Bobby Jindal wants you to be able to get your contraceptives over the counter, and that’s just the first step. “Democrats have wrongly accused Republicans of being against birth control and against allowing people to use it,” the Louisiana governor writes in the Wall Street Journal today. “That’s hogwash.”

Ray Briem, the longtime KABC-AM talk show host who ruled all-night radio for nearly three decades with his phone calls to the famous and the quirky and his opinionated banter slamming liberals, championing conservative causes and extolling the big-band music he loved, died Wednesday at his Malibu home. He was 82. The cause was cancer, said his son Bryan. Briem spent most of his life on the radio, reaching his largest audience as the host of a popular midnight-to-5 a.m. talk show on KABC from 1967 to 1994. During those 27 years he helped set the mold for what has...

LONDON (Reuters) - International climate scientists are more certain than ever that humans are responsible for global warming, rising sea levels and extreme weather events, according to a leaked draft report by an influential panel of experts. The early draft, which is still subject to change before a final version is released in late 2013, showed that a rise in global average temperatures since pre-industrial times was set to exceed 2 degrees Celsius by 2100, and may reach 4.8 Celsius. "It is extremely likely that human activities have caused more than half of the observed increase in global average surface...

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, center, at the announcement of an education reform plan.President Enrique Peña Nieto on Monday announced a broad reform aimed at improving Mexico’s sclerotic educational system, a plan that also seems aimed at weakening the enormously powerful teachers union. Mexico has some of the worst public schools in the hemisphere, consistently placing low on international surveys of education quality. Many blame the union and its autocratic boss, Elba Esther Gordillo, who have perpetuated a system that allows teachers to buy or inherit their jobs, regardless of skill or qualifications. The initiative announced Monday by Peña Nieto...

Nearly four years after a Freedom of Information Request was submitted to the federal government, the Defense Intelligence Agency released a highly redacted cable on the 1993 murder of a Mexican archbishop said to be mistaken for drug baron Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera. Others argue it was an assassination and no accident. Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera The cable is definitely a blast to the past, as it talks about the rise of Guzman’s rise and mentions other traffickers, such as Juan Garcia Abrego and Amado Carrillo Fuentes, who were big deals a generation ago. Of course, Garcia Abrego...

On November 29, Albania was the sole Muslim-majority country in the United Nations to be counted among the 41 abstainers from the proposal to admit Palestine as a non-member observer. Certain Islamists were displeased, to say the least. In particular, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, head of the “fundamentalist-lite” Justice and Development Party or AKP, responded with one of the tantrums that has become a hallmark of his administration. Erdogan declared that he had exerted pressure on an unnamed Muslim land to abandon its intention to vote “no,” encouraging it to support the Palestinians, and arguing that an abstention...

AROUND 251 million years ago, over 90 per cent of the species on Earth suddenly went extinct. Their killer may not have been a devastating meteorite or a catastrophic volcanic eruption, but a humble microbe. The prevailing theory is that the mass extinction at the end of the Permian period was triggered by volcanic eruptions over a vast area of what is now Siberia. This led, among other things, to a dramatic rise in greenhouse gas emissions. But the scenario just doesn't fit the facts, says Daniel Rothman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From his analysis of an end-Permian...

"They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings,...

When Isaac Newton went to the University of Cambridge several centuries ago, he studied seven days a week, at least ten hours a day, and actively avoided the revelry that some Cambridge undergraduates engaged in even then. No one expects American undergraduates to work as hard as Isaac Newton or as medieval monks. However, what seems to be happening on many American college campuses is the development of such a powerful "fun" culture that a quarter of the students or more arrive thinking that having fun is the main reason they are at college and that the pursuit of knowledge...

Troop dismay no longer hiddenQuantico, VA - Until I joined the Fourth Estate, it was my experience that most Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen and Marines usually eschewed contact with members of the media. Regard for the potentates of the press used to be about equal to that of chiggers, ticks, scorpions and fire ants. When I was on active duty, I had an aerosol can of bug spray hand-labeled: “Reporter Repellant.” If a military person had to share space with any of these assorted insects, the last thing anyone wanted to do was to discuss politics. Things have changed. Shortly...

First Lady Michelle Obama Thursday suggested Republicans are engaged in rampant lying as they debate the issues with President Obama. “People have to stay focused on what’s going on, because it’s easy to get confused in all the back and forth that goes on, and there’s a whole lot of not-truth telling going on, if you know what I mean,” Michelle said during a radio appearance on the (The Tom Joyner Show).Mrs. Obama also charged that voter suppression during the 2012 election was widespread. (Columbus OH) It was announced on WVKO-AM this morning, that as of midnight tomorrow, the format on WVKO-AM will be changing. The LMA for the station will ending at that time and the station won't be Progressive Talk anymore. Thanks to Gary Richards for bringing back the format to Columbus radio for one more go around. That said, Mr. Richards said last year he wanted to buy the station outright so this is a disappointment to me. My guess is the new lease holders will take the station to a Urban Gospel format. Just a guess on my part.
