  • Strange Days: Print Two-One Trillion Dollar Coins to Solve Debt Ceiling Crisis?

The Washington Post had interesting article about solving the debt ceiling “crisis.” The author recommended that Treasury produce two-one trillion dollar platinum coins and deposit them at The Fed. “I like it,” says Joseph Gagnon of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. “There’s nothing that’s obviously economically problematic about it.” Actually, Mr. Gagnon, there are a few problems with it. 1. Moral hazard. The President orders trillion dollar coins to be produced, then gives one each to campaign donors and other party favorites (note that I did not mention our current President by name since this would be a temptation...

Late-hour speeches by Republican Sens. Tom Coburn (Okla.) and John McCain (Ariz.) on runaway military health costs led the Senate Tuesday to shelve a defense bill amendment that would have spared family members and retirees more burdensome co-pays on drug prescriptions filled off base. The timing of their opposition, in the last hours of consideration of the 2013 defense authorization bill when amendments were only being approved by unanimous consent, allowed Coburn and McCain to block the Senate from supporting the softer House-passed plan for raising prescription fees. There will be a second chance next week when House-Senate conferees iron...

A new initiative by the federal government called Seven50, a cousin of Agenda 21, seeks to relieve local governments nationwide of direct representation by and for local citizens in matters of education, infrastructure and population. Indian River County Commissioner Bob Solari (772- 226-1442) is putting out an urgent call to attend a special Indian River County Commission meeting concerning this topic on Tuesday, December 18, 9 a.m. in the Vero Beach County Chambers, 1801 27th Street, Vero Beach, FL. For the last century all fully-qualified submarine officers have been men. But that all changed when two women were honored with their Navy dolphin pins. The ceremony on Wednesday at Naval Base Kitsap was a graduation day of sorts with crowds, caps, and uniforms. From a cluster of colleagues, two female crew members of the USS Maine ballistic missile submarine were called front and center for a designation that made them qualified submariners. The two junior lieutenants were among the first three women in the submarine force's 112-year history to get their dolphins. "This is the mark where your command...

Turns out, everyone’s susceptible to the holiday blues: a mall Santa was fired in Maine for being a downright grinch. Parents complained and fa-la-la-la-la, he lost his job. Taking to Facebook, the angry parents voiced their irritation with the Scrooge Santa. The mother of 6-year-old Chantel Mailhiot told WGME 13 that the Santa wouldn’t allow her daughter to sit on his lap simply because she didn’t purchase a $20 photo package. Apparently, though, it gets worse: even after little Chantel told Santa she wanted an American girl doll, he told her that instead, she’d get an “American football.” After Chantel’s...

Could this be the first White House meeting with journalists in which more information about the proceedings came from the White House than from the journalists? After all, the White House did at least issue this statement: “This afternoon at the White House, the President met with influential progressives to talk about the importance of preventing a tax increase on middle class families, strengthening our economy and adopting a balanced approach to deficit reduction.”

    Washington Post ^ | December 6 , 2012 | Robert J. Samuelson,
The story behind the story is that “tax reform,” as we know it, is dying. During the 1980s, no major piece of legislation better symbolized bipartisan consensus than the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which was regarded by both liberal and conservative experts as the best tax law since World War II. The basic idea was simple: Reduce tax rates and recover lost revenue by ending (or limiting) tax breaks. The struggle between President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner over the “fiscal cliff” indicates that this beneficial consensus has collapsed. Just the opposite is occurring. ... many politicians support...

On Dec. 5, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) released a report providing an overview of the $35 million the Department of Homeland Security has spent on grant programs since 2003. Ostensibly, the money was to be spent in a way that enhanced public security. Thus the money is labeled "security spending." However, what Coburn discovered is that the money is often not enhancing security in any way. And because funds are limited, the specious spending Coburn discovered is actually "making our nation less secure by directing scarce dollars to low-priority projects and low-risk areas." In the report, Coburn lists multiple examples...

White House could protect middle class from looming tax hikes By Peter Schroeder and Bernie Becker - 12/09/12 06:00 AM ET The White House has the power to temporarily protect taxpayers from middle-class tax hikes even as upper income rates rise if Congress does nothing and all of the Bush-era tax rates expire in January. Experts and lawmakers alike agree that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has the power to adjust how much is withheld from paychecks for tax purposes — for all taxpayers or just for some. By doing so, Geithner could ensure paychecks reflect the White House position that...

The consumer price index rose 2 percent in November from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said on its web site on Sunday. That compares with the 2.1-percent median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of 35 economists and 1.7-percent gain in October. Producer prices fell for a ninth month, while the pace of the decline moderated. The data may herald a new round of inflation should the nation’s nascent growth recovery gather...

Posted on December 6, 2012 by Guest Blogger Guest post by Tom FullerThe physics behind the theory of global warming are solid. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, we’re emitting industrial levels of it, with China now in the lead for emissions. A significant portion remains in the atmosphere for a fairly long time, though the residence time is widely disputed. This residence of CO2 retards the cooling of the Earth and temperatures warm as a result. One of the few non-controversial datasets in climate change is the Keeling curve, the graph of the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere reproduced here:Figure1...

“Mah fellow Americans, inflayshun is ow-uh friend…” If you can pronounce the phonetic wording above – and if it sounds vaguely familiar – then for better or worse you probably grew up watching “Saturday Night Live” like I did. The line comes from a late 1970’s skit wherein funny guy Dan Aykroyd was impersonating President Jimmy Carter. During his one term as President, Carter addressed the nation numerous times to try and quell people’s fears about inflation, the economic malady that defined the era. During those years, Carter announced several anti-inflation policy measures. He urged Americans to “tighten their belts”...

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — The rotting — and oh-so-smelly — carcass of the twenty ton fin whale that washed up on a beach in Malibu last Monday, has been carted out to sea. Officials moved the 41-foot male Saturday afternoon after scores of area residents complained about the stench. After the whale washed up last week, several jurisdictions went back and forth trying to determine who was responsible for the whale’s disposal. County Fire Department dispatcher Christina Flores said department officials confirmed to dispatchers that an effort to move the whale was being mounted by lifeguard officials. The Malibu Homeowners Association...

Hundreds of Saturday afternoon customers at a Sacramento shopping center witnessed a tense three-hour standoff at a Jack in the Box restaurant, which ended with a robbery suspect shot by Sacramento police sharpshooters. ------------------------cut---------------------- Dan Escamilla had just sat down to lunch at El Festival taqueria behind the Jack in the Box. A bail agent from Orange County, he was visiting the area in search of a violent felony fugitive. Still wearing her headset from the drive-through window, a female Jack in the Box employee rushed into the taqueria and said the nearby restaurant was being robbed, Escamilla said. "The...

As most of you know, during a football game last week Bob Costas lectured us po’ goofy Americans about the evils of a “gun culture” and how we need to evolve away from being obsessed with firearms. As soon as I heard that drivel roll off Mr. C’s tongue I ordered another 30/06, a sweet Walther PPK and a custom .416 Rigby turnbolt. Cowabunga, Bob. Thanks for reminding me to buy more guns. First off, let me help you, Robert: Guns do not kill people. Dads with daughters do. Oh, and BTW, Planned Parenthood kills a lot of people …...

Police believe the man shot dead during a home invasion in Mississauga early Friday morning was an intruder. The robbery was at a residence on Corkstone Glade, near Rathburn Road and Dixie Road. Police responded to a 911 call just after 12:30 a.m. When they arrived, the suspects were gone and 22-year-old Ibrahim Abukar was found dead. He was alleged to have broken into the home along with the two other men. Peel police said that the men, two of whom were armed, were confronted by the homeowner. A struggle ensued, resulting in Abukar's death.

LONDON — It’s the million-dollar question, and not only here in the U.K. Jacintha Saldana — one of the nurses taken in by the prank phone call to the hospital where Catherine, duchess of Cambridge, was being treated for acute morning sickness — killed herself early Friday. And we are all left scratching our heads. Why did she do it? Of course, the first thing we all wonder is about her mental stability. We’d all desperately like to believe that this hard-working mother of two, who commuted 140 miles to her day job, often working double shifts so that she...

While I was taking a short break from working this morning and fixing some breakfast, my TV was still on in the background, tuned in to MSNBC. The host of Up With Chris Hayes was holding court over a panel discussion on domestic energy issues, so since that’s pretty much my field I had decided to tune in. The initial discussion had roped in quite a bit of the usual disinformation on natural gas fracking (which appeared to draw heavily on "facts" from fabulist Josh Fox's fictional propaganda piece, Gasland). There was one industry "advocate" included who I wasn't familiar...
  • PDF of full court opinion: "There is no, 'Trust us, changes are coming' clause in the Constitution."

EXCERPT: Moreover, the First Amendment does not require citizens to accept assurances from the government that, if the government later determines it has made a misstep, it will take ameliorative action. There is no, "Trust us, changes are coming" clause in the Constitution. To the contrary, the Bill of Rights itself, and the First Amendment in particular, reflect a degree of skepticism towards governmental self-restraint and self-correction. See Florida Cannabis Action Network, Inc. v. City of Jacksonville, 130 F. Supp. 2d 1358, 1362 (M.D. Fla. 2001) ("The whim, self restraint, or even the well reasoned judgment of a government official...
