We all know that the U.S. tax code is riddled with "loopholes", exemptions and deductions intended to incentivize certain activities. ... to the technocrats in the federal government, the tax you don't have to pay on the value of rent you don't have to pay because you own your home is a loophole. Read that last sentence again. Its called "The Imputed Net Rental Income on Owner-Occupied Housing" and the feds include it in their annual list of "tax expenditures." That term is how Washington officially refers to credits, deductions and exemptions. Here's how the federal government describes it: Under...

Everyone I know is very disturbed about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, wondering why or how someone could do such a thing. Anyone in their right mind wouldn't dream of committing such a terrible act of violence. I read an article the day after that really brought to light something that might be at the root of this unspeakable evil. It is mental illness, in one form or another. I Am Adam Lanza's Mother tells the story of a mother faced with what Adam Lanza's real mother may have failed to deal with. Here is how Liza Long begins...

Dear Principal or Headmaster, I am sure you are as grieved and upset as I am over recent events. I would like to know (I am writing to all of my children's schools): Do you have a policy regarding the use of force, including all necessary and legal force, to defend the children who attend your school in the event of danger? If so, what is it? If not, why not, and what is being done to develop such a policy? Sincerely,

A U.S. Marine Corps captain proposed to his partner in front of a Christmas tree at the White House Saturday in the first gay engagement to happen there. Capt. Matthew Phelps asked his boyfriend Ben Schock to marry him in the grand foyer of the White House, on the six-month anniversary of their first date, which also was at the White House, reported ABC News. “Our first date was to the White House, so I wanted to propose to him there,” Phelps told ABC News. “When I got invited to the holiday tour — six months to the day that...

Samsung has overtaken Nokia as the top mobile phone brand for 2012 and has opened up a decisive lead over Apple in the smartphone market, a research firm said on Tuesday. This will mark the first time in 14 years that Finland-based Nokia will not sit atop the global mobile phone business on an annual basis, according to IHS iSuppli. Samsung is expected to account for 29 percent of worldwide cellphone shipments, up from 24 percent in 2011, according to the IHS, which said Nokia's share dropped to 24 percent from 30 percent. This will mark the first time the...

Plans call for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to get its first overseas deployment in 2017 to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in line with the military’s “Pacific pivot,” according to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The F-35B Lightning II — the Navy and Marine Corps variant featuring short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities — has been billed as the next-generation stealth fighter despite complaints about noise and cost overruns. It can travel at speeds of Mach 1.6 — about 1,200 mph — and can land on ships or damaged runways, according to the web site for developer Lockheed Martin Corp....

The idea that we should take from those who have and give to those who don't is viewed as proper and just among liberals. In fact, if you do not subscribe to redistribution ideology, you are attacked as being greedy at best and racist at worst. The problem is that income redistribution in practice promotes one of the same moral injustices found under slavery. As Thomas Sowell put it: "Not since the days of slavery have there been so many people who feel entitled to what other people have produced as there are in the modern welfare state." If morality...

After ironing out differences in the House and Senate’s competing versions of the bill, congressional negotiators have set the stage for a final vote this week on the National Defense Authorization Act, a sweeping $632 billion defense bill, which will provide for modest troop pay increases and Tricare fee hikes, as well as insurance coverage for abortions in the case of rape and incest. Considered must-pass legislation every year, the bill provides a blueprint for Congress’ national defense priorities for the year. Lawmakers hailed their ability to get the bill passed for the 51st year a row, a sign of...

The so-called problem of the Palestinian Authority-Israel struggle actually disguises the real problem of Islamic fundamentalism, Israeli Ambassador to Norway Naim Araidi told the local ABC news outlet. He said that Muslim extremists want to replace modern life in Europe with Islamic Shari'a law. As for PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, “He does not even represent his wife," according to the ambassador. Araidi, who earned undergraduate and Msters degrees at Hebrew University and received his Doctorate at Bar-Ilan University, grew up in a Druze village near Haifa. The Druze do not consider themselves Arabs, and their religion is considered “secret” that...

Canadians expressed outrage Thursday after the release of Guy Turcotte, a cardiologist who in 2009 confessed to killing his children as they slept in their beds. What many wanted to know was how a father who stabbed his children dozens of times could be free after 46 months of confinement. Those voices echo the grief of Turcotte's ex-wife, Dr. Isabelle Gaston, the mother of 5-year-old Olivier and 3-year-old Anne-Sophie. As Gaston pored over her children's autopsy reports, she wished she had no idea what they meant. But as a physician and a coroner, she knows it's true: Her children suffered...

There are a range of issues at play here involving mental health, school security and a culture that at times fails to reject the glorification of violence that can desensitize us to the sanctity and majesty of life. Going forward, we need to pay close attention to what the experts conclude from this incident in order to see if there are lessons to be learned and applied here in Ohio," said Kasich.

Immediate, B) Cheap and C) Bound to be effective and at the least, D) Certainly worth trying. That is if the New York Times, the Washington Post, People Magazine, NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox–Big Media, USA– were to announce, jointly, the following voluntary policy: “As of January 1, 2013, we will not publish or broadcast the name, photograph or background of anyone who attempts or...

The year 2012 was defined by the calculated re-emergence of Obama worship, no matter how obvious his failures in office. After his re-election, the actor Jamie Foxx let it all hang out in a tribute at the BET Awards on November 25: "First of all, give an honor to God and our lord and savior, Barack Obama!" For that President Jesus gasbaggery, Foxx was selected as one of the winners of the Media Research Center's Best Notable Quotables of 2012, a collection of liberal foolishness selected by 46 judges of distinction in the conservative media. Foxx won the "Barbra Streisand...
