  • Doc infects patients with hepatitis B during surgery

    MyHealthNewsDaily ^ | 12/24/12 | Rachael Rettner
A doctor with hepatitis B who performed joint replacement surgeries unknowingly passed the virus on to at least two of his patients, according to a new report. The report, issued by researchers at the University of Virginia Health System, said the surgeon first became aware that he had hepatitis B after he stuck himself with a needle, and underwent routine testing for blood-borne diseases. The surgeon had emigrated from a country that had a high prevalence of hepatitis B, and likely had had chronic hepatitis B for some time without showing symptoms, such as fever and nausea.

Casino/hotel magnate Sheldon Adelson says Republican congressmen should accept a tax increase to solve the fiscal cliff. “I’m a citizen first and a partisan second,” Adelson, who provided more than $100 million to Republican candidates during the last election cycle, writes on Politico. That sum likely makes him the largest single donor ever. …

Explanation: Recognized since antiquity and depicted on the shield of Achilles according to Homer, stars of the Hyades cluster form the head of the constellation Taurus the Bull. Their general V-shape is anchored by Aldebaran, the eye of the Bull and by far the constellation's brightest star. Yellowish in appearance, red giant Aldebaran is not a Hyades cluster member, though. Modern astronomy puts the Hyades cluster 151 light-years away making it the nearest established open star cluster, while Aldebaran lies at less than half that distance, along the same line-of-sight. Along with colorful Hyades stars, this stellar holiday portrait locates...
  • Who’s Crazy? Mental-health experts are wrong.

    National Review Online ^ | December 24, 2012 | D. J. Jaffe
Mental-health experts are wrong. Untreated, the seriously mentally ill are prone to violence. While virtually the entire nation unites around the reasonable proposition that people with serious mental illnesses should not own assault weapons, one group takes umbrage: mental-health experts. In the wake of incidents such as the one at Newtown, the experts immediately issue press releases claiming that people with mental illness are no more violent than others, leading to the conclusion that people with serious mental illness should not be the target of gun-control efforts. How can the chasm be so wide? Who is right? The public that believes...

  • Un-merry Christmas to Christians from Islam

Is Islam tolerant of Christianity? Muslims say yes, but what are the facts? Mullahs around the world warn Muslims not to respond to the words 'Merry Christmas'. If Jesus is the 'prince of peace', it makes Mohammed look bad. In the last years of his life, Mohammed led and commanded violent aggression every six weeks. Mohammed was the 'prince of jihad'. Muslims believe angels announced the birth of Jesus, but Muslims do not believe the Gospel where the angels said, "Peace on earth." Peace with Kafirs is not possible. The Christmas greeting to Christians around the world is still the...

I am going through withdrawal...Ya'll have been helpful and have recommended some of the authors I'll name here...I've unfortunately exhausted Ben Coes, Brad Thor, Brad Taylor, Vince Flynn and Barry Eisler's novels...I would appreciate some more names...I was once told to read David Baldacci's novels...I read 2 pages and realized he's an America-hating liberal. Please, none of these. I only like America-supporting, conservative spy novels...many thanks in advance.

"Are US SCHOOLS more like PRISON? JUVENILE HALLS or Educational Institution?" Here's the link to the video: Are US Schools more like Prison? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5RaDNHwc_M Several thoughts come to mind in the light of the recent school shooting: 1) Government schools will resemble prison even more so than they do now. 2) With more police presence in the schools, minor school infractions will more often be treated like crimes. 3) The children who attend these schools risk learning to be comfortable with a prison-state government control of their lives, government compulsion, and the government trashing every First Amendment Right ( speech,...

Old medical practices, like bloodletting, are typically seen as reminders of a time when the human body was misunderstood. But some of these practices are now being revived – with scientific backing. Scientists at the Charité Hospital in Berlin recently undertook a clinical study to test the benefits that bloodletting can have on obese people suffering from the metabolic syndrome, with symptoms including high blood pressure, high blood-sugar levels and excessive iron in their blood. After withdrawing two vials of blood from patients with the syndrome, scientists compared the samples with patients from a control group, according to head researcher...

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has had plenty of reasons to perfect his pout in the last few weeks. It’s not exactly a rivalry, the thing that exists between the New York Jets and New York Giants. Neither team plays in New York, nor against each other all that often. The fan bases don’t overlap, but don’t exactly clash, either. So all year, Giants fans have been able to stand alongside other neutral NFL observers marveling at the buff, surly telenovela that is the Jets. The Jets, for their part, were at it again on Sunday, with third-stringer-turned-starter Greg McElroy...

The Bakken Shale has put North Dakota in an enviable position—flush with oil, jobs and tax revenue. But some state officials are fretting about an inevitable slowdown. Here, a drill site outside of Watford City. DICKINSON, N.D.—North Dakota officials have a challenge many states would love to face: figuring out how to manage big permanent investments such as roads and bridges for an energy boom that is drawing hordes of newcomers. Already home to some of the fastest-growing towns in the country, according to Census Bureau estimates, the oil-rich western half of North Dakota is likely to experience a population...

Cameroonian presents forged driving licenceThe Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced a Cameroonian, who used a forged driving licence that mentioned the driver’s nationality as Filipino, to three months in jail. KTS, 26, was also ordered to be deported after serving his jail term. According to the records, KTS insisted to a policeman who had stopped him to check his driving licence and car’s registration papers that he holds the Philippines nationality. Spending will increase 55 percent over the next decade, if President Barack Obama's budget plan goes into effect. The finding comes from the Republican-side of the Senate Budget Committee, which notes that Obama's "Proposal Would Spend $880 Billion Over Already Projected Increases." "The President's last fiscal cliff offer once again increased spending rather than reducing it," writes the minority-side of the Senate Budget Committee. "His plan does claim $800 billion in spending reductions over ten years, but these claims are more than offset by new spending increases: increasing spending above BCA limits ($1,200 billion); paying for the doc fix ($400...
