“The gunman who slaughtered 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school may have snapped because his mother was planning to commit him to a psychiatric facility,” foxnews.com reports. A former U.S. Marine appears to be Fox’s primary source for the story. “From what I’ve been told, [spree killer Adam Lanza, above second row, second from the right] was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed,” Flashman told Fox. “Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he...

General Motors will repurchase 200 million shares of its own stock currently held by the U.S. Treasury, with the White House announcing plans to sell off its remaining 300 million shares within the next 12 to 15 months. The automaker will pay $27.50 for the shares it will acquire, a 7.9% premium over the $25.49 closing price on December 18, 2012 – but that is also a sharp discount from the $33 price set during GM’s initial public offering in November 2010. And it means taxpayers will lose billions on the sale.

Democracies sometimes reject freedom. It's MY constitution.Egypt has a new new democratically elected dictator and Venezuela still has her old one. Since they were elected by majorities of the voters they must be good democratic rulers who give the majority what they want. Suppose the majority want to have blasphemers' heads removed? Suppose the majority want to have money taken from the rich because they have been told that will help the poor? Giving the majority what they want is democratic and an effective way to get elected again. Individual freedom? Freedom is unnecessary in some democracies and may even...

While searching Orangeburg, S.C., home of Mexican national Nicolas Carpio-Leon, immigration agents found a .22 caliber Marlin rifle, a 9 mm Hi-Point pistol and ammunition. Carpio-Leon, who had lived in Orangeburg for 13 years and had three American-born children, claimed that he kept the firearms for the protection of his home and his children. But, as media outlets noted on Tuesday, he didn't do it once during his triple-double performance in the Bulls' 100-89 victory over Boston. He urged Congress to “hold votes on these measures next year.” “I believe that the Second Amendment guarantees a right to an individual right to bear arms,” the President assured Americans. Texas accounts for almost half the nearly 1.3 million industry jobs associated with unconventional oil and gas production in the 16 producing states this year, according to a new study. Some 576,000 Texans were in jobs linked to unconventional oil and gas in 2012, and that is expected to rise to almost 930,000 by the end of the decade, the IHS Global Insight study released Wednesday says. Oil shales, oil sands, gas-to-liquids and coal-to-liquids are examples of unconventional oil and gas resources. The resources are often extracted using techniques other than traditional ones like wells. There are big economic impacts...

ATR has consistently maintained that individual Members of Congress make a pledge to their constituents to oppose and vote against tax increases. The House this week will vote on a tax bill. This legislation—popularly known as “Plan B”–permanently prevents a tax increase on families making less than $1 million per year. Republicans supporting this bill are this week affirming to their constituents in writing that this bill—the sole purpose of which is to prevent tax increases—is consistent with the pledge they made to them. In ATR’s analysis, it is extremely difficult—if not impossible—to fault these Republicans’ assertion. In particular, in...

So why all the fuss? Because the part scientists disagree on is not the "forcing" effects of CO2-induced warming – but the "positive" or "negative" feedbacks which might arise from it. The alarmists, whose views have dominated the debate these last few decades, have long insisted that these feedbacks – mainly created by additional clouds and water vapour – have a "positive", amplifying effect. It goes like this: A little warming (from whatever cause) heats up the sea, which makes the air more humid—and water vapor itself is a greenhouse gas. The resulting model-simulated changes in clouds generally increase warming...

Threatened shopkeepers used 30-round magazines to fire warning shots and avoid taking lives. Bans on high-capacity magazines (variously defined as those holding more than ten, fifteen, or twenty rounds) seem to be part of just about every law to ban assault weapons. The rationale is to prevent the ability to engage in killing sprees like the one on Friday in Connecticut.Would a ban on high-capacity magazines (and not just a ban on new manufacture, as the 1994 federal law provided) make any difference in these massacres of the unarmed? I am hard pressed to see how. Detachable-magazine pistols and rifles...

It took about a whopping 5 secs for the left to politicize this mass murder for their gun control purposes. Most of the talk on the right has been on the defensive, justifying the 2nd ammendment in reaction to those efforts. My opinion is that these events are averted by a stronger civil defense, not fewer guns or more police. Allowing folks to carry would provide that. How about the repubs take the lead and push for concealed carry rights across the 50 states? This should be easy, legally, given the Heller decision. If there's ever a Repub exec in...

At least 26,000 children will miss school today because their teachers called in sick or took a vacation day to protest proposed right-to-work legislation, which is expected to pass today. Warren Consolidated Schools, Taylor School District and Fitzgerald Public Schools are confirmed to be closed. It is also suggested that schools in Detroit and St. Johns may be missing a significant number of teachers. "We've had an excessive number of teachers call in," Warren district spokesperson Robert Freehan said Monday afternoon. "We're concerned about the safety and security of the students, so we're treating it as a snow day." Ben...

A top Nissan official has said the company was “arrogant” in its marketing and sales approach for the all-electric Leaf, which received a $1.4 billion stimulus loan guarantee fromPresident Obama’s Department of Energy. Not that the company is going to return taxpayers their money, since the premise upon which Nissan received the loan were ridiculously high production estimates. Too much in expenses would have to be eaten otherwise. “We were a little bit arrogant as a manufacturer when we went to the 50-state rollout,”said Al Castignetti, Nissan’s vice president for sales, to Automotive News in late November. “We had assumed...

  • Tapper to Obama on newly-found gun control advocacy: 'Where have you been?' (Video)

ABC White House correspondent Jake Tapper asked President Barack Obama Wednesday why the president’s plea for action on gun issues has come so late in his first term and only after last week’s tragic incident at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Obama was holding a noon press conference to announce the creation of a Vice President Joe Biden-led task force to craft new administration gun control policy. “It seems to a lot of observers that you made the political calculation in 2008 in your first term and 2012 not to talk about gun violence,” Tapper said during the noon...

In many ways, The Right had it all to play for in the 80’s. The majority of world leaders were conservative, led by Asia and the Middle East, but with a not too insignificant Europe and the Americas pulling closely alongside. Communism was in its death throes, the unions were not far behind, and the good guys seemed destined to ride off into the sunset. So what went so terribly wrong? How could the proverbial ball not only be dropped, but the outcome would be also an inglorious own goal? Although many factors will come to the fore during the...

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) on Wednesday afternoon urged people to turn in their guns, arguing it would be an appropriate response to last week's mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. "I would personally just say to those who are listening, maybe you want to turn in your guns," Jackson Lee said on the House floor. "Oh no, I'm not going to take your guns. But look at what Dick's Sporting Goods did … they wanted to be part of the solution and part of America."
