offer: "We, the House majority and Senate minority Republicans, agree to CUT NOT EVEN ONE SINGLE DOLLAR in federal government spending for the next 5 years in return for the Democrats agreeing to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. We also promise that these two legislative initiatives, holding spending at exactly the current level and making the Bush tax cuts permanent, will result in a balanced budget in 10 years or less. Our proposal is that the federal government will spend EXACTLY the same number of...

A United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has so far spent $12.8 billion, has been charged by critics with ineptitude and unwillingness to protect civilians from murder, rape and other atrocities. Skepticism about the 19,000-strong U.N. force, known since 2010 as MONUSCO, has swelled to the point that some critics are questioning the wisdom of using the U.N. to prop up Congo, which is engaged in a bloody struggle with a rebel group known as the March 23 Movement (M23). Meantime, the U.N. continues to spend roughly $1.4 billion a year on MONUSCO, with the...

A cornerstone of physics may require a rethink if findings at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are confirmed. Recent experiments suggest that the most rigorous predictions based on the fundamental theory of electromagnetism—one of the four fundamental forces in the universe, and harnessed in all electronic devices—may not accurately account for the behavior of atoms in exotic, highly charged states. The theory in question is known as quantum electrodynamics, or QED, which physicists have held in high regard for decades because of its excellent track record describing electromagnetism's effects on matter. In particular, QED has been especially...

I sometimes refer to the Magic Formula for economic prosperity. Here it is: Low Taxes, Stable Money. It’s only four words. That’s so it is easy to remember. The United States was founded on the principles of the Magic Formula. Until the introduction of the income tax in 1913, taxation was almost nonexistent. The principle of a gold-based currency was defined in the Constitution. The result was magical: the United States was the most successful country of the 19th and 20th centuries. We seem to have forgotten the Magic Formula today. Despite Republicans’ staunch efforts, we are drifting towards “austerity”...

In any debate about immigration, the response you are likely to get will probably include the sickly-sweet mantra, "We're a nation of immigrants." Whether you're pointing out that illegal immigrants are driving down wages, failing to assimilate, or promoting the welfare state, the answer is predictable: "We're a nation of immigrants." The "nation of immigrants" mantra is often a plea for compassion toward immigrants. The phrase reflects a desperate, well-meaning desire to rationalize the presence of people who are violating our laws and patronizing the welfare system. The trouble is that repeating a phrase does nothing to enforce our law,...

Unfortunately, the study’s conclusions were rigged and the study’s release shows problematic conclusions. When reading the report, a person would suspect that the state’s pension system is perfectly fine. The report shows that the state is offering benefits that aren’t overly generous compared to peers, that it is about as well-funded as its peers, and that the state has adopted typical investment risks. Sure, it's sort of useful for instantly transmitting global news and completing important business transactions, but the Internet is truly about cats. They're the Internet's most enduring draw and always will be. Long after One Direction puts out its 50th year reunion album and Obama is known mostly as the dignified face on the $1,500 bill, there will still be images of cats napping in bedroom slippers. Their appeal is universal, and while we’re sure puppies and baby pandas will always have their place, cats dominate internet consciousness. As we barrel towards 2013, here’s a gallery of the most influential...

House Republican leaders have made a counteroffer to President Obama in the fiscal cliff negotiations, proposing to cut $2.2 trillion with a combination of spending cuts, entitlement reforms and $800 billion in new tax revenue. The leaders delivered the offer to the White House on Monday with a three-page letter signed by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), and four other senior Republicans, including Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the party’s just-defeated vice presidential nominee. If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream---and not make dreams your master; If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those...

British researchers say women are more likely than men to give women's bodies a visual once-over. Researchers at Bristol University came to their conclusions after asking volunteers to examine a range of different images, including pictures of couples in films, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday. They found women spent 61 percent of their time looking at the women in the pictures, and only 39 percent on the men, while men seemed to spend just over half -- 53 percent -- of their time looking at the women. "This is counter-intuitive from a sexual perspective if you are thinking about desire,...

(VATICAN CITY) -- Benedict XVI, the pope known for his hefty volumes of theology, is now trying brevity - spreading the faith through his own Twitter account. The pontiff will tweet in eight languages starting Dec. 12 using his personal handle @Pontifex, responding live to questions about faith during his weekly general audience, the Vatican said Monday. Within six hours of the Vatican's announcement, Benedict had already garnered nearly 150,000 followers on the English version of (at)Pontifex alone, with thousands more following him in the eight other language accounts. All that, and he hadn't even sent a single tweet. He...

A wheelchair-bound man from Virginia who says he rarely bowled before he was paralyzed from the waist down, has bowled a perfect game. George Holscher, 48, of Chesapeake, was paralyzed in a car crash when he was 25. "When my doctor told me I'd never walk again, that was the worst 5 minutes of my life. And that's about as long as I let it last," Holscher said. Since his accident, Holscher said he started playing a number of sports -- including wheelchair basketball, tennis and billiards -- The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported. He stuck with bowling, and when he rolled...

A U.S. oil producer announced developments at the Bakken oil field in North Dakota and Montana could be a "game changer." Continental Resources, a U.S. producer focused on the Northern Plains, said about 1,000 barrels of oil flowed during a one-day test at its Charlotte 3-22H well in western North Dakota. The company said it was able to exploit the reserve using a 30-stage fracture stimulation technique in the northern shale play. Continental said the 1,280-acre suit was the first in the play to yield production from three distinct horizons in the Bakken formation. The company in 2010 said technology...

Source: Keith Hennessey BlogUnderstanding the President’s fiscal cliff offer I am going to describe the President’s proposal to Republican Congressional leaders, then react to the most important parts of it. Secretary Geithner offered this proposal last Thursday. Senate Minority Leader McConnell was right to laugh at the President’s proposal, and Speaker Boehner was right to call it “silliness.” This is not a serious offer. This is a post for intermediate to advanced readers. Except where noted, all large numbers are for the next ten years. President Obama’s opening bid Items in bold are being labeled by the Administration as non-negotiable....
