CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A south Charlotte psychiatric facility for teens is closing its doors in early February, leaving dozens of teens looking for new homes and 122 employees looking for new jobs. The Keys of Carolina officially notified the state this week that it was closing but has not said why. Eyewitness News uncovered it was facing a list of violations from the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services and a $6,000 administrative fine, according to state officials, for violations of laws regarding the "protection from harm, abuse, neglect or exploitation" of patients. State officials said conditions in...

The Tell-Tale Chart ECRI December 7, 2012 Following our September 2011 recession call, we clarified its likely timing in December 2011. Based on the historical lead times of ECRI’s leading indexes, we concluded that, if it didn’t start in the first quarter of 2012, it was very likely to begin by mid-year. But we also made it clear at the time that you wouldn’t know whether or not we were wrong until the end of 2012. And so it’s interesting to note the rush to judgment by a number of analysts, already asserting that we were wrong. So, with about...

Pizza Hut may have discovered a new route to a man’s heart — through his nose. The chain is releasing the limited-edition scent, which smells of “freshly baked, hand-tossed dough,” in response to an Internet joke that began last August. According to a company news release, Pizza Hut Canada’s marketing firm, Grip Ltd., asked the chain’s Facebook fans what they would name a perfume that smelled like “a box of Pizza Hut pizza being opened.” When the post went viral — earning more than 300 frenzied comments — they decided to make good on the gag. In the summer of 2012, Barack Obama talked tough about “red lines” for Syria and the regime’s chemical weapons. In a rare press conference on August 20th, the President warned Bashar Assad that the US was prepared to act if Assad began to move his chemical weapons as a precursor to their use, emphasis mine: obama-We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. The “infamy” of December 7, 1941, is deeper than most Americans have ever imagined. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was almost certainly the result of a Soviet plot—“Operation Snow”—carried out by Harry Dexter White, a figure of enormous influence in the Roosevelt administration and a known Soviet spy. Americans remember Pearl Harbor as the work of a Japanese military machine hell-bent on a war of conquest. The truth is more complicated. The imperial regime had faced severe political shocks throughout the 1930s. Two attempts on the life of Emperor Hirohito—one by a Japanese communist whose father was a member...

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn released a scathing report on wasteful spending at the Department of Homeland Security. The report concentrates mainly on the grant program, Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) which is meant to help at-risk cities strengthen their security against terrorists. DHS has spent almost $7.144 billion in UASI grants this past decade, but there is no hard evidence grant recipient cities are any safer. The program used to include 64 cities, but this was cut down to 31 in 2012. The money is specifically meant for terrorist protection. Officials in Michigan used money to pay for 13 sno-cone...

Michigan is one step closer to becoming a Right to Work state. Last night, both the state House and Senate passed bills that would forbid the public sector unions from taking 2% out of workers’ paychecks for dues payments, regardless of whether or not they’re members. The bills can’t be passed into law until Tuesday, owing to procedural requirements, but they’re almost sure to prevail, at which point Gov. Rick Snyder has vowed to sign them. The House and Senate each passed bills on the same day they were introduced that give private and public sector workers the right to...

Congratulations to the GOP for losing the easiest election of our lifetimes. Over the past four years, Obama has been exposed as a liar, a fraud, a charlatan and a scam. We’ve seen his policies of racism, divisiveness and class warfare tear at the fabric of our society on a daily basis. We’ve seen the national debt go up by $5 trillion during his watch. We’ve seen the value of the dollar go down dramatically over that same time. We’ve seen ambassadors killed overseas while he sits around and laughs it up with daytime talk show hosts. On top of...

High-level negotiations between the White House and Capitol Hill in times of divided government tend to follow a script. This year’s talks about how to avert the fiscal cliff, for the most part, appear to track a familiar line: The outside message from the top players is often different from what's happening on a parallel track inside the room where the final deal is being crafted. Publicly, both President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner continue to argue their positions on taxes and entitlement reforms, hoping they can win the public relations battle that frames their respective party as...

Right To Work: Both chambers of the Michigan legislature pass bills banning union dues as a condition of employment as a Detroit city councilwoman wonders when the pork will arrive. The choice is growth vs. stagnation. Reports of the GOP's demise may be greatly exaggerated, at least at the state level, as Michigan, birthplace of the modern labor movement and unionism, stands poised to become the nation's 24th right-to-work (RTW) state. If it goes ahead, it will join recent addition Indiana in challenging union power as Gov. Scott Walker successfully did in Wisconsin. Michigan's Republican governor, Rick Snyder, is poised...

A man who would grow t o be one of the more unlikely heroes on one of America's darkest days, Miller spent every day of his youth on the edge of poverty, just struggling to survive and make ends meet. By the time he was a young man, his family had settled down, working as subsistence farmers, and as soon as he was old enough to push a plow he went to work busting his ass in the fields to make sure his family had enough food to eat. When he wasn't out providing food for his family, he went to school, trampled DBs as the star fullback on his high school team (no small feat in a place like Texas that, as far as I can tell, has always taken their high school football a little bit seriously), and worked nights as a cook at a local restaurant to help make some extra money during the Great Depression. So he was pretty busy. And he didn't have a problem busting his ass like a madman to make sure that shit got done.</p>

For Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government, more battle tanks and jet fighters are on their way from the United States. Cairo’s military link to Washington has remained intact, meaning the U.S. will continue to modernize the biggest military in Africa — even as President Mohammed Morsi has decreed near-absolute power for himself and his supporters and opponents battle outside his palace. Analysts say Egypt’s military buildup presents risks for Washington — and Israel — with the growing influence of the Brotherhood, whose overriding goal is to establish Shariah, or Islamic, law worldwide. A common trope in social policy debates is to claim that the public’s changing opinion on the policy at stake, rather than the policy’s moral or substantive justifications, merits changing the platform of one’s preferred political party. This notion seems recently to have taken root on the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, and several commentators have reacted.Consider its November 8 editorial extolling referendums on marriage. The editors argue that views on “gay marriage” are changing so that “after 32 defeats at the ballot box, a gay marriage initiative was adopted by voters,” which shows that Americans are “capable...

Obamacare doesn't go far enough. The government needs to replace private insurance companies in a complete takeover of health care. That’s the system California’s union leaders are pressuring Democrats to create, now that they enjoy supermajorities in both chambers of the state Legislature. And their influence is “tremendous,” according to former Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, who served as Senate majority leader from 2001 to 2008. “California Teachers Association’s former president referred to them as the fourth, co-equal branch of government,” she said. “Nobody has the political and money war chest that they do.” Read more: http://times247.com/articles/34unions-steer-california-democrats-toward-cliff9#ixzz2EPP6RNs3

The swift and near-simultaneous arrests late last month of 11 individuals allegedly preparing to bomb U.S. and other Western targets throughout Java, Indonesia's most populated island, should serve as a wake-up call to Asia's national security establishment, lawmakers and leaders. The foiled plot would have been just the latest in a flurry of terrorist activity by members of Islamist organizations, all of which are registered and legally sanctioned by the Indonesian government. During the arrests, Indonesia's elite counter-terrorism squad found explosive material, a bomb-making manual, detonators and a list of targets that included the American and Australian embassies in Jakarta...

Kill them all slowly and painfully.” Now, PSY has released a statement explaining, "The song I featured on...
  • Obamacare May Hike Your Pet’s Health Care Bills

American health care consumers aren’t the only ones who will be hit by slated Obamacare tax hikes. Medical bills for their pets may go up as well. According to a rule published Friday by the Internal Revenue Service, some medical devices used in veterinary practices will be hit by Obamacare’s 2.3 percent device tax. Many of their manufacturers are expected to hike prices, meaning higher veterinary costs for the nation’s pet owners. The tax will not hit devices that are used exclusively for veterinary purposes. But a host of such devices are manufactured for use in both human health care...

Today is December 7th. 71 years ago, the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, triggering the United States entry into World War 2. 71 years ago, Japanese bombs rained down on Pearl Harbor. The skies were filled with acrid smoke from flaming warships and burning planes. Within three hours, the attack was over. Three and a half years later, Pearl Harbor was avenged as a defeated Japan surrendered to American forces in Tokyo Bay. While many remember Pearl Harbor still to this day, many Americans are today clueless about what happened on that Sunday morning so long ago.
