With President Obama’s announcement of a commission to study and recommend ways to reduce gun violence, the two most important Democrats in government — Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — have both indicated a desire to slow the momentum toward gun control in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings. The president’s decision to appoint a blue-ribbon panel — the classic Washington ploy to defuse and delay consideration of an issue — along with Reid’s inaction on the gun question will undoubtedly frustrate many in their party who want immediate action. Obama seemed to anticipate that frustration...

Take a moment to consider this short excerpt from Francis Schaeffer's sermon, "What Difference Has Looking Made?" The sermon is an extended reflection on the experience of the shepherds to whom the angels appeared at the birth of Jesus, as well as what that experience has to teach us: Doctrinal clarity matters a great deal; but Luke does not allow his Gospelto end merely with a proper emphasis on the necessity of the great doctrinaltruths, and our study should not end there either. Before his ascension Jesustold the disciples "that repentance and remission of sins should be preached inhis name...

On a recent December morning, Mack Jones hiked a trail bordering the lake at Sandy Creek Park in Athens before he ventured off the path and up a forested ridge. There he showed a group following him a series of mysterious stone terrace walls and rock piles. "It's hidden in plain sight, and it's been that way for the 30 years the park has been here," Jones said. "No one has messed with it and maybe they won't." Jones believes those numerous rock piles - and especially the stone wall terraces lacing the hillside - might constitute evidence that the...

On the Monday after the Dec. 14 school massacre in Newtown, Conn., MPAA chairman-CEO Christopher Dodd telephoned the major Hollywood studio heads one by one. Violence in movies often comes under scrutiny following mass shootings, so Dodd wanted to touch base with his bosses, even though there was no indication that Adam Lanza's rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School was inspired by movies (he was an intense video gamer, however). We find plenty of reasons for some pretty deep-seated pessimism around here — certain Western democracies’ stubborn march into entirely self-inflicted rates of economic growth much less robust than what they could and should be figuring highly among those reasons — but all in all, I generally subscribe to the school of rational optimism. Sometimes (and I consider Christmas to be a perfect sometime), it’s rejuvenating to take a step back and remember that, while the beguiling promise of big government cyclically rears its ugly head, individuals are everyday responsible for free-market driven innovations and efficiencies that continually make the...

This March will mark three years since Obamacare became law, and it still has not had any serious effect on most Americans' lives. That's the way President Obama and the law's Democratic authors planned it; they conveniently pushed the dislocations and unhappy consequences of national health care well past their re-election campaigns. But Obamacare will be here soon, with an Oct. 1, 2013, start of enrollment in insurance exchanges and a Jan. 1, 2014, deadline for full implementation. The political results could be deeply painful for Democrats. During the campaign for Obamacare, President Obama pledged repeatedly that his health care...

While the shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School has prompted a national gun control debate, President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder will still push to allow immigrants to purchase firearms more easily. Normally, the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) requires legal aliens to live in a state for 90 days before buying a gun. The ATF does this through a rule attached to the Gun Control Act of 1968. In June, Holder’s DOJ proposed to eliminate that 90-day residency requirement rule. “This rule would finalize the interim final rule published on...

Imagine you were a devoted husband, waiting to hear from your wife ... after a visit to the obstetrician, and you saw these on your phone:"every where thinging days nighing""Some is where!" ... You'd probably be tempted to make sure your wife got to the emergency room... A[n] MRI - revealed that part of the woman's brain wasn't getting enough blood, clinching the diagnosis. Fortunately, her symptoms went away quickly, and the rest of the pregnancy went just fine after she went home from the hospital on low-dose blood thinners. The case, say three doctors from Boston's Harvard Medical...

Politics 2012: It hasn´t been two months since Barack Obama won re-election, but already we´re finding out things that were kept from us during the campaign. Expect to hear more in the coming months. lElections are clarifying events, we´re told. But sometimes what they clarify is merely the gap between what we were told during the campaign and the reality on the ground. Often, the two don´t match. That´s certainly true with Obama. How often in recent weeks have we learned that what we heard on the campaign trail from the Obama camp, and which were echoed by

That´s not to say it´s excusable, just that the appalling neglect of 38 patients at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch is the logical result of the NHS´s untenable management structure. Imagine if everything at Tesco´s was free but rationed, and subject to delivery delays of several months. Then throw in the fact that there are no other free alternatives. You would have a nightmare on your hands--huge queues, attracted by the free goods, then further stretched by the long delays. Imagine how the staff would then behave--harrassed by the limitless demand of customers, but also in a tyrannical position of

A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area. Hundreds of residents in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun. The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the...

In a bid to get voters focused on the critical post-presidential debate period of national campaigns, a leading political advisor is pushing to scale back early voting to just the last four days of the election. "People really shouldn't be voting until the debates are finished. We should concentrate on the campaign and the choice until then," said Larry Sabato, who heads the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. (snip) Other suggestions from Sabato: Email voting for soldiers overseas; federal election standards and deadlines; no fault absentee voting where people don't have to provide an excuse; and printouts from electronic...

What subjects do you think will be covered in next season's "South Park?"Note that I am not asking what SHOULD be featured. "South Park" tends not to cover political subjects much so just post what your predictions are of what will be covered, NOT what you want to be covered. I'll lead off with my predictions: 1. Gangnam Style dancing. How can they not cover this especially since it recently reached a BILLION hits on YouTube? 2. Kim Jong-il. Okay, maybe my mind is on Koreans right now (see above) but I think the chubby little nerd with the bad...

Chino police received several calls reporting a fight at the park around 3 p.m. The fight reportedly involved “as many as 200-300 people,” Van Der Linden said in a statement. However, witnesses said the brawl only involved a handful of men who may have been drinking. When officers arrived, the scene...

The Canadian man known as "Surfing Santa" is back again with his holiday tradition. Every year, John Fulton puts on Santa's red suit and windsurfs along the Niagara River between Ontario and New York. Although Surfing Santa has a history of getting in trouble for surfing too close to Buffalo, the U.S. Border Patrol officially sanctioned his trip for this year. Agents also had a boat in the water just in case Fulton had trouble in the water.

VATICAN CITY – Here is the English text of Pope Benedict XVI's Christmas Eve homily, delivered in Italian. Spelling and style are the Vatican's. ___ Dear Brothers and Sisters! Again and again the beauty of this Gospel touches our hearts: a beauty that is the splendour of truth. Again and again it astonishes us that God makes himself a child so that we may love him, so that we may dare to love him, and as a child trustingly lets himself be taken into our arms. It is as if God were saying: I know that my glory frightens you, and that you are trying to assert yourself in the face of my grandeur. So now I am coming to you as a child, so that you can accept me and love me.
