  • Germany accused of 'deporting' its elderly

German pensioners are being sent to care homes in Eastern Europe and Asia in what has been described as an ‘inhumane deportation’. Rising numbers of the elderly and sick are moved overseas for long-term care because of sky-high costs at home. Some private healthcare providers are even building homes overseas, while state insurers are also investigating whether they can care for their clients abroad. Experts describe a time bomb’ of increasing numbers unable to afford the growing costs of retirement homes.

Obama spent his Christmas vacationing in Hawaii. Consider this, from gopusa.com: "Although President Reagan could have spent his White House Christmases with family at his beloved ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif., he instead stayed in Washington, D.C. This way, his sacrifice allowed Secret Service agents and other aides to spend Christmas at home with their families. He was a thoughtful person." Lest some lib think that gopusa.com is making this up, from time.com: (like Clinton) "President Reagan also remained in Washington over Christmas — reportedly so members of the Secret Service could be near their families" Notice Time's use of...

Princeton University Professor Dr. Cornel West appeared on the Tavis Smiley radio show on Thursday where he weighed in with his thoughts on how the media and lawmakers are responding to the tragic massacre of teachers and children in Newtown, Connecticut. West expressed his frustration over how eagerly the media demanded a conversation about gun laws after Newtown, but seems unmoved by endemic gun violence in America’s cities where the victims are primarily minorities. “We can’t just shed tears for those on the vanilla side of town,” West said.” They are precious, but they are no less or more precious...

The Huffington Post published a stern rebuke to celebrities attacking the process of fracking one day before the release of Hollywood's most strident anti-fracking feature. "Promised Land," starring and co-written by Matt Damon, pits a small Pennsylvania town against a very big, very evil natural gas company looking to gobble up fracking-friendly land. The film is getting lukewarm reviews at best, with even Time Magazine's liberal film critic Richard Corliss calling out "Land's" unabashed biases. Left-wingers in the mainstream media — by which I mean me — are supposed to lap up a movie that plays to our farm-loving, tree-hugging...

Back in October we established for the older boys strict screen-time limits. It was then that we discovered the true extent of their addiction. They ranted and raved and cursed and even threw things -- almost as if demons had taken possession of them. These are classic withdrawal symptoms; they craved a fix. When we installed parental controls on the computer, our boys scoffed. It took them about 15 minutes to disable them. We've become so desperate that we may have to get rid of the computers entirely, though that may hamper their school work. My new year's resolution is...

Gun Control: A different set of gun laws applies to network anchors, but even stranger is a newspaper publishing a map showing not only who has a firearm but also telling predators who doesn't. It should have been sufficient for the Gannett-owned Journal News, headquartered in White Plains, N.Y., reporting on increased calls for stricter gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn., to have noted that about 44,000 people in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties in the Lower Hudson Valley — one of every 23 adults — was licensed to own a handgun....

JERUSALEM – Americans intent on ensuring a school massacre like the one in Newtown, Conn., never happens again could learn a lot from Israel, where the long menu of precautions includes armed teachers. The Jewish state, which has long faced threats of terrorist strikes in crowded locations including schools, takes an all-of-the-above approach to safety in the classroom. Fences, metal detectors and armed private guards are part of a strategy overseen by the country’s national police. Then, armed with 3 of his mother's guns, he shot his way into a nearby school, where he killed 6 additional adults and 20 first-grade children. Most of those who died were shot repeatedly at close range. Soon thereafter, the killer shot himself. This ended the carnage but greatly diminished the prospects that anyone will ever know why he chose to commit such horrible acts. Santa Claus came to town - and he was packing heat - as numerous Americans were seen on social networks posing in front of their Christmas trees with the same assault rifle used by the gunmen in three recent bloody killings. Grinning from ear-to-ear, those who received AR-15 assault rifles took to sites like Twitter and Instagram, posting photos of themselves with their brand new toys. The Department for International Development (DFID) paid almost £500million last year to consultants, mostly British, many of whom earn six, even seven-figure incomes, courtesy of the taxpayer. DFID also funds dozens of foreign consultancy firms. It is paying £6million to the University of Cape Town to investigate mental health issues in southern Africa and millions of pounds to US-based organisations, including the Clinton Foundation, the International Food Policy Research Institute and Family Health Inter-national. It is paying a Washington-based group, Search for Common Ground, £3.9million to “support the electoral cycle in Sierra Leone”. Consultancy firms in India and Uganda are...

Besides the Tribune, the other newspapers include the Baltimore Sun, Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Hartford Courant, Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and the Daily Press in Newport News, Va. The Los Angeles Times is expected to retain its AP membership under a separate agreement, Time Out Chicago reports. [Snip] The move, though historic for Tribune, was not unexpected. As early as 2008, not long after Sam Zell became CEO, Tribune Co. signaled intentions to end its ties with AP....

In a joint interview with Barbara Walters that aired on the Wednesday broadcast of ABC News' "Nightline," President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama discuss their patience for the political process. Michelle Obama says the ability to keep her opinions private didn't "happen right away," which led the president to say she has a "bigger difficulty biting her tongue." The first lady disagreed with the president's observation and said she believes she has "done pretty well at that." Walters jumped in and asked if the couple has ever "shushed" each other. "Are you kidding? We've been married for 20 years,...
