    Sun Herald ^ | December 12, 2012 | Robin Fitzgerald
A Biloxi Community Court judge has sentenced a 78-year-old woman to 100 hours of community service for the hoarding of cats in a case believed to be unprecedented. Dawn Summers, a 50-year resident of the Glendale Heights subdivision, thought she was already performing a community service. She's the manager of a feral cat colony. In cooperation with a city-sanctioned program of the Humane Society of South Mississippi, she feeds cats that have been trapped, examined, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and released to live outdoors without fear of euthanasia. She said she's fed as many as 27. Her sentencing drew criticism...

CLACKAMAS, OR (KPTV) - A 22-year-old man from southeast Portland parked his car outside Macy's, rushed into the Clackamas Town Center mall food court and opened fire, killing two people Tuesday, investigators said. Jacob Roberts' AR-15 rifle then jammed, but he was able to get the gun working again. He shot and killed himself, sheriff's deputies said. Steve Forsyth, of West Linn, and Cindy Yuille, of northeast Portland, were killed by Roberts, authorities said. A third shooting victim, Kristina Shevchenko, survived and is being treated at Oregon Health & Science University hospital. Deputies said Roberts stole the rifle used...

Time for another motor in the house. Last vehicle I bought I ran by the Freeper Auto-Guys and it worked great. Time for a different kind of transportation. Looking at a new two or four door Golf TDI in Red with manual transmission. No sunroof, no nav package. Test drove it twice and like the manual transmission. Dealer giving 300K warranty with serviceing Q10K at dealership. Your thoughts.

NFL legend Dick Butkus on Wednesday did not express enthusiasm for the idea of banning kickoffs from professional football, but he did not totally reject the proposal either. CNSNews.com asked him what he thought of it. Well, its just the sign of the times, said Butkus. I guess the game is really changing. If they have statistics, which they claim they do, that a lot of concussions happen on the kickoffI mean, youre taking away one of the most exciting parts of the game, Butkus told CNSNews.com in an interview Wednesday. They claim that, what, 30 percent of the...
  • (CT)DEEP facing both federal and state budget cuts

Facing potentially dramatic budget cuts on two fronts, Connecticut's commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says the agency will need to remake its business model to continue to do its job. In a particularly sobering presentation to an annual gathering of environmental advocates, Daniel Esty made it clear that the pain from a series of expected state budget cuts would be exacerbated by anticipated federal ones -- money that the department has relied heavily on for many years. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's budget rescissions last month have already stripped nearly $1.5 million from DEEP's budget and more...

A Marine who was killed after his unconscious body fell on a live grenade during the Iraq War will not receive a posthumous Medal of Honor, it was revealed today. Sgt Rafael Peralta was 25 years old when he fell on the grenade in Fallouja, Iraq in 2004. Though he perished, his body shielded other American soldiers and saved the lives of other Marines. The Pentagon told Rep. Duncan Hunter it supports the decision of former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who honored Sgt. Rafael Peralta with the Navy Cross instead of the militarys highest honor.

We now know the name of the masked man dressed in camouflage that opened fire in a shopping mall near Portland, Oregon. Police say Jacob Tyler Roberts was armed with a stolen semi-automatic weapon when he stormed the mall on Tuesday. FOX23 did some checking and neither Woodland Hills Mall or the Promenade allows open carry holders to bring their guns inside. Tulsa police say its a good thing it would allow them to pinpoint who a shooter is if this were ever to happen here. However, local gun advocates say it puts them more in danger. Kirby Ellis is...

Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R- UT) told Breitbart News on Wednesday that he has been thwarted by the State Department from seeing any Americans who survived the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Many people forget that there were Americans who survived the Benghazi attack, some of whom were badly injured and are still recovering. My understanding is that we still have some people in the hospital. Id like to visit with them and wish them nothing but the best but the State Department has seen it unfit for me to know who those people areor even how...

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Budget Committee, tells Newsmax he will refuse to approve an increase in the debt ceiling unless a deal is reached on major entitlement reformand he is convinced House Speaker John Boehner will refuse as well. The South Carolina Republican also says President Obama should man up and create a lasting legacy by saving Medicare and Social Security with those reforms. And he insists defense spending should not suffer significant new cuts because there is no Social Security without national security.

There are limits to how much aid the Federal Reserve can provide to the U.S. economy, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke warned on Wednesday as he urged politicians to tackle a year-end fiscal cliff that could derail the countrys gradual recovery. The U.S. central bank announced it would keep buying $85 billion of Treasury and mortgage-backed bonds a month until it saw a substantial improvement in the outlook for the labor market. Its balance sheet would increase to almost $4 trillion by the end of next year if it kept up that pace of purchases. Critics of the central...

Former Democrat Joe Lieberman used his last speech on the U.S. Senate floor on Wednesday to call for bipartisanship and get in a last dig over the controversial result of the 2000 election, when he was the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Lieberman, 70, announced in January 2011 that he would retire when his fourth term ends next month rather than seek re-election. He reflected on his career in remarks that lasted for about 20 minutes, recounting landmarks in his career and changes in society since he became a U.S. senator in January 1989. When I started here in the Senate,...

I'm looking for a recommendation for a gun for my son for Christmas. Just to lay out the basics - he just turned 15 and is about 6'3" and weighs 235. Yes, he plays high school football. His mother and I have been divorced for many years, and she absolutely forbids him to have anything to do with guns in or near her home. His cousin recently received a .22 pistol, and my son's mom wouldn't let him hold it. I don't know whether she knows (but I assume she does) that he has shot my HK .40 USP along...

At the latest count, 39 states allow civilians to own suppressors. If you live in one of these silencer-friendly states and havent purchased a suppressor, you need to put one on your Christmas list. The advantages of suppressors are numerous. They not only protect your hearing but make shooting with a group of people much safer and improve marksmanship by reducing flinching. Ive been shooting at Gunsite this last week during the Shooting Slam and had a perfect object lesson demonstrating the value of suppressors the other day. Weve been shooting the Rock River Arms LAR-15 ATH Carbine, which has...
